Daily Winter Baseball results - Part the Vth

Who knew that the winter leagues lasted this long or would take so many posts? Time for another re-up to keep this thread in plain sight. Several Giants that had been playing in leagues that are still active have shut it down and gone home for the rest of the year or gone back to Scottsdale to train at the Giants year-round camp. Those players include Brandon Belt, Francisco Peguero, Justin Christian, Tyler Graham, David Quinowski (and there's some question on whether or not he is still property of the Giants), and Edwin Escobar. In addition, Max Ramirez (who we had been following) just signed a minor league deal for the 2012 season with the Royals That leaves Venezuela as the main league to follow and La Guaria as the team hot spot. The Sharks are clinging to first place in the league thanks mostly to the play of 3 Giant prospects: Hector Sanchez, Gregor Blanco and Ehire Adrianza (to a lesser extent).

UPDATE: The Giants signed middle-infielder Joaquin Arias to a minor league contract on Dec. 17th. He's been a pro since 2001 (signed as a IFA by the Yankees) and started his minor league career way back in 2002, but he signed at such a young age that he's still only 27 years old and won't turn 28 until next September. He's played in 113 games in the majors since the 2006 season, but he seems to have been stuck in the minors because he hasn't been a good enough defensive SS or a good enough hitter to win a permanent spot on a major league roster as a UT infielder.

Winter lines - Thursday 12/15

Hector Sanchez went hitless for the 3rd straight game (granted it was sandwiched around the 3 day ASG break), after not having gone hitless in back-to-back games in all of his previous games, to drop his season average down to “only” .353. In the same game, Gregor Blanco continued his torrid hitting by getting 2 singles and a double in 4 ABs. When the Giants signed Blanco exactly 1 month ago, he was hitting a tick over .300 and Hector was hitting a tick over .400. In the month that he’s been a Giant, Blanco has raised his average almost 60 points and has finally caught and surpassed Hector (.363 vs. .353). In other performances of note, halfway around the world Alex Burg decided to go small ball, getting a single and 2 BBs in 4 PAs. I was unable to confirm the rumor that Shawon Dunston phoned Burg after the game to tell him that he couldn’t walk off the continent.

Hector Sanchez: 0-4, 1 K average drops to .353
Gregor Blanco: 3-4, 2 1B, 1 2B, 1 RBI, CS >>> .361/.500/.560/1.060 in 166 ABs (with 41 BBs in 48 games)
Ehire Adrianza: 0-1, 1 RBI, Sac Fly, Sac Bunt
Jean Machi: 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 3 K, 3 BB, GO/AO=1/1

JC Perez: 0-0, 1 BB, 1 SB

Alex Burg: 1-2, 1 1B, 2 BB, 1 SB
Cam Lamb: 1 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 K

I should have added that Blanco raised his seasonal OBP to the astronomical .500 mark, while raising his ISOp to .199!

He's a CF

He can play LF or RF, but his best position is CF.

Correction

When Blanco was signed here’s what the 2 batting averages were:
Hector: .387
Gregor: .287

It’s not like Hector has slumped, just that Blanco has exploded. In 23 games he’s played in since becoming a Giant, here are Blanco’s VWL stats:
.443/.538/.684/1.222 in 104 PAs with ISOp=.241, BB=21 (=20.2%), K=13 (=12.5%), SB=6 of 8, 7 doubles, 3 triples, 2 HRs

He’s been on base in all but 1 of the 23 games
He’s had a hit in 20 of the 23 games
He’s had multiple hits in 13 of the 23 games

Best minor league defensive OF ever (In terms of quality and depth)?

If Blanco and Frankie Pegs are assigned to Fresno, and Justin Christian and Tyler Graham don’t make the 25-man roster out of ST, the Giants should have the following 5 outfielders in Fresno:
Pegs, Graham, Christian, Blanco, Kieschnick
Not too many fly balls would drop between an outfield configuration of:
LF=Chrisian, CF=Graham, RF=Peguero

I think he meant crowded in the sense of space on the 25 man roster. Melky, Pagan, and Nate have guaranteed spots, then Huff and/or Belt will likely see PT in the OF this season. For Blanco to get a spot on the 25-man, Pagan, Belt, or Huff will have to get benched or hurt AND he’ll have to vault over Christian, Graham, Kieschnick and Peguero (all of whom are already on the 40-man roster).

