AM Overflow Thread: John Shea says Giants need to sign Beltran
Makes pretty good sense. Having two switch hitters with pop in the heart of the lineup is super cool.

Interesting that he mentioned AL teams bidding things up because he could DH
Isn’t the word that Beltran doesn’t want to DH?
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
I think the real word is that Beltran wants money.
I doubt he’d be unwilling to DH if he was paid more.

I’m thinking “a chance to win a WS” has to figure into his decision process
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
Sure
But he’s already said he doesn’t think the Giants are good enough with just him – he thinks they need Reyes (or a different leadoff type guy).
I agree that WS considerations would be in play too – probably even more than whether he’d DH or not.

Good enough for what?
Good enough to have the best offense in the league? Probably not.
But good enough to win the division and give adequate support to another pitching dependent run through the playoffs? I think so.

I would like to see Reyes become a GIant as well. I just don’t think their fate is sealed if he doesn’t.

I disagree
The Giants failed to win the division in 09 and 11, when the put up a team wRC+ of 83 in each year. In 2010, when they did win the division, they managed a team wRC+ of 95, or just 5% below league average.
Posey’s a good player, sure. But Sanchez can’t really be counted on to be as good as he’s been in the past, as injuries and another year of aging take their toll. Beltran is good, yes, but we had him for half a season last year hitting phenomenally, so the improvement we’d see from a full season of him isn’t that massive.
Basically, relative to league average, the Giants need to boost their offense by a full 10 points of wRC+. I don’t see Just Posey and Beltran being able to do that. And that’s assuming that no pitchers get hurt.

Incorrect
The league average wRC+ for the NL in 2010 was 94 (and in any event were 6th in the NL by team for that value).
Excuse me
The fact remains that the Giants need to get their wRC+ up by doubt digits, it seems, in order to make the playoffs. I don’t see them doing that with just Beltran and returning players.

Well
Beltran is good, yes, but we had him for half a season last year hitting phenomenally….
44 games (wrist injury took away ~20?). A moot point of course, because they aren’t re-signing Beltran. Of course, all of this is moot because they aren’t signing Reyes, either.
I would guess Beltran is a very real possibility
Provided they bidding doesn’t get crazy (over $13M/year and over 4 years), I think there’s about a 50/50 shot: He did well here and the same arguments that the team saw in giving up Wheeler still apply.
I think this will be like F Sanchez, Schmidt and now Lopez, where Sabean wants to keep the guy he loved enough to trade for.
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
yes for future reference
NL wRC+ (like OPS+) includes pitcher’s batting so average is <100.

Factor in either a better Huff or Huff on a shorter leash with a more experienced Belt behind him. Factor in either a better Torres or someone else in CF. Almost anything they put at SS will be better than what was there in 2011. The big moves are important, but even minor improvements spread across each position will make a huge difference, and considering how many things went wrong in 2011, that’s not an unreasonable expectation.
Keep in mind that the team you think needs to improve so much from their 83 wRC+ is in large part the same one that managed that 95 wRC+.
by Monkeyking42 on Nov 3, 2011 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions
Also, another way to look at it is that they only missed the playoffs by 4 games this year. Simply having Posey the whole year would have been, what, an extra 2 wins at a minimum?
by Monkeyking42 on Nov 3, 2011 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions
I think to get back to the mid 90s they need
1) full season of posey
2) full season of Beltran-equivalent OF
3) much less of the bad huff (i.e., either a better Huff, or Belt at 1B) – they won’t get Fielder/Pujols
4) league average SS (like 94 wRC+)
Alternatvely, they could get Reyes at SS and a 110 wRC+ OF. Note that if they do play 150 games of either Coco Crisp or Yuniesky Betancourt they will be extremely hardpressed to get up to league average.
I will do more analysis when the Zips come out for the Giants in a week or two.

If the broader point is that the Giants need a better offense, that much is certainly true
As to whether Carlos Beltran in particular is the player who best fits their needs, I would disagree – I, of course, think it’s Reyes. Even relative to position, our weakest offensive output last year came from shortstop, not the outfield corners.
If we acquire no one, our SS, LF, and RF would likely be Crawford, Belt, and Schierholtz.
The difference between Beltran and Schierholtz (who would most likely be benched for Beltran) is large, to be sure.
But the difference between Reyes and Crawford is a gaping chasm of fire and death.
The Giants need to upgrade the offense, yes. But if there was one player (non-Pujols division) who could have the most impact on the improvement of that offense, it’d be Reyes, not Beltran. Because who he’d be replacing matters.

I don't think it would
They drew 3.5 million last season. You’d need to draw another 500,000 fans to cover Reyes at $15M. There weren’t that many empty seats to sell.
The only way is pays off is in potential post-season revenue and maybe some add’l merchandise revenue
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
These debates always seem silly to me
Individual player transactions likely don’t have almost any effect on attendence.
What’s clear to me is that, at least in San Francisco, winning brings fans. Giants would win more games with Reyes. I think if they stink next year, that sellout streak ends before the all star break.

