Guessing the Giants 2011 Minor League Pitching Rosters
In the tradition of the Fanpost that krukkuipandclint put up earlier, I thought it would be a fun and interesting exercise to try to predict where most of our minor league pitching prospects will end up starting out to begin the 2011 season. I think this is harder to do than predicting the position players, because pitchers (especially the young ones) are so mercurial and easily injured. Anyway, here's my guesses (SP = starting pitcher & RP = relief pitcher).
Augusta
SP: Brandon Allen
SP: Kevin Couture
SP: Jake Dunning
SP: Edwin Escobar
SP: Austin Fleet
SP: Kendry Flores
...
RP: Ryan Bean
RP: Edward Concepcion

RP: Matt Graham
RP: Stephen Harrold
RP: Mario Rodriguez
RP: Taylor Rogers
RP: Andrew Romo
RP: Shawn Sanford
RP: Gaspar Santiago
San Jose
SP: Jorge Bucardo
SP: Mike Kickham
SP: Reinier Roibal
SP: Seth Rosin
SP: Ryan Verdugo
SP: Zack Wheeler
...
RP: Brian Anderson
RP: Jose Casilla
RP: Hector Correa
RP: Chris Gloor
RP: Heath Hembree
RP: Chris Heston
RP: Kyle Nicholson
RP: Bryan Salsbury
RP: Jeremy Toole
RP: Jose Valdez
RP: Ben Wilshire
Richmond
SP: Justin Fitzgerald
SP: Mike Main
SP: Felix Romero
SP: Eric Surkamp
SP: Clayton Tanner
SP: Craig Westcott
...
RP: Craig Clark
RP: Kelvin Marte
RP: David Mixon
RP: Dan Otero
RP: David Quinowski
RP: Jason Stoffel
RP: Mike MacDonald
RP: Chris Wilson
Fresno
SP: Casey Daigle
SP: Shane Loux
SP: Darryl Maday
SP: Dan Runzler
SP: Ryan Voglesong
SP: Matt Yourkin
...

RP: Geno Espineli (no longer with team)
RP: Alex Hinshaw
RP: Waldis Joaquin
RP: Wilmin Rodriguez
RP: Henry Sosa
RP: Jake Stevens
RP: Craig Whitaker
Once again the SJ staff appears that it will be the class of the system (both SPs and RPs), and should give the Little Giants a very good shot of winning their 3rd straight Cal League title. It will be very interesting to see how the young guys handle the hitter's paradise that is the CAL, and if the more mature college guys (Kickham and Rosin) can learn to pitch effectively wild to keep hitters from hacking away against them. You'll also notice that I'm predicting Ryan Verdugo to continue his experimentation with the starting rotation that he ended the season with in the AFL.
The other team to watch would apperar to be Augusta. It will be exciting to see how the young kids respond to their first full season of pro ball. You'll notice that I, like others, am predicting that the Giants will try Jake Dunning as a starter this year. I would also love to see them do the same with Jacob Dunnington, but I'm not predicting it.
The upper levels are very thin in terms of starters, with only Surkamp, Westcott, and Main appearing to have much of a chance to ever be starters in the majors. There does appear to be much more depth and quality among the relief corps in the upper levels, though. The most interesting thing for me to watch in Fresno will be Dan Runzler's attempt to become a starter.

A few thoughts
I think they’ll take it slow with Allen and start him in EST and have him join SK.
I don’t think Roibal will jump all the way to SJ.
I think Fleet will go to SJ and Graham & Concepcion will be back at SK.
Everything else looks about right though

You could be right. The only one that I would argue with you on is Roibal. He’s turning 22 on Jan. 19th, he comes out of the regional Cuban baseball school that produced many of the best Cuban pitchers, and he’s a much more mature and complete pitcher than most realize. He throws his FB up to 95 mph, and has a nice sinker and slider, and a developing changeup. The Giants paid him a signing bonus of around $1M back in March 2010, so the only prospect that they paid more to in 2010 was Gary Brown. I think the Giants are going to want to challenge him, and they don’t want him slumming it in low-A ball.
Here’s an old scouting report on him:

Here’s his current bio page from BR:

I dunno, he's only thrown 8 IP in pro ball
I think he starts in Augusta and they promote him quickly if he dominates the SAL

