I’m mildly optimistic about Melky, but I can’t see this helping the team much, if at all. They now need for either Zito or Surkamp to pitch a lot better and for none of the other starters to get hurt.
I’m giving it a C. It kind of depends on what else they do. If this is to save some money for Beltran or Reyes, ok. If this is the big offensive move this offseason, no.

This is where I am too. I also want Torres back as a defensive replacement at least. I would love a Belt, Melky, Beltran outfield until it’s late in the game with a lead.
Buster Posey: still better than Eli and Stewart, even with a broken ankle.

he's still
a good pinch-running option, and no worse a basestealer than Ford or Burriss.
I don’t think the RDF has $2M for that, though. I forgot about Ford but he’s cheap and they seem to love him.

Yeah. I’m pretty middlin’ on it. I’ll wait to see what other move they want to make. I see a decent possibility that they try to get [good player] and fail, leading to another season’s worth of “Sabean sucks because he didn’t get [good player]” followed by “But does he really? It isn’t his fault [good player] prefers [ballpark food from other team].” But he tried! But he didn’t get results!

I struggled between a B and C
I’ll vote B, giving them the benefit of the doubt that they know more about Sanchez and Torres than we do.
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
The trade itself is a B
But my overall grade to the Giants in the offseason is C, incomplete. Show me at least 1 more 3+ WAR player.
On the other hand
they assured us that they knew more about Miguel Tejada’s defense than we did last year.
Jonathan Sanchez isn’t likely to be traded unless the Giants fall out of contention. Jonathan Sanchez isn’t likely to be traded unless the Giants fall out of contention. Jonathan Sanchez isn’t likely to be traded unless the Giants fall out of contention.

You know what's weird
For whatever reason, I was sure that the Giants were largely a strikeout/fly ball pitching staff. But it turns out that as a team, they’re really a strikeout/ground ball pitching staff. They had the fourth highest GB% and the third lowest FB%.
So maybe outfield defense doesn’t matter.

Especially if you want to get Beltran. You are pushing Belt and\or Nate out of the lineup.

Reyes and Jroll are better since they are major upgrades to a need.

I voted for D
Although I’m somewhere between C and D right now. My biggest issues are that I don’t trust Melky’s resurgence at the plate this season to carry over to 2012, I don’t think that he will play good D in CF for the Giants, and I would rather that Sabes had freed up even more money to go after Jimmy Rollins or Beltran by trading Sanchez for a minor league prospect or 2.
Melky seems to me to be in the same offensive category as Cody and Nate, and will likely end up keeping Belt from getting consistent PT – not to mention that I hate the idea of Bochy putting him in the leadoff spot day after day.

Yeah, I was just going to post about what MLBTR.com had on him:
Seibu shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima will again ask to be posted this offseason. Nakajima was denied that request last winter, though the Orioles and Mariners were reportedly among the interested teams. The 29-year-old hit .297/.354/.433 with 16 home runs in 633 plate appearances this year. Newman considered Aoki Japan’s second-best hitter in his August 2010 article.
Just the fact that he’s on the market should help the Giants as it would seem to take some of the leverage away from Rollins and also the lower-tier SS available.
What can you tell us about his defense at SS?

Melky IS long term prospects.
He’s a better chance to be a Type A than Sanchez next season, and those draft picks give you prospects.
It hasn't worked out because the Giants' Type A/Bs have not been of the useful kind.
They have been generally much older than Melky and also not underpaid to the extent that an offer of arbitration can be assumed to be summarily declined.
Apples and oranges.
Who’s the last Giants Type A position player just entering his prime years as well as underpaid? He may even be before my time, because I can’t think of one!
Regardless of how you view Melky
You get him for one season, and it’s one season where we have a bunch of other cheap people available to play the positions he plays. Even if you believe, as I do, that Melky is actually a pretty good lil’ player, I don’t think it’s much of a stretch to say it would have been better to try to extract some longer-term value from Sanchez.

