At least that's the way I interpreted this Buster Olney tweet.

@Buster_ESPN Buster Olney
Giants could be another possibility for Pujols. I think the Cards can forget about the hometown discount with Albert;top of the market cost.

He says we're a possibility

But I don’t see it. Pujols won’t fit in the budget and we already have Belt lined up at 1B. Obviously Pujols is much better, but if we’re going to be spending $30mm we don’t have, it should be at a place where we don’t already have a great, cheap option.

As long as we’re dreaming that they magically came up with $30 million, I would bet Belt would be willing to move to left field to make room for one of the best players in MLB

Seriously? Who cares? We’d have Albert freekin’ Pujoles. Projecting Belt/Neal/KieschnickBrown/Peguero/Parker to even make the majors, let alone be regulars… talk about nice problems to have…

LOL fanshot

So Buster Olney sends out a tweet listing future possible destinations for Pujols, and then sends out a second tweet saying he omitted the Giants and you think this means the Giants could get him? There’s one possible destination in Pujols’ future, and that is St. Louis. Nobody would outbid the Cardinals for their franchise player, because the only two teams that can, are set at first base.

Cubs, Mets could make a run (the Mets would trade Ike Davis for an arm).

What I meant to say is no way the Giants even want Pujols after yesterday’s signing of Brad Eldred.

For the record

I generally agree with this and I can’t imagine the circumstances where the Giants actually sign Pujols. However, I think what’s actually interesting about this is that Pujols apparently won’t take a hometown discount from the Cardinals. Given this, I think the Angels and especially the Cubs are very much in play. They both have tons of money, needs at 1B, and, maybe more importantly, the Cubs would love to stick it to their biggest rival.

by Mike Benjamin Hit King on Jan 16, 2011 12:56 AM PST up reply actions

Angels would have to trade Morales. The Cubs are the huge target for Fielder and Pujols. But Fielder will end up in Chicago and there’s no way Pujols is leaving St. Louis.

You don’t think the Angels would find something to do with Morales if they had the chance to sign Pujols? Why is there no way Pujols is leaving St. Louis? It doesn’t sound like him and the front office have a great relationship currently.

THE THING IS, IT HAPPENED - 11/1/10

by Mike Benjamin Hit King on Jan 16, 2011 1:25 AM PST up reply actions

I think they absolutely would

But signing a great 1B isn’t usually a big deal if you’ve already got a great 1B.

I don’t think Pujols is leaving St. Louis because ultimately the Cards will pay him whatever he wants. If Pujols leaves, the fans would tear down the stadium, and that great rotation would be wasted. He says he wants to test the FA market, but I can’t imagine anyone other than the Cubs would offer him more than the Cardinals, and the Cards would come close to any offer. It’s like the Yankees and Derek Jeter. Two months ago, we were hearing about how the negotiations are going horribly, Jeter’s pissed, the Yanks don’t want to pay him, etc. It’s not like there was ever any chance of him leaving.

Well, there are great first basemen, and then there’s Albert Pujols. He’s in a different category altogether.

"Lee pitches...Renteria hits a high drive, deep left-center field, David Murphy going back, he's on the warning track—it is...go-one!"

by El Person on Jan 16, 2011 6:11 PM PST up reply actions

Totally this

Also Jeter situation is somewhat different. He had been there for many years and new york would have kept them there as a franchise player. Albert is a on a whole different level than most great first basemens.

by waffles on Jan 17, 2011 8:55 AM PST up reply actions

Pujols has been in St. Louis for ten years. Jeter’s been in New York for 15. And if Pujols doesn’t define the term “franchise player” I don’t know who does.

I don’t think the Giants are going to get him, but I think anybody who says there’s no chance Pujols doesn’t test the market is fooling themselves.

Then again

Scott and Zito are no Albert Pujols. The dude is the type of player where you know you can gamble on him. Zito was surprising since he won the cy-young, but I’m pretty sure Albert will never horribly regress like that.

Teixeira AND the godawful Arod contract that’ll be paying him $25 million per, ten years after he’s dead. But on the bright side, AJ’s contract will end one of these days. That said, I’d still give them pretty decent odds to be the high bidder if Pujols ever got on the market.

by Roger on Jan 18, 2011 6:00 PM PST up reply actions

I think Boston gets Pujols

Between JD Drew and Ortiz alone they have what could be Pujols first year salary at about 26 mill. Both are FA’s after this year and I doubt either will come back. Ortiz you would think under normal circumstances, but if you could get Pujols instead you’d do it obviously.

With Crawford, Pedroia, Youkilis, Pujols and Gonzalez you have the nice making of a championship lineup.

by Hobbes2d on Jan 18, 2011 5:25 PM PST reply actions

I highly doubt they're going to take two plus defensive players

And DH one of them, especially if it means paying $50M a year for both of them. They’d have a ridiculous lineup, but it’s just too expensive with the money they committed to Crawford already and the money they’re going to commit to Gonzalez in a few months.

Don’t forget they’ll be adding Gonzalez new contract figure to next year’s payroll, not this year’s (when he’s on the books for a bargain basement sum of $5.5mil).

Unless of course they back out of the handshake deal they supposedly have with him and let him become a FA in hopes of reeling in Pujols instead.
