I wonder how
he will do in the Grea American Ballpark?
There is nothing wrong with me cheering for players that are former players for my teams. Unless they become a Viking.

Jealous of the Pads.
Is Latos really THAT much better than Sanchez? I always kinda thought Latos was overrated and had one really good season.
Seems like the Padres got QUITE the haul for him. I mean he’s worth two first class prospects, an at least non-total-dud third, and a (sort of) serviceable major league arm….
and Sanchez just gets us Melky? Byrnes looks like a trade warlock compared to Sabean’s court jester on this one, unless Latos is just light years more valuable than I think he is.
There’s a difference of three cost controlled years to start with

That's a big part of it
Still, without question, the Reds just got their ass handed to them.
California Leaguers beware: Chris Gloor will strike you out faster than you can say "Quinnipiac", or he would have if he had pitched more than five innings this year before getting hurt...

Yeah, totally.
Weird thing from SD’s perspective is that they’ve got the same “what do you do with” Yonder problem Cincinnati had, because neither Alonso or Rizzo can play anywhere else on the diamond remotely effectively. And in my mind, Alonso’s bat is weak at 1B in general and certainly will be playing home games in Petco. I don’t know in the end what he’s worth. The rest of the deal is still so fantastic that it doesn’t really matter, I suppose, but if I were the Pads I’d try to flip Alonso for something right now.

+1
Although, I have to admit I really like this trade for the Pads. They have to have a top 5 rated farm system now. I don’t think that Latos will thrive away from Petco, and I feel like his mechanics are going to lead to him being injury-prone.

Agreed
Jocketty got taken. Alonso+Volquez+RP or Grandal+Volquez+RP, not both Alonso and Grandal. I know Grandal was “expendable” with Mesacoro, but that’s what the Rangers thought with Teagarden/Saltalamacchia/Ramirez and look how that turned out. If they were going to move him (and Alonso) they should have gotten more.

Also.. Rollins at 3 years 33 Mill?
Doesn’t seem like a bad deal to me
It just occurred to me
(after reading the FG article where it says Latos only exceeded 110 pitches in four of 72 starts)
Dusty Baker is going to break Mat Latos.

I should also add:
At least we don’t have to face this annoying little douche bag four or five times a year anymore. So that alone makes this a great deal from the Giants perspective, even if Alonso tortures them the next few years like you know he will.

How
How come the Giants can’t pull crap off like that? We need a deal to bring some young prospects to the system that are going to hit. I wouldn’t mind giving up any one of our highly priced pitchers to get a middle rotation pitcher(Volquez) and two hitters back. That’s a no-brainer. I know Cain & Lincecum are great, but to be excited about Melky and Pagan is a shame. Be prepared to hate their large contract extensions and not be able to produce any runs.
You answered your own question.

To get this type of deal done, you’d have to trade someone who is both very good and very cheap, like Bumgarner.

It's really amusing
that both the Padres and Reds SB nation sites think SIML is better than the package the Friars got

as in
the reverse of what we are saying here, that Jocketty got owned

That’s because their fans are thinking short term. They’ll be better next year because they got Latos. Three years from now they’ll know better.

I hope the Reds got a "t" to be named later in the deal

I'm amazed how much the Padres got in this trade
they got so much more than they got in the Adrian Gonzalez trade

Gonalez was far less valuable.
He’s a better player, sure, but 1 year of control versus 4 is a huge difference.

I’d argue the Pads got similar value in the Gonzo trade due to the age/prospects they got back. Kelly should be a solid #3 or #2 for them. He’s far younger then Volquez and far less expensive. Rizzo is younger and likely a tad more shiny then Yonder, and Fuentes is a young CFer who could hit leadoff and play great D, at the very least be a valuable 4th OF’er assuming he hits enough.
Still though Jocketty is an idiot and gave up far too much for a headcase pitcher who’s already shown he has issues staying on the mound. The throw in of Boxberger is interesting to me. He has really good K rates and should be a nice addition to their pen in the near future. I don’t understand how the Reds were ok with throwing him away when to my knowledge they don’t have a lot of guys like that in their minors to join their bullpen. Especially when it’s not like their pen is all that great to begin with.
I’m not convinced that Fuentes and Rizzo are ever going to develop into the offensive threats that they Pads expect. Kelly is the real key to that trade and if he doesn’t come through as at least a #3 starter (and he disappointed a lot of scouts this season) then this trade could end up looking real bad in 5 years time.

WHY IS CABRERA?!?!
The 2011 San Francisco Giants: comprised of extraordinary pitching and a black hole of suck that is their offense
Lantos
The Giants are just dead the way they are built. If anyone thinks they are any better then a 3rd place team your crazy. This lineup might just be the worst I have seen since in the last 20 years. Other then Posey, it’s just a very garbage lineup. Maybe SD has a little worse lineup but shesh. It’s not worth going out and watching this team get 3 hits a 1 run a night. YUCK !!!!!!!!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!! YUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
