Bonds Sentence: No Jail Time
From SBN Bay Area:
Barry Bonds sentence: 2 years probation that includes paying fines by beginning of it, location monitoring for 30 days...Barry Bonds sentence: 250 hours of community service, can't own firearms or dangerous weapons
No jail time. A $4,000 fine. I'm no lawyer -- though I did play one in my eight-grade play! -- but that seems like a good scenario for Bonds. David Fucillo is a lawyer, though, so make sure that you follow his updates on the case here.
If the government had taken the millions they spent on this case and put it toward my student loans instead, I'd have half as much student-loan debt.

Huh and apparently it's based on real events:
Source material and legacy
The play is based on events which took place at Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in July 1986, though some details were changed for dramatic purposes. Members of Rifle Security Company, Windward Side, 2nd Platoon believed that one of their number, Pfc. William Alvarado, was a malingerer and had informed about a Marine firing across the border into Cuba.2 In a retaliatory hazing, or “Code Red”, ten Marines attacked Alvarado, blindfolded him, stuffed a rag in his mouth, beat him and shaved his head.2 Alvarado was seriously injured, but did not die.2 Of the ten Marines, seven accepted other than honorable discharges as part of a plea bargain, but three, including David Cox, refused to accept the plea bargain and went to court.2 Cox was defended by Don Macari; David Iglesias was also a member of the legal team.3 Cox was found not guilty of aggravated battery, but guilty of the misdemeanor charge of simple assault. He was sentenced to time already served in the brig, and returned to active duty.2
Cox was honorably discharged from the Marines in 1989. When he saw the film version of A Few Good Men, he was upset at the liberties taken with the event, most notably that the Marines in the case were dishonorably discharged, and considered suing the filmmakers; however, before he could take any legal action, Cox was mysteriously murdered in 1994.2
David Iglesias later became a United States Attorney, and was one of eight U.S. Attorneys dismissed by the George W. Bush administration.

you can rec my informative post too. I’m sure a few people were curious about the origins of A Few Good Men.
WWRWD?
Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who’s gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the Marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago’s death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall.
I'm a Giants Fan, but I'll always be rooting for Matt Downs

Col. Jessep: What is this? What’s going on? I did my job, I’d do it again!
[stands up defiantly] I’m gonna get on a plane and go on back to my base.
Judge Randolph: You’re not going anywhere, Colonel. MP’s… guard the Colonel! [MPs take post]
Judge Randolph: Captain Ross?
Col. Jessep: What the hell is this?
Capt. Ross: Colonel Jessep, you have the right to remain silent. Any statement you make…
Col. Jessep: I’m being charged with a crime? Is that what this is? I’m being charged with a crime? This is funny. That’s what this is. This is… [turning to Kaffee and lunging at him]
Col. Jessep: … I’m gonna rip the eyes out of your head and piss into your dead skull! You fucked with the wrong Marine!
Capt. Ross: Colonel Jessep! Do you understand these rights as I have just read them to you?
Col. Jessep: [contemptuously] You fuckin’ people… you have no idea how to defend a nation. All you did was weaken a country today, Kaffee. That’s all you did. You put people’s lives in danger. Sweet dreams, son.
Kaffee: Don’t call me son. I’m a lawyer, and an officer in the United States Navy, and you’re under arrest you son of a bitch.

And Goldilocks tried the first Rainy Day Fund and said, “Wow, this Rainy Day Fund has too little money.” So she went to the next chair and tried the Rainy Day Fund that she found in the slightly bigger bowl. Upon sampling the second Rainy Day Fund, Goldilocks exclaimed, “This Rainy Day Fund also has too little money!” So she sidled one more chair over to the final bowl containing Rainy Day Fund, this one bigger than all the rest. Carefully, she tested it, only dipping in her finger for a taste. Bringing the scrumptious Rainy Day Fund to her mouth, Goldilocks was heard to say, “My gosh! Even this Rainy Day Fund has simply too little money!”
Watching the proceedings, Baby Baer, Mama Baer, and Larry Baer couldn’t help but agree. “You’re right,” they said. “All of our Rainy Day Funds have much too little money. This calls for a very serious budget. However, you have been sampling our Rainy Day Fund illegally, and now we have no choice but to sue you.”