But
if it meant getting someone to plug up a perceived hole at CF and in the lineup and saves some money in the interim to allow Sabean to go sign some other players.
It is clear that Torres was not going to factor into the Giants plans especially with his $2.5 million salary. So, Sabean decided to pick up a CF (maybe not a great defensive one)

No way on earth I'd give up a top prospect for Sanchez
Some history of arm problems. Wildly inconsistent. Possibly somewhat of a head case to boot. I liked Sanchez. Still do. But there is simply no way he was going to bring in a stud prospect. I just don’t think they could have got more for him.
Put it this way – if Cabrera approaqches what he did last season, its a huge plus move.

By fWAR, never.
He’s been over that once, and under that every other year.
Adopted father of Chris Lincecum, without whom (quite literally) Timmy would not exist.
No, my percieved value of Melky is that he's on a one year contract.
One year of a 2-3 WAR player (which is an average to slightly above average player) is not worth a stud prospect at all. That’s crazy.
Do you think teams are giving up their top prospects for one year of players like Jack Hanahan or Omar Infante? These are 2-3 win players. They are worth a lot less than “stud” prospects. They are worth less than even slightly-less-than-stud prospects.

What?
The quote was that Huff came in ST out of shape and got worse as the season got along. Huff had the large majority of the playing time at 1B for most of the season up to September. If that’s true, then Bochy basically admitted that he stuck with Huff for too long and that decision hurt the team.

Love it and here's why
1. I didn’t think they could get a productive everyday player for Sanchez. Yes they threw in a mid level prospect. But the fact that the KC wanted Runzler and the Giants traded Verdugo instead tells me they don’t think real highly of him.
2. No negative impact economically.
3. No long term contract – Brown awaits.
4. Relatively young player who will be in a contract year during his prime. If he repeats 2010 he can have a big payday coming. Thus motivated.
5. Switch hitter with some speed and some pop.
This trade has a relatively high upside. Sure there is a chance Sanchez figures it all out. But that was a risk worth taking. So from a risk-benefit analysis, in my book this is an excellent deal.

I went with "F"
More for the process than the result.
I think it’s foolish that management felt a need to trade Jonathan Sanchez. He’s significantly better than the other options and 5-6 million is below market value for a guy who is going to give you something like 24% K and 11.5%BB with an ERA soemwhere between 3.95 and 4.50 which is likely what he would have produced this year. Now the Giants might very well end up spending at least that to replace him.
I am sick of the “not a good soldier” approach to management. It damages the team by casting off otherwise valuable pieces and is even more problematic because following the theory requires holding on to and propping up unproductive players simply because they don’t rock the boat.
Whatever Melky adds on offense will probably be lost on defense. So maybe he hits a bit better than Nate Schierholtz but his fielding will be a huge decline from Andres Torres. I didn’t feel that there was a need for a CF. I would be okay with Melky in LF, even though he’s still below average there, but to put him in CF, which we know is going to happen is completely foolish. I am sure it wont take long for the team to see that he shouldnt be there but Bochy wil not move him. We know that too. He’s exaclty the kind fo player Sabean would go after and he’s exactly the wrong player to put in the hands of Bruce Bochy.
So I hate it. Maybe a bit irrationally, but I hate it.

1) The question whether Sanchez would have given you much next year. I get a sense that the Giants believed he wouldn’t considering his mental “softness”, his “slow recovery” of the DL, and constant complaining. There is also something to be said about him being “uncoachable”
2) I agree with this but if you are battling for the 5th SP position, being a “bad soldier” is not great.
3) He had a bad defensive year last year but he has also show that can play CF pretty well in NYY. He’s only 27 so it is not like he is losing a step speed wise.

I do think there is a chance
that he has a good enough year to improve the team as a whole. I just wouldn’t play my Jonathan Sanchez chip on that bet, not just because Jonathan Sanchez but also because, apparently this move has created a whole that the Giants are now considering using RDF money to fill. So that lessens the ability to get a player that will truly have a high probability of improving the team like Carlos Beltran for example.