Roibal
I agree with Fla-Giant. He’s older and faced advanced competition in the past. I think SJ is right for him.
Fla, where did you get that he was a seven-figure bonus baby? The only thing listing his bonus that I could find was here ($450K), and even that was higher than I thought we gave him ($350K).
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
Roibal pitched an entire season as a starter in Cuba’s highest league during the 2008-09 Cuban season. He finished 8-4 and had to have pitched at least 100 innings. That league is at least equivalent to the AZL.
Just looking at starters (but not relievers) over the last 5 seasons, there is plenty of precedence for prospects of Roibal’s experience level and age group (or even younger) skipping Augusta.
2010: Craig Westcott skips Augusta (at age 24) despite only 14 games, 7 starts and 43 innings in Scottsdale and S-K in 2009.
2008: Tim Alderson skips Augusta (at age 19) despite only 3 games, 2 starts, and 5 innings in Scottsdale during 2007.
2007: Paul Oseguera skips Augusta (at age 23) despite only 16 games, 0 starts, and 29 innings in S-K during 2006.
2006: Lincecum (at age 22) skips Augusta despite only 2 games, 2 starts, and 4 innings in S-K during the same season.
2006: Nick Pereira (at age 23) skips Augusta despite only 14 games, 9 starts, and 50 innings in S-K during 2005.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
One factor you didn't note: non-US
The list of players who skipped were US prospects. Most of the top international prospects get put in Augusta for their first taste of US minor leagues so that they can adjust to living in the US.
However, at 22, he is much older than most regular international prospects, so perhaps he doesn’t need as much adjustment.
How this affects Roibal, have no idea, but thought I would point this out.

Boy that upper minors depth is ugly
I’d add Clayton Tanner to the list of “potential MLB starters”. His peripherals are ugly, but if he keeps putting up shiny ERAs he’ll get a shot at some point.
Matt Graham – RP? You think this is because the Giants don’t believe in him as a starter anymore, or because they don’t believe in him as a pitcher? I’d imagine he’s a likely candidate to start. He started three games in Augusta last year, and he’s got to have more upside than Allen or Couture.
Ain't no Posey like a Buster Posey cause a Buster Posey don't stop...hitting.
Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to WIN that (TM)
If Tanner makes it, it will be because he keeps his walks down and gets a ton of GBs. Neither has been true to the extent they need to be, but you can see signs of hope there. Man, that K-rate last year scares me, though.
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
I think that the Giants still see Graham as a future starter. However, I think they’ll keep him in the pen for a while longer while he works out his mechs. As soon as he shows any kind of aptitude for controlling where his pitches are going on a consistent basis then I think they’ll start working him into the starting rotation. He should be a real challenging project for Steve Kline if he ends up in Augusta.

I wish they’d put Dunnington and Graham on a starting pitching track because of their respective upsides. But I basically agree with Fla-Giant here that they’ll end up in the pen.
Does anyone besides me believe that Concepcion will have a bounce-back year?
I could see them promoting Kickham all the way to SJ, although Augusta is probably more likely. But who would go in his place in SJ?
Fla, have you heard anything about Rosin being a starter? I thought he was one of the Giants’ “he-can-move-quickly-through-the-system guys-if-we-make-him-a-reliever” guys.
The most best pitching prospect in the upper minors might just be Wilmin Rodriguez (Alex Hinshaw with more control but an arm that’s barely attached). I think I’ll go cry softly to myself for a bit…
Hector Sanchez: Underrated. Fighting body bias since the 2009 off season. I still love you, son, even if you're fat.
I don’t have any links to back it up, but I believe strongly that the Giants have always seen Rosin as a starter. The reliever comment was just something that some on the net put on him as a way to say that he could get to the pros quicker if the Giants made him a reliever. That never made sense because the Giants already have a ton of high-upside relievers in the system, but not many starting pitching candidates with Rosin’s advanced abilities. Rosin isn’t a Chris Sale that could have been pitching out of a pro pen within a few months of sgining a contract. The Giants had Rosin pitching out of the pen (for the most part) and severely limited his innings while in Salem last season because he had pitched a lot of high-stress innings in his 2010 college season.
I’ve never been a Concepcion believer. Sure he’s a physical specimen and he can bring the heat. However, he’s never shown that he has the stamina to be a starter or much of a clue on how to be a pitcher instead of just a thrower. It seems to me that every other inning he pitches blows up in his face. I think his future is as a reliever, and that the Giants don’t have the space to keep him as a starter in 2011 – unless they want to keep him in Salem and out of full-season ball.

