Marichal-57111

An autographed pic of Juan Marichal playing for Escogido, one of the teams in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, in 1957. He was 20 years old here. The sig is for dictator Rafael Trujillo. El Jefe loved baseball and recruited Satchel Paige for an all-star team in Santo Domingo (then called Ciudad Trujillo), even though he hated black people.

I found this pic while researching my final project for my history class. Great stuff.

I heard Marichal say in an interview that Trujillo threw the whole team in jail after they lost a doubleheader!

Buster Posey: still better than Eli and Stewart, even with a broken ankle.

I read that in the book about him and Spahn. He also said jail wasn’t so bad. He was there for five days and fined $2, although the text is unclear if it’s US dollars or pesos. He made 57 pesos a month in the Air Force. Ramfis, Trujillo’s son, ran the baseball leagues and he was the one who put them in jail.

By the way, the Escogido team has strong ties to the Giants. The Alous are affiliated with them, and Moises is their present GM. It’s also where they sent Brandon Belt to play this winter.

Escogido is also mentioned in the Marichal/Spahn book. The NY Giants were the parent company of Escogido. That’s cool about Moises. I saw Belt play here in October, too. :)

Marvin Barrios, come on I'll show you your bedroom. Don't stay on the phone too long to Panama, please.
