Giants in talks with Alex Gonzalez
...who actually had a lower OBP last year than Brandon Crawford. But don't worry guys, he was a whole .003 higher than Orlando Cabrera, and I'm sure he brings tons of veteran intangibles.

Maybe the craziest part: The player most comparable to Alex Gonzalez in the history of baseball?
Alex Gonzalez!
Also on the comparable list: Juan Uribe, Rich Aurilia, Shawon Dunston, Royce Clayton. I just discovered how the Giants scout their future shortstops.

He’s actually a good defensive shortstop with power, and he’s young enough at 34 to not be washed up like Miguel Tejada. At a cheap price that doesn’t interfere with the pursuit of Beltran I don’t have a problem with him. The only problem I DO have is that if he is washed up, the manager will keep sending him out there everyday until September anyway. Because of Bochy I would probably pass.
Buster Posey: still better than Eli and Stewart, even with a broken ankle.
He doesn't have as much space between peak and washed up as Tejada either.
BBRef had Tejada as a 1 WAR player in 91 games last season vs. Gonzalez at 1.3 in 149 games. Fangraphs is 0.0 vs 1.1.
So there’s a good chance that he’s not an upgrade at all (which, considering the putrescent play the Giants got from short last season, would be something of an accomplishment), and probably not better than a crappy internal options even if he does best the 2011 starter.

NOT INTERESTED.
Quietly hoping Brandon Belt develops into John Olerud, circa 1993.

Is He Ready
to caddy a pretty boy brat, play 2nd base and hit the occasional Dingerz? All for 3MM or under, 1 year?
He’s always struck me as a pretty good defender and he has 15HR surprising pop. The other stats are very bad. And he has a weird sneer. I’m still scarred from 2003.
NO WANT
Dude looks like a Gila Monster. Don’t trust him.
He would ruin any hope of the Giants fielding an “All-handsome” team.

As has been said
if he comes cheap enough so as to not prevent a Beltran re-signing I don’t have much problem with this. There aren’t any good cheap SS options out there so a strong defensive player who could platoon with Crawford/Fontenot wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. It would be better than being stuck with Yuni.
Thing A
Didn’t Sabean essentially tell the press the other day that Beltran is pretty much a long shot? Or, have his comments been interpreted differently?

When did he say that?
I can’t really think of anywhere else he might go.
I am very skeptical that Gonzalez is better than Fontenot at this point.
My adopted Giant, the young Reinier Roibal
As for Sabean telling the press that Beltran is a “long shot,” that’s the same guy who raved about Crawford, then picked up the phone to call Alex Gonzalez. Them’s called “negotiating tactics.”
Buster Posey: still better than Eli and Stewart, even with a broken ankle.
I’m having a hard time thinking of that particular tactic working out for the Giants. When Sabean says that he’s probably not going to sign a guy, he probably isn’t.

unless some team is working extremely quietly, I see a limited market for Beltran so far, although things will probably come out next week with the winter meetings. I’d like to think the people owning and running this franchise aren’t idiots and realize how much this team needs Carlos Beltran. I have no problem with my team trying to do so with a team friendly contract.

I wouldn’t be shocked to see Florida go after him if they lose out on the Reyes/Pujols/Fielder sweepstakes.

I think it's down between us and Detroit
Kinda doubt Boston is going to sign more old guys, unless the unthinkable happens and they don’t resign Ortiz.
But Detroit has a full DH for the next 3 years in Victor Martinez.
The Giants are the only contender who have ever reason to need and want Beltran.
He is a good fielder. He hits for power. He does not hit for high average. He should be a nice stopgap and
two thirds time player for Crawford. Gonzo, often has injuries which cost him quite a few games each season. He is, in the old sense of evaluation, a real “gamer”.
Jose Reyes only has two suitors (and I think the Mets are just CYA PR than real intent) and a known top bid of around $90 mil. Why are we talking to alex Gonzalez?
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
Jon Heyman is reporting that the Marlins know that 90 million isn’t enough and they’re getting ready to up the bid. The Giants’ can’t get this done with their payroll restrictions. They’re no competition for the Marlins, with their good weather, new stadium and closeness to his home in Puerto Rico.
Buster Posey: still better than Eli and Stewart, even with a broken ankle.
with their good weather
They haven’t moved Miami have they? It’s still in Florida, right? Though I can see how the Giants ancient stadium filled with screaming crowds would be a drawback compared with the beautiful new digs enticing several thousands of southern Floridians to come watch.

Miami doesn't have good weather?
Tell that to thousands of old Jews! I agree that ATT Park is still sensational, but while that may be a consideration to players in other cities, it’s not going to be a selling point to players looking to sign with the Marlins.

I think Florida in general has brutally awful weather. Miami’s ok if you happen to be standing on the beach, but get two blocks away and yeah, SOS. Generally speaking, I think DC’s weather is vastly preferable in all seasons, and I’ve never said a nice word about DC weather in my life. And I would add, if it isn’t terrible then why do people down there keep insisting that you have to have a roofed stadium down there to attract any fans (and if you do, then you need to make sure there’s no traffic on the way to the stadium, because that’s a fan killer, too).
But in the end, I think all that stuff is about 98% nonsense. Selling point = $$$ when you get out on the market. All the wining and dining in the world is just the wrapping paper you throw out with the trash on Christmas night.

ok. Can we compromise by signing Miami has warm weather? It’s certainly preferable to Latin players, because it’s similar to the weather they were raised in. Please don’t tell me you haven’t heard ballplayers complaining about the cool weather in SF in the summer! Do I have to quote Mark Twain?

I don’t think Reyes has thought about the West coast for 1 second. Throw Nine figures at him, that might change.
Players complain about lots of things … until they’re paid not to. Remember when Sabathia didn’t want to go to New York because he hated the East Coast lifestyle? It’s all just noise. By and large players go where their agents negotiate them the best deals.
As for Mark Twain: you know he never said that, don’t you? Leastwise, he never wrote it down anywhere, and it would have been most un-Twainlike to keep a joke like that to himself.
MY DAD WAS WRONG!
MY BOY NEEDS TO THROW HARDER!
I agree with you about Sabathia having a change of heart once he came to NY. I think the same is true about Beltran. The Giants would have little chance of re-signing him if he hadn’t spent a couple of months here in 2011. That being said, how do we get Reyes to try it out?
Proud owner of over 20,000 comments. (most of them in the wrong place) Oh yeah, and Buster Posey
Reyes is Dominican. He’s not from Puerto Rico. Your point still stands.
But the Giants could easily afford him with a backloaded contract if they wanted. They could easily do $10m this year, $12m next year, then up it from there. The question is if they are willing to sign him, and if signing him would preclude re-signing Lincecum and Cain (possible, but if Payroll continues to rise around a winning team, they could all fit, even at $20m/per in 2014).

For Some Reason
I thought that he did well against the Giants.
I was very wrong. 200/242/573, and miserable in the 2 postseason series as well.
I remember that one August series in Atlanta in 2010 where he did some damage against the Giants. Had to look it up to see the exact details, but he went 4 for 13 with two home runs, one of them off of Lincecum. I remember the Giants were awful in that series and only some miscues by Atlanta in the ninth salvaged one game of the series. I’m still stunned we went down there in the playoffs and won both games.
