One more bit of Sandoval news: He’s eligible for arbitration and Morgan said he has had very broad discussions with Giants VP Bobby Evans about a contract. Sandoval’s camp is open to a multiyear contract, but it looks as if the two sides will prepare their arbitration numbers with the goal of completing a deal for 2012. If Sandoval shows in in camp in terrific shape, perhaps the Giants will think about reopening talks with the Panda in the spring, when the club often negotiates extensions for players.
I believe this is fantastic news. What do you all think? How many years would you like to keep the Panda around for and for how much?
I'd like 3-5 years with a couple of options to keep with the team through the bulk of his prime with his price as low as possible. If Panda performs like he has and reaches free agency in three years with a couple more 5+ win seasons under his belt, he will get paid big in free agency. 3B is a total wasteland with the aging, inconsistent, and defensively hideous Aramis Ramirez the best option in FA at 3B.
Meanwhile, Pablo will be only 28 for his 2015 FA season and would garner a large, expensive multi-year deal if he stays in shape and continues to improve through his prime. He is also establishing himself as one of the core personalities of the team, and is a fan staple; losing him because our money is all tied into Cain and Lincecum would be tragic.
How about 5 years at $53m with 2 team-options? That would keep him through his age-31 season, ensuring the Giants get to enjoy the Panda during his prime.
2017 Team option: $15m
2018 Team option: $15m
