Forgive me if this is breaking: John Shea's douchebag article from yesterday
The point is that it could signal the start of a new era of Giants baseball, with or without Carlos Beltran.
We’ve heard from the Giants for years about one day getting younger, faster and more athletic, and perhaps that day is coming.

It’s called getting cheaper, Shea.

Getting younger is usually a euphemism for rebuilding mode. The best teams are usually the ones with the best players, not the youngest. From my own observations, the best teams usually have a good mix of veterans and youth.

Yeah

But for a few years the Giants were uniformly old. What with Winn, Finley, Roberts, Alou, Bonds, etc roaming the outfield.

I think it's kind of funny

That the Giants have paid so much lip service to getting younger, faster, and more athletic over the years, and even drafted a slew of extra-speedy outfielders with suspect bats, yet the actual position prospects they’ve graduated who lock down roster spots are either plodders (Posey, Sandoval) or ought start acting like plodders (Nate “17 for 31 career stolen base attempts” Schierholtz).

Brown looks like he’s got a shot to break the mold, but he’ll need to tighten up that CS%.

Calling Nate a plodder is kinda silly.

That said, the “youth movement” has been really, really overstated the past few years. The 2010 lineup was not exactly the makings of a multi-year dynasty (although having Buster and Pablo at least meant there were/are two pieces to build around).

I think Bhaakon was saying Nate should act like a plodder (as in not try to steal) because of his crappy CS%.

by jhiat00 on Nov 10, 2011 8:09 AM PST up reply actions

Not a plodder

His “top speed” is pretty dang good for covering the outfield and scoring from first, but he doesn’t seem to have the acceleration needed to steal bases. That and lousy jumps. And, IIRC, some of his CSs were failed hit-and-runs.

So I guess this means the Phillies making it past the 1st round of the 2010 post season was a fluke.

I'm sorry if this is BREAKING

I just need to get this out of my system.

What a fucking disgusting night in the history of American sports. I am ashamed that I ever considered myself a fan of Penn State or its football team.

Full disclosure: my family is from Philadelphia, and two of my uncles attended Penn State for at least 2 quarters (one graduated). This is a disgrace.

Sent this in an email to my dad this afternoon (before Paterno was fired)
In July Joe Posnanski moved to State College to write a book about Joe Paterno. In all likelihood, it would have been a feel-good retrospective on one of the great coaches in college football history, a celebration of a career that would, sometime in the near future, be coming to a close.

That book, of course, will never be written. Posnanski is staying in State College and is still writing about Paterno, but due to the horrifying situation unfolding in State College, one suspects the book he will write will be much different than the book he intended to write. He explains:

“I wrote just about everything I plan to write for a while about the Penn State situation here. I know there are people who believe that I have a responsibility to write more, to have an opinion, to come out strong, I know this because many, many people have written to tell me that in no uncertain terms.
I respect their opinion. But I disagree with it. The way I see it: I have a responsibility to write the best, most insightful and most honest book I can possibly write about Joe Paterno. That’s what I signed up for. I’m not backing down from that because of this awful, evil situation. I’m also not walking away from a life and a man. When something this horrible happens, it’s hard to hear yourself think — it’s impossible for me to hear anything. I won’t add to the noise. If you want to read instant and strong opinions about Penn State and Joe Paterno, I can assure you there is no shortage of howling there.”

It’s gonna be a hell of a book.

wow

what the fuck.

i’m also reading some speculation (conspiracy theory?) that Sandusky’s retirement in 1999 was directly related to the 1998 incident (and that Paterno had full knowledge of what happened). The reason they didn’t come forward in 2002? People would look up what happened in ’98 and realize that penn state had been continuing to harbor a child molester for 4 years.

If the trustees are serious about the action they took last night.

They ought to forfeit the game on Saturday and make public statement that hey are going to pay all employees for the time not worked and give the entire university community the opportunity to grieve for the victims, and pray/ponder/reflect/meditate for their well being and recovery.

With this new rumor (not officially reported yet) if true,

Makes you wonder even more about why things didn’t come forward, why McQuery’s dad’s first reaction was “get out of there.” Why no one ever reported to police."

Something ironic about all this is that something similar happened with a Giants scout in the DR. That hardly made a ripple.

So far, the things I would have done differently from Sabean

The first move I’d have made in the offseason would be to go to the owners and request the money for Reyes. If they say no, that payroll must remain in the 125ish range, I immediately start cutting costs to make a major acquisition – either of Reyes, or of Beltran and Rollins, or Beltran and Furcal, or some combination thereof.

That starts with letting Lopez and Affeldt walk, and replacing them with minor league lefties making the minimum – Verdugo and Runzler.

It continues with trading Sanchez, not for any major league roster players, but for a marginal prospect and salary relief.

It further continues by NOT OFFERING WILLIE BLOOMQUIST ANYTHING and instead relying on the affordable options we already have in the organization to be our backups.

So far, that’s about 5 (Affeldt) + 4.5 (Lopez) + 6 (Sanchez) million in savings over the path we’ve pursued so far. 15.5 million in 2012 payroll… say, that sounds a lot like what Reyes would cost.

They wouldn’t necessarily have done anything criminal, unless they obstructed justice or something. I’m not clear if they’re mandated reporters or not. I don’t know about PA, but in CA, most mandated reporters simply have to make a report to a supervisor, not law enforcement or CPS. So, it could be someone told someone else, and technically complied with the requirements of the law.

I’m sure the prosecutor would make deals, also.

Certificated and classified personnel who saw the incident must be the ones who call and file the report with CPS. If I recall correctly if it’s a family member you call cps if not you call the cops. In either case CPS is usually very very helpful once you can actually get them on the phone.

But in CA anyway the person that saw the event or heard the child say “my mommy smacked me in the head” is the one who makes the call. You should tell your supervisor, especially if the child has siblings at the school because there may already be an open CPS file.

Found this from Tuesday...
In July this year, Gricar was officially declared dead, though Weaver said the investigation into his disappearance is ongoing and new leads continue to emerge.

Weaver said that though everyone has a personal theory about what may have happened to Gricar — from suicide to foul play — there has been no evidence to support any one of them. The idea that the disappearance could be linked to the Sandusky investigation, Weaver said, is “highly doubtful.”

I wonder if it’s possible that the dude was so upset at what he found out [haven’t read the article] so disillusioned at the results of his investigation that he just decided he couldn’t bear to live anymore.

I heard a radio interview yesterday with someone from Yahoo

I thought that was outragous because 24 hours ago I didn’t think this was a systemic problem. I thought it was one sick and evil person and a handful of people who acted irresponsibly.

Now I believe there is a possibility that this goes far deeper into PSU and that knowledge of exactly what was going on was wider spread than we are seeing at the moment. If there is any more evidence to that, I would get in line behind you. As it is I think they should voluntarily forfeit Saturday’s game for the good of the community and the vicitms, and maybe the remaining games as well.