Winter lines - Friday 12/16

Hector Sanchez snapped out of his 3 game mini-slump by getting 3 hits in 4 ABs. Gregor Blanco also had another strong game from the leadoff spot, reaching base in 3 of his 5 PAs, although he did make 2 unforced errors on the basepaths (picked off and caught stealing). Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, Johnny Monell continued his slugging ways by hitting his 2nd HR. Monell only has 13 hits in limited playing time, but 8 of them have been for extra-bases (61%) to leave him with a .255 ISOp.

Hector Sanchez: 3-4, 2 1B, 1 2B, 2 RBI
Gregor Blanco: 1-3, 1 1B, 2 BB, 1 RBI, 1 CS, 1 PO

JC Perez: 0-2, 1 RBI, 1 SacFly, 1 SacBunt, Assist (threw out runner at 2B)
O. Matos: 0.2 IP, 2 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 1 K, GO/AO=1/0

Johnny Monell: 1-3, 1 HR, 1 K, 1 RBI

Scottsdale camp notes

Yesterday (Friday the 16th) marked the end of a 3 week training & fitness camp down in Scottsdale for about 20 Giant minor leaguers. It was mostly vets from the lower minors, but it also included some rookies and top prospects. As far as I can find out, the list included the following prospects:
Justin Fitzgerald, Cody Hall, Heath Hembree, Chris Heston, Chuckie Jones, Mike Kickham, Mike Mergenthaler, Ricky Oropesa, Eric Surkamp, and Ben Thomas.

The highlight of the camp was a group “run” up Camelback Mountain last Saturday. See the picks below.

Baseball America says the Giants have signed minor league free agent Joaquin Arias, formerly of the Royals organization. Arias is a 27 year old utility infielder. He has 275 career plate appearances in the majors, last in 2010 with the New York Mets. In his major league career he hit .276/.314/.362.

Last year, he hit .232/.272/.353 for Triple-A Omaha. He was once traded for Alex Rodriguez and Jeff Francoeur. Before the 2005 season Baseball America named him the 77th best prospect in baseball. He is currently playing for Aguilas Cibaenas of the Dominican League, where he is hitting .384/.420/.473 in 155 plate appearances.

Good to know

Now I understand why Sabes didn’t go after Rollins, Furcal, or that Japanese SS. With Arias in the fold we’re set at SS next year.

Seriously though, in perusing his minor league career, it looks like he has a problem with making consistent contact and doesn’t walk very often. His K-rate has been consistently 2 to 3 times his BB-rate throughout his career.

Winter lines - Saturday 12/17

In performances of note, Gregor Blanco had a really bad day at the office – going hitless and taking the collar. In the DomRep, freshly-signed middle-infielder Joaquin Arias had another strong game at the plate – getting 2 hits in 4 ABs. Although, he did commit his 8th error of the season while playing SS. Down under, Alex Burg went hitless, but he continued his recent trend of trying to walk off the continent by working 2 BBs in 4 PAs.

Hector Sanchez: 0-2, 1 BB
Gregor Blanco: 0-4, 3 K
Ehire Adrianza: 0-3, 1 K, RBI

Joaquin Arias: 2-4, 1 1B, 1 2B, Error (throw) >>> 8th err of season

In yesterday’s notable performances, Jean Machi had another strong outing out of the pen down in Venezuela. He threw a perfect inning – forcing 2 Ks and getting the 3rd batter to gorund out. Meanwhile, in Puerto Rico, Johnny Monell continued with his disdain for measly singles by hitting a double for his only hit in 3 ABs. Monell only has 14 hits in limited playing time, but 9 of them have been for extra-bases (64%) to leave him with a .260 ISOp.

