The Hoss
Matt Cain. He just does a lot of things very well.

I don't care what the Viceroy of Stats says...
I don’t care what his regression models show
, averaging nearly 220 innings with a sterling 3.27 ERA over the last three years.
Because that is elite production. I don’t care if he has outperformed his periferrals and his projections. He has pitched on average 220 innings and in the great majority of his starts gives up three runs or less.
I don’t care what you say about how he does it or how he shouldn’t be able to do it, he has done it.
"Do you smell that Kenny? That's hard news. Notice the lack of fornicating horses."
So when we look at measures of success, not predictors of it...
Matt Cain is as elite as it gets over the past three seasons. Only 5 pitchers have pitched at least 650 IP over that time and given up fewer runs.

Lee
Halladay
Grienke
Cain
You notice, the Giants are the only team to have produced two from this list. That is why they are good.
The Giants Won the World Series.

Maybe I'm missing something
But don’t the Phillies have two of those guys? And didn’t the Mariner start last season with 2 of those guys?

Bhaakon, I chose my words carefully
The entire post was looking at what has happened, not what will or should. Like Roger said the phillies have yet to put those two guys on the field together so, that’s why I used the word produce. This also indicates superior player development.

Yes, extremely carefully.
Sabathia, for instance, has given up 21 more runs than Cain over the last three season, but in 62 more innings, and (most of the time) facing a DH. Kind of arbitrary, but Cain’s certainly a legit #1 pitcher (though I think your selective endpoints oversell the case).
The Indians owners should be kicking themselves for pissing away him and Lee, if they’re not too busy counting their revenue sharing money.

Wow this comparison is almost as easy of an answer

Regarding the comparison of Matt Cain’s reputation for good control versus Garza’s reputation for erratic control:
In his career, 65.44% of Matt Cain’s pitches have gone for strikes, whereas Matt Garza has only gotten 62.40% of his pitches in the zone. That might not look like much at a casual glance, but it is actually fairly significant. Cain is closer to Greg Maddux (66.95%) and Garza is closer to Jonathan Sanchez (61.42%) than the two are to each other.
The walk rates are similar, but that does not make them similar pitchers. Cain is significantly better than Garza.
Et tu, Ribe?

Even as a joke
don’t do this again

I don’t understand why people type that way; it’s not just that it annoys the shit out of everyone else, or that it’s headache-inducing, it has to be really time-consuming to type all that out.
Ain't no Posey like a Buster Posey cause a Buster Posey don't stop...hitting.
Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)
If I ran a message board, people who typed like that would be banned.

I know
I can’t believe there’s people that actually seriously type that way. It was what made me decide not to go out with a certain girl once when she asked me lol. I just never understood it. I don’t know how she got so fast at it either!

I forget
What was Matt Cain’s postseason ERA?