From La Wik
[Albert] Pujols and his wife are devout and active Christians;96 one of his writings on his family’s foundation’s website states, “In the Pujols family, God is first. Everything else is a distant second”.97 He writes, “My life’s goal is to bring glory to Jesus. My life is not mostly dedicated to the Lord, it is 100% committed to Jesus Christ and His will. God has given me the ability to succeed in the game of baseball. But baseball is not the end; baseball is the means by which my wife, Dee Dee, and I glorify God. Baseball is simply my platform to elevate Jesus Christ, my Lord and Savior.”98 Pujols attends a Baptist church.99

I’m sure we could expand this to include anything you wish. My point if there is one here, is that this a man who plays football. I’m not even convinced he is very good at that with the limited sample size given.
I really don’t care much about him, and it annoys me because other people that believe it their duty to publicly prosthelytize for their religion be given the electronic pulpit to do so. I have a similar reaction to politicians that continually remind me who their God is, when they have clearly demonstrated their only God has pictures of dead presidents on it.

Yes…and I will give the you fact that it does seem to be the media that often brings it up first. That could be solved, as is often done, by stating that he would really like to talk about the sport. It’s not that hard to drive the interview in the direction you wish.
To both of you I would say that my energetic response to this is partly driven by the sanctimonious injection of ones “faith” into way to many discussions these days. We have many, many problems in this country. I am glad that people have faith in anything, but who your God is, is not that important to me.

He has not improved at all. He was 3 for 16 in the first 3.5 quarters of the Bears game. He completed passes because the Bears decided to give all of his receivers 10 yard buffers. That’s like throwing with no defense.
I didn’t say it was “cheap” I said it was gimmicky., which means you cannot have sustained success with it. Miami won 11 games in 2008 with the Wildcat formation and Chad Henne as the QB. That does not make Henne a good QB.

Yes because Tebow actually hinders the Bronco’s probability of winning.
If Tebow was even Alex Smith level, the Broncos would be winning by 10-14 points instead of squeaking by at the end.

I’ve spoken with people who think that his 1% INT rate is sustainable. Aaron Rodgers has the lowest career INT% among qualified leaders in the history of the game at 1.9%.
When that number regresses, those 15-17 offensive points the Broncos are scoring per game with Tebow is going to become something like 10-12. Enjoy your quarterback, Denver.

Tom Brady, after living a full life, died. When he got to heaven, God was
showing him around. They came to a modest little house with a faded
Patriots flag in the window. "This house is yours for eternity Tom, said
God. “This is very special; not everyone gets a house up here.” Tom felt
special, indeed, and walked up to his house.
On his way up the porch, he noticed another house …just around
the …corner. It was a huge 3-story mansion with Orange and Blue sidewalks
and drive ways, a 50 foot tall flagpole with an enormous Broncos logo flag
waving, a swimming pool in shape of a horse, a Broncos logo in every
window, and a Tim Tebow jersey on the front door.
Tom looked at God and said “God, I’m not trying to be ungrateful, but I
have a question. I was an all-pro QB, I won 3 Super Bowls, and I even went
to the Hall of Fame.”
God said “So what’s your point Tom?”
“Well, why does Tim Tebow get a better house than me?”
God chuckled, and said “Tom, that’s not Tim’s house, it’s mine.”

Here's a quote from a 2009 interview/article
http://www.observer.com/2009/o2/sports/why-roger-clemens-isnt-barry-bonds
Last summer, Bob Costas outlined an argument for skepticism on Real Time with Bill Maher. “To much of the media, Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens make a perfect pair of bookends: one black, one white. One the greatest hitter in the modern game, the other the greatest pitcher.”
But, as Costas cautioned, “Their careers are not the same. Bonds’s numbers took off into the stratosphere after his association with BALCO. All Clemens did was maintain a career that was already on track for the Hall of Fame.”
Shortly after the Maher show, I asked Costas to elaborate his point.
“I’m not saying that Clemens is guilty or not guilty of using some form of PEDs,” he told me. “What I’m saying is that there’s nothing in his career numbers that would indicate any kind of artificial enhancement. I think a lot of people who assume that his later career performance was artificially enhanced haven’t done their homework.”
This seems to be a selective. He has thrown BLB under the bus from day one. We might need some help here.