So you're the guy who stands in the corner of the room and says "You're all a bunch of morons"?
Good luck getting people to give your way of thinking?
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
This little Zito of mine,
I’m gonna let him shine,
Let him shine, let him shine,
Let him shine.
Hide him under a bushel, NO!

I'm actually ok with this
Think back to last season. Most of us were ok with Zito being the 5th starter. He still has the potential to pitch ok in about half his starts with a few gems thrown in, just like he did in 2010. Last year was injury riddled for a guy that has never been on the DR. I think there is a decent chance that this works out. And hey, if it doesn’t, it’s just a 5th starter problem. Every team always has 5th starter problems and they aren’t the end of the world. There are probably 15 more pressing problems for the giants than Zito being 5th pitcher.
Shift-A.
This isn’t the first time I noticed the poll respondents are a lot more supportive of a trade (or other FO move) then the commenters. Not sure if that means anything, but it does seem to happen.

I think
The people that don’t like a move are usually a lot more passionate than those that like it or are ok with it. As a result, they tend to post a lot more, giving the impression that most people are against it.

yeah
that makes me less sanguine about the possibilities of this deal. getting a legit B+/A- prospect with a shot to be ready in 2013 doesn’t seem out of the question, and would have been a much better acquisition than one year of Melky.

They are not signing Beltran
They will end up offering him something way less than his market value and tell everyone they tried.

I wouldn't be surprised
If the Giants are going to try to match offer late (if the price is good), but not push up the bidding.

A question for those who criticize the trade as "buying high/selling low"
(Including you, jcb)
Do we really know that? If Melky repeats his 2011 or is even better and Sanchez repeats his 2011 or is worse, wouldn’t it be more “buying a player on the rise/selling a player on the decline”
It’s like the stock market; you really don’t know if you bought/sold high/low until some time has passed and you look back at the deal.
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.

Torture
I know that we as Giant’s fans should embrace the word ‘Torture,’ but watching Sanchez pitch last year (and indeed many times in years past) was absolutely torturous. The slow walks around the mound, the WALKS in general, the blank million-mile stare into the catcher. Watching him pitch was agonizing at times. I’d rather have a guy give up hits than walks, any day. I remember screaming at the TV, “THROW STRIKES, GODDAMNIT!” None of that will be missed. Could we have gotten more? Perhaps. But I for one am glad to see him go. The fact that we got at least an average offensive player is a bonus. I’m sure that we’ll be able to find someone who can pitch 5 1/3 innings of league-average baseball to replace him.

I voted A.
I’d give it a B+.
Sanchez looks to be slightly more productive than Cabrera, with Sanchez paid a bit more. Cabrera is also significantly younger: entering his prime years rather than leaving them.
Cabrera is a much better chance to be a Type A free agent next season, and good enough that the Giants should be able to have an arbitration offer declined and, subsequently, have another team sign him. I like draft picks.
The Giants have traded from a position of depth (Zito is infuriating, but he is still a passable 5th starter, and Surkamp may be as well) to acquire at a position of scarcity (Schierholtz simply does not look like a passable corner outfielder for a World Series contender, Torres is a guessing game, and Belt probably should be playing 1B on this team).
In full context, this trade appears worse, but really, it’s a good trade.
by dregarx on Nov 8, 2011 10:40 AM PST reply actions 1 recs
Context.
Though depth is fine and all, quality at positions is better. Cabrera looks to either supplant Torres as a functionally identical player (though they provide value in different ways), or to supplant Schierholtz as a better player, but not by a whole lot.
That’s an improvement, sure, but the offense needs a bigger boost to become respectable. Beltran needs to be signed; otherwise, there isn’t even that great of a guarantee that the offense is improved. Beltran is a great fit for the team, as a considerable offensive improvement at a reasonable cost given his age.
Would I have preferred Yankees prospects for Sanchez? Maybe, but remember that Melky’s free agent compensation will likely lead to prospects as well, and Giants-drafted prospects who will fit our needs better and (in the Barr era) are a good bet to be well-drafted: the Giant’s FO has done some good drafting in the past. It’s a push.