I think Beltran should be their number one target. Anyone better would be cost prohibitive. As for Reyes, although he better fits a position of need, the Giants need a middle of the order bat more than they need a leadoff hitter.

Reyes is an unknown
Beltran is cheaper long term, a known commodity, and appeared to me rubbed off pretty good on Panda. That is the type of guy, leader, I want on my team.
But they need a SS more than they need an OF.
Proud parent of SD-born Shane Loux.

What they need is a hitter.
It doesn’t have to come from SS position. I’d rather it not, if great defense isn’t also a part of it.
Just play a Brandon or two, come on!
Beltran is a rare free agent available for the Giants
The FO is clear in its MO : Don’t sign long term deals to free agents. Rely on the farm system to produce players you can control for 6 years.
So forget Reyes. Forget Fielder. Forget any player that is going to require a 6 year commitment to sign. Not happening. And, honestly, for the better imo.
Beltran is an impact bat that requires a 3 year commitment max hopefully. That fits the Giants perfectly. They absolutely need to sign him because there simply isn’t many impact bat that is willing to sign short term deals.

Can I get in this line?
“It’s written in the staars…”
Seriously, with the new FO (seeming) policy of no more 5-7 year debacle contacts…and having traded a prized prospect to get him initially, it would seem that Beltran to the Giants is fated.
HOWEVER – how many other FOs might be thinking similarly, since those big shiny deals to Werth and Crawford don’t look so hot right now. (Yes, I’m aware they are both better players than they played last year…but they are currently starting in “Don’t Go Over 6 year deal” commercials in the minds of FOs everywhere.)
Beltran is an impact bat that requires a 3 year commitment max hopefully. That fits the Giants perfectly. They absolutely need to sign him because there simply isn’t many impact bat that is willing to sign short term deals.
This is perfect. And I’d be fine with a 3 year overpay as opposed to a 6 or 7 year gamble.

Crisp vs. Torres
I agree that they’re very similar players, but I think Torres is a bigger question mark because his career has been so all over the place and because of the “issues” he had last season.
Coco is two years younger and a pretty consistent 2-win player.
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.

And over the past thee years, Torres has been the vastly superior player.

Torres is the better defender and baserunner, and he might be just as good on offense. I’ll take Torres.
Ask me about my blog.
Might be, yes, but it’s worth pointing out that over their respective careers and in 2011, Crisp has been the far better hitter.
Torres should be brought back, but they’ll at least need a plan B. Thing is, most of the plan Bs available (Crisp, DeJesus, Ross, Pagan, Sizemore) will likely turn into Bochy’s plan A, and Torres will become a 4th outfielder. As long as he gets a chance to play, I’m fine with this.
by Monkeyking42 on Nov 3, 2011 11:12 AM PDT up reply actions
I think it comes down to how much of a better hitter you think Crisp is over Torres. Is it 10%? 15%? And if you do think he’s better, how much are you willing to spend. It seems like a bad move to me.
Crisp career wRC+ = 98
Torres career wRC+ = 98
I don’t think he’s been “far better”. In essence, if the Giants pay for Crisp, they are paying to downgrade the defense and baserunning without really addressing offense. That’s a bad move.
Ask me about my blog.
What makes you say Torres is the better baserunner? Over the last three years, Crisp is 94-and-14 as a base stealer.
Yeah. I remember Schulman pointing out on Twitter at the end of the season that Torres looked slower.
by Grant_ME_MERCY on Nov 3, 2011 11:20 AM PDT up reply actions
Yeah and Torres is 45-13 during that same period
So Crisp is twice as good at stealing bases. How does Torres make up for that? Is he twice as good at taking extra bases?
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.

OK, so what makes you think Torres is the better baserunner based on the one year experimental stats?
It's 3 years and where are you getting experimental?
And I guess instead of that we’ll instead go off of, “Crisp is better cause I think so”? I’ll take the actual measurements over someone just claiming something.