Still more fruit available to be picked in the DomRep

The Angels signed Angel Yente (DomRep, SS/3B) for $225K recently. Yente was one of the 16 year old kids from the July 2011 eligible class that I wanted the Giants to sign. The signing bonus seems to me to be very reasonable and digestible for the upside the Giants would have been getting if they had gone after Yente.

According to the new CBA that was just agreed upon, teams are still able to sign eligible IFAs (anybody that was at least 16 years old on, or before August 31st of this year) before the end of this calendar year and the signing bonuses will not count against the new bonus cap that will be put in place beginning in 2012. The Giants need to get on the ball and snap up some of the guys that are available now. Here are 4 guys that I want the Giants to pursue:

Yairo Munoz (SS / 6’, 168) (1/23/95): Plus D, plus arm, 6.5 sec in 60, well proportioned frame with more room to grow
Munoz scout page: http://dplbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=102:scouts-corner-yairo-diaz-munoz-ss&catid=38:featured-players&Itemid=54

Ronniel Demorzi (SS / 5’11", 170) (DOB=7/19/95): Plus D, strong arm, played in the Under-Armour All-American game at Wrigley Field in Aug.
Demorzi scout page: http://dplbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=141:scouts-corner-ronniel-demorizzi-ss&catid=38:featured-players&Itemid=54

Hersin Martinez (LF / 6’4", 200) (DOB=?/1995): + raw power, already a physical specimen at the age of 16, won the HR Derby at the ASG last spring.
Scout page: http://dplbaseball.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=99:scouts-corner-hersin-martinez-of&catid=38:featured-players&Itemid=54

Jose Luiz Mendez (RHP / 6’3", ?) (DOB=?/1995): strong arm, he’s tall with long limbs and room to grow into his frame, he’s already an imposing mound presence and should be bull-strong and physically impressive when he finally matures

JCP had a strong day in the DomRep with 2 hits in 4 ABs. JCP had a great first 3 weeks of the season, then tailed off markedly in the middle, but has now started to pick things up at the end of theyear. It will be interesting to see where the Giants end up starting him off in 2012. I think it will depend on where Frankie Pegs ends up. If Frankie starts off in Richmond then JCP will be sent to Fresno, and vice-versa. Whatever happens, I think it’s a safe bet that JCP has lost his starting CF spot to Gary Brown or Tyler Graham.

All 3 Giants that played yesterday reached base in at least one-half of their ABS. Predictions?

If Blanco carries this hot streak through Spring Training, what do the Giants do?

Stash him in AAA anyways? Or give him a 25-spot?

What’s the current roster look like, anyways? Is there room for him? And would he be served by a 5th OF role? or would it be better for him to play everyday and get called up in case of injury to Angel?

25(from memory)
OF: Angel, Melky, Nate, (Huff)
IF: Panda, Crawfish, Glass-bones, Belt, Fonty, Burriss, (Huff)
C: Buster, Stewart, Whiteside
SP: Timmy, Matty, Bummy, Vogie, Payroll Sink.
RP: Wilson, Romo, $5M Loogy, $4.25M Loogy, Mota, Casilla, (Runzler/Edlefsen/Joaquin)

That’s 25. 13 position players. 12 pitchers. I’d send Whitey to AAA and keep Blanco as a 4th/5th OF option.

by Nivra on Dec 27, 2011 11:30 AM PST up reply actions

I always like early roster discussions. This is still early for sure.

Sabes or Shulman or somebody roughed it out about like this. No Whiteside in the bigs. Bunches of reserve first basemen who can play some outfield. The 5 position reserves: Stewart, Fontenot, Burriss, Belt/Huff, and….
Pill, hits righty with some pop?

or Pill becomes Blanco, Brad Eldred, Graham (already on the 40), Conor G
Or Belt banished to guarantee him atbats.

Marvin Barrios, come on I'll show you your bedroom. Don't stay on the phone too long to Panama, please.