That’s a weird sentencing to my non-lawyering, layman’s eyes. It’s not like he committed a violent crime, so why should he be banned from owning firearms? Or is the ban just temporary?

One thing about the characterization cost that I object to
Most of the estimated cost is probably man-hours/attorneys’ fees which is misleading since the prosecutors are being paid already. They would have spend those man-hours working up other case(s).
It’s still a waste of resources but it’s not like the government actually paid millions of dollars extra to prosecute Bonds.

But that money WASN'T spent on other cases.
Those man-hours were spent on this. So either the government paid other attorneys to deal with those cases, or those cases were never dealt with. They bought those man-hours and threw them away on this. Spending money on things you don’t need is wasted money. Differentiating ‘wasting resources’ and ‘wasting money’ is semantic and a false dichotomy to boot. Money is a numerical representation of the ability to acquire resources.

Gimpy Beltran going to put up 270/360/475 slash lines at a minimum. He put up 4.7 WAR last year in 142 games last year, 600 PA. In 800 PA over 3 years he could put up 6 WAR easy and be worth 30 mil. Nothing about his game tells me he is in decline
Other than not being able to play from injury. What I read of WAR is 5 mil is approx worth 1 WAR.
Even 800 PA is conservative to the point he is injured about 2/3 of the contract. He could rack up 20 mil in value with one healthy year.

I wonder if Bonds has spent any time in the batting cage recently
I think he would still make a pretty good DH.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility to think he could still OBP >.350 and SLG .450

Some will make the argument that Cuddyer’s versatile. He’s not – playing a number of positions lousily isn’t versatility.

Barry Bonds, because he hit the most home runs. RT @JaSanchez16: @keithlaw who do you believe is the true leader in home runs in mlb??

It’s like putting anchovies on a cheesecake. It doesn’t make anchovies more versatile, it makes the cake bad.

Talking about Cuddyer's versatility.
Think of it like when they were talking about how DeRosa could fill in at pretty much every position.

I agree
I was guessing Cuddyer. WIlllingham was a much smarter signing. Even funnier that Colorado paid that price given the fact of of his suiters went away.
Kubel is going to be a steal if anyone can get him at WIllingham’s price or cheaper.

Willingham makes so much more sense than Cuddyer especially for the Rockies
Purple Row is defending the acquisition because Willingham is a bust or boom type of player. Except, Willingham’s career OBP and SLG is higher than Cuddyer’s while playing in pitchers’ parks.

I think there may be a bit of frustration on Bonds' fans
because he was the one so vehemently targeted as the face of steroid usage. Then most others were given a write off.

Bonds’ prior standing with the media and public probably has alot to do with the way he was targeted. Dude was an asshole, makes for an easy target.
Also, being the best hitter of all time tends to attract attention.

OT: Sam Hurd has a posse
Sam Hurd’s felony charges for intent to distribute cocaine clearly threaten the 26-year-old Chicago Bear’s future. Less obviously, they may seriously impact other players, teams and the league itself. According to CBS Chicago, Hurd sold drugs to a “double-digit” number of NFL players. Law enforcement officials are reportedly in possession of those players’ names. This developing story could emerge as a major scandal for the NFL and trigger reassessment of how the league prevents substances of abuse from infiltrating the game.

The reason the government got so mad when Bonds may have lied is simple!
The government from 2001 to 2008 lied to us about almost everything. Weapons of mass
distruction, the economy, so much so that they would not even testify themselves under
oath when called to testify to the 911 commission. As a matter of fact, Bush would not
testify alone, without Cheney sitting next to him and testifying, “not under oath” on really
important national security matters. They lied about outing a CIA agent. The case was
about, “they can lie to us as much as they want, and we can do nothing about it” maybe
they will allow a lowerling to take the brunt, but we, the average citizen, or even the star
baseball player, cannot even appear to lie or they will be prosecuted. Bonds, Martha
Stewart, it doesn’t matter, they are not members of the plutocracy. Even polilticians
who are not on board with the correct insiders are not safe. But you better not lie, to them,
even as they lie to you, because you are not one of them.
