LOL

You only beat me by 1 minute because you didn’t post the entire list. I’ll delete my copycat post.

Nothing too controversial, although I think that Hembree deserves to be in the top 20. Releivers don’t get any respect in these BA top 20 rankings.

2. Travis D’Arnaud, c, Blue Jays

There was a question about Hembree in the chat, he didn make the top 20 in either of his two leagues though Manuel said he was close in both.

Manuel: He was pretty close to making both lists, and he still throws straight butane at 98-99 at times. It’s easy and he’s got a little extra life. But he doesn’t really have a second reliable pitch yet; his breaking ball comes and goes. Give Dick Tidrow a little more time with him, and you might have a less-bearded replacement for Brian Wilson soon. Hembree’s one of the minors’ best relief prospects; I’d probably take him over Addison Reed myself.

That said, based on these league top 20s BA considers Chris Dominguez a better prospect than Hembree, which is alarming.

Wow yeah that is weird

I mean I know Hembree’s purely a reliever but he’s a damn good one, and Dominguez’s upside is what, Juan Uribe without the positional adjustment? Pedro Feliz with ~average D?

It's not just Hembree

There has been a huge bias against all relievers in each of these top 20 lists this year. I didn’t check this out yet, but I can’t remember seeing a single reliever make the top 20 in any league so far. If memory serves, that’s pretty much SOP for these lists over the past few years. They place much more of a premium on starters.

For the obvious reason that starters are much more valuable than relievers. Also starting pitcher prospects tend to be simply better pitchers and thus better pitching prospects than relievers who usually are one pitch guys or have other major red flags. It’s not a bias so much as a fair assignment of value.

That's the point I was trying to make

The vast majority of relievers really don’t get truly valued until they start doing a good job in the majors. The other thing to note is that the majority of major league relievers were starters in the minors (although that may be changing now).

But you said there’s a huge bias against relievers in he prospect lusts. I don’t see how that’s the same point as “it’s a fair assignment oftheir value.” I would say they start getting truly overvalued at the major league level.

Because in the minors evaluators are focusing much more on future ceilings and potential worth, while once you get to the majors it’s all about how you help your team win games. Any ranking of minor leaguers is going to bias heavily towards starters, because those are so difficult to develop into good contributors at the major league level. There’s no question that a starting pitcher is worth more to a team than a reliever, but the percentage of minor league starting pitchers who actually become decent major league starters is very low (often due to injuries)

I wouldn’t think that it’s lower than the percentage of mino league relievers who become decent major league relievers though, since as you point out a lot of major league relievers are former minor league starters, and also of course because decent relievers are pretty hard to come by in major league bullpens.

I’m guess I’m getting hung up on you use of the word “bias” which to me means an assumption which creates a flaw in the analysis. So where’s the flaw? Relievers aren’t that valuable in the majors, so they aren’t that likely to be valuable prospects.

Peguero and Brown

Does this mean that BA rates Brown well-over Peguero, or is the competition stiffer in the Eastern League? I mean Surkamp is closer to Wheeler than Pegs is to Brown (who was even considered for number 1).

We already know that BA ranks Brown well ahead of Peguero. In their end-of-the-season top 50 prospects list they had Brown at #43 or 44 overall while Peguero didn’t make the list. In act, if you look where Peguero was listed in just the EL rankings you have to see that he wouldn’t even be in the top 100 rankings for BA.

Quite probably but I wouldn’t say certainly. There are 17 leagues so that’s a base of 340 players, of whom I’d guess somewhere around 50 are repeats (and all those repeat guys are certainly going in). but of those other 280-300, I’m guessing that A and AA represent the lions share of the Top 100 prospects. The rookie leagues probably don’t get mire than the top 3 guys in the Top 100. Being #14 in a decentl strong AA league is certainly a ranking that suggests a player will be in consideration for the back end of Top 100.

But yes, Brown will be the much higher rated if the two.