I can see both Tanner and Mixon starting the year in Fresno’s rotation, with Verdugo making the jump to AA. Definitely some exciting young arms in the lower minors!

Feel free, but it appears to me to be an exercise in futility due to the fact that we have no idea who the Giants will draft and sign in the upcoming draft. The pitching staff (and entire roster for that matter) at S-K will usually consist of up to 25-30% recently-signed draftees.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
I'll try
I’ll give this a shot I am only going to do 6 starters and 6 relievers though because that is the best that I can try
Augusta Low A:
1 Kickham SP
2 Fleet SP
3 Graham SP
4 Allen SP
5 Flores SP
6 Escobar SP
1 Concepcion RP
2 Dunning RP
3 Dunnington RP
4 Valdez RP
5 King RP
6 Wilson RP
San Jose A+:
1 Wheeler SP
2 Rosin SP
3 Bucardo SP
4 Roibal SP
5 Heston SP
6 Salsbury SP
1 Hembree RP
2 Toole RP
3 Marte RP
4 Correa RP
5 Gloor RP
6 Romo RP
Richmond AA:
1 Verdugo SP
2 Surkamp SP
3 Fitzgerald SP
4 Clark SP
5 Main SP
6 Westcott SP
1 Casilla RP
2 Stoffel RP
3 Wilmin Rodriguez RP
4 Reichard RP
5 Jarvis RP
6 Lively RP
Fresno AAA:
1 Tanner SP
2 Vogelsong SP
3 Runzler SP
4 Maday SP
5 Yourkin SP
6 Mixon SP
1 Joaquin RP
2 Edelfsen RP
3 Hinshaw RP
4 Whitaker RP
5 Quinowski RP
6 Loux RP
Fresno is hard to fill out because of all the minor league filler that will most likely be there.
No Salem-Keizer because they are mainly new draftees

ya that is true. I also noticied that i left out sosa too. I think sosa would be in AAA and Quiarte in AA

Regional bias
fun lists, thanks folks. One thing that can change placements: Wheeler, a Florida guy and young, could stay closer to home by going to Richmond. Casilla too. Tougher competition but familiar climate and lifestyle. And that would shield them from pitching in the high desert where their curveballs don’t work. If they throw curveballs.

San Jose bias
I don’t buy it for several reasons:
1. The Giants love to stack the SJ club with as many of their top prospects as possible. Given any doubt on where to slot prospects, SJ usually wins out. This is especially true when it comes to high school pitchers. I couldn’t find a single case in the past 8 years where the Giants had a pitcher that they drafted out of high school that skipped spending time in SJ. It’s also very rare in the case of college pitching draftees. The only one that I came up with who skipped SJ in the last 8 years was Kevin Correia – he pitched his first half season in Salem (the year he was drafted) then skipped directly to the AA Eastern League the following season.
2. Even if the Giants wanted to fast track a young pitcher, they often will have him start the season in SJ before promoting him to the EL. I think that they do this because the weather in the EL can be cold and unstable in April, while the California weather at that time is much more mild and predictable; and becuase they like the easy access that SJ provides for the west coast execs, scouts and evaluators. Even after MadBum and T2 had their monster 2008 seasons the Giants had both of them pitch in SJ for the first 5 weeks of the 2009 season.
3. Wheeler didn’t really do a lot in Augusta to show that he’s ready for such a big jump. BTW, Wheeler is a Georgia boy, born and raised, not from Florida.

Closest I can think of is Jonathan Sanchez. He threw two dominating playoff starts in SJ after having spent the year in Augusta, and started the following year in the EL. A couple months later he was in SF’s bullpen, the beginning of two pretty solid years of screwing with his development.

you're right,
humid climate yes, lifestyle no. Driving distance to Florida is all.
I just don’t like the situation of so many games in the high desert. Gets hitters over amped and discourages pitchers from applying spin.

If anything, he would then go back to Augusta
Wheeler missed a heck of a lot of time of development. No way they jump him to Richmond from the get-go. If they would rather put him closer to home, they would just send him to Augusta, which actually is close to home, as Richmond, while East Coast, is all the way up in Virginia.
As noted, San Jose is going to be a regular stop for most top prospects because then the top execs and baseball scouts can go down and check them out, up close.