"And besides, if I wanted to participate in a mindless patriotic ritual where my voice isn’t really heard, I would vote." - Chris Marcil
It was added into fWAR this year
It requires quite a bit of regression, particularly after only 3 years.
And, you do know how much stolen bases factor into UBR, right?
I was just arguing that citing steals as a measure for baserunning was faulty
At the very least they’re about even, with evidence supporting Torres actually being better.
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, future CF for the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
"And besides, if I wanted to participate in a mindless patriotic ritual where my voice isn’t really heard, I would vote." - Chris Marcil
Evidence?
A supposed 1.8 run difference over 3 years where both were in varying bouts of healthiness, playtime and teams (because UBR is highly team dependent)?
And by all accounts
Crisp is the better basestealer. Recently, in any event.
That’s … a table. I assume you want me to sort by Base Running Runs? Do I need to list the reasons why that’s inadequate?
Yes
I’d love to hear why it’s inadequate to you just listing SB/CS.
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, future CF for the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
"And besides, if I wanted to participate in a mindless patriotic ritual where my voice isn’t really heard, I would vote." - Chris Marcil
I’m not actually arguing that Crisp is the better baserunner. I have no idea if he is or not. But xanthan seemed pretty sure that Torres is better, and xanthan usually knows what he’s talking about, so I’d like to know why he thinks that — since the most obvious measurement of baserunning skill says the opposite.
Anyway, baserunning runs:
1. isn’t park adjusted, and that’s a big deal when it comes to AT&T
2. uses very small samples — remember, it uses the same principles as UZR but with even smaller samples
3. doesn’t include stolen bases & caught stealing.
BP's include basestealing
And have them basically even over the last three years.
Juan "Doesn't Cheat The Game" Perez, future CF for the World Champion San Francisco Giants.
"And besides, if I wanted to participate in a mindless patriotic ritual where my voice isn’t really heard, I would vote." - Chris Marcil
You've said that twice now. Define "baserunning"
So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.
I was happy to ignore a decade of minor league sucktitude when Torres seemed like a whole new player. I’m not so sure now.
by Monkeyking42 on Nov 3, 2011 11:38 AM PDT up reply actions
There’s also the injury concern with Torres. Are we going with Justin Christian as the backup CF? They’ll need to bring someone in for that role, and, right or wrong, there’s a good chance that person takes over everyday CF. I’m not going to make a stink out of that.
I like Torres and hope he gets a chance to prove himself again (and in Bochy’s defense, he’s never been shy about playing Torres as long as Torres hits), but as a 4th outfielder he’d still get starts, and he’d surely get used a lot as a pinch runner and defensive replacement. It’s not like his 2.1 WAR gets erased and replaced by Crisp’s 2.2.
At the price quoted above, do not want. But for the Sabean special of 12m over 2 years, Crisp would be fine. If he gets a better offer, there are other guys around that level who will be fine too.
by Monkeyking42 on Nov 3, 2011 11:51 AM PDT up reply actions

What should one consider the approximate age when a player should be thought of as “old”? I know it’s different for every player, but if I wanted to look up “good, old hitters” what should I use as the cutoff age for “old”?
I'm as tall as Mel. Why can't I hit 500 home runs?

Can The Giants Improve By Trading Tim Linecum?
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/can-the-giants-improve-by-trading-tim-linecum/
Snippets:
They owe around $82 million to just eight contracted players for 2012 – Barry Zito, Matt Cain, Aaron Rowand, Aubrey Huff, Brian Wilson, Freddy Sanchez, Javier Lopez, and Jeremy Affeldt – and are looking another $30 to $35 million in payouts in arbitration if they bring back most of the guys who they should probably want to return. Without a significant addition, their payroll looks to be about $115 million, giving them about $10 million to spend to get to the expected $125 million mark.
Even if Lincecum is a +6 win pitcher going forward, the Giants have historically been able to coax +1 to +2 win seasons out of run-of-the-mill arms, and it’s been going on long enough to no longer just be considered a coincidence./blockquote>

Can the Giants Improve with a Spellcheck?!
All right, that was cheap. Citing Vogelsong as an example of how the Giants and AT&T make any generic right hander better though…
That seems like a descendent of Cameron’s notorious “Bumgarner’s not that good because Vogelsong is having a good season” post. I still don’t get it.
And, that’s where the real rub for the Giants comes in. They play in AT&T Park, a place that can make any generic right-hander look fantastic. Whether it’s park effects, the influence of Dave Righetti, or some magical being hanging out in the air in San Francisco, the Giants have a long history of being able to turn mediocre pitchers into home run preventing machines, and in turn, get far better performance out of them than you’d expect.
Dave Cameron’s analytical prowess sure does take a hike when Los Gigantes starts getting discussed. Between Bumgarner, Raggs magic and now this…

While that may be true in principal, history would seem to indicate GMs won’t pay as big a premium in trade for a guy with limited major league experience. They will for a guy with a big track record of success, even if he’s already getting paid for it.
If one were shopping Pineda and Lincecum around to all the front offices in the league, who do you think would draw better offers?

Perhaps I should put it another way. Would Lincecum fetch a significantly better offer than a Rios caliber player now? Because Pineda’s first year is comparable to Lincecum’s (although Pineda’s was distinctly better), and that’s all we know was offered for Lincecum. My question isn’t if you would pay more for Pineda, it’s if most GMs would. The evidence doesn’t seem to point that way, as far as I can tell.
I'm as tall as Mel. Why can't I hit 500 home runs?
I've said it before: If I ran the Giants,
Lincecum wouldn’t be untouchable, but it would take such a huge overpay (/avoids “huge package”) that no team would do the deal.

…and perhaps the Lozano-for-Boras transaction- knowing Boras likes to take his time in negotiations – could accelerate the process
I wonder if ownership told Sabean that they wouldn’t work with Boras. I see people mentioning Sabean having a problem with Boras, but Sabean can’t allow for personal feelings to get in the way of his job. Ownership has been burned by Boras in the past, with deals and being used to drive up the price of players in negotiations with other teams.
I meant where big money is involved. Beltran had a no-trade clause, and had a preference for where he wanted to go. He pretty much projected his eventual move to the Giants. The Mets also had a big say on where he went.
