maybe it is just because I started folling the Giants in 86
but for some reason this guy will always have a place in my memories of Giants in the past, along with Phil "Russian" Oullette (I probably spelled that wrong). I could never figure out why this guy didn't get a shot.

From everything that can be deciphered
from both of those players minor league careers (some missing OBP’s)…
They seemed to have pretty solid upside.
Rick Lancelloti is especially surprising because he hit 41 homeruns in AA early in his minor league career… And all he was awarded was 41 major league plate appearances.

And he was awarded those 41 PA's 3 years later...
Seriously… What did the guy have to do?

Isn’t Lancelloti the real Crash Davis?

As in, the minor leaguer most like Crash Davis? Maybe. As in, the guy who Ron Shelton based the character of Crash Davis on? No. That would be Crash Davis — Laurence “Crash” Davis to be more precise. The guy who hit 50 doubles for the Durham Bulls in 1948 after serving his country in WWII, which ended his major league career (parts of three seasons with the Philadelphia A’s in the early 40’s).
Shelton was recently a guest on the ‘30 For 30’ podcast with Bill Simmons and told a great story about how the character came to be — based on the real Davis, who Shelton assumed was dead — and how Davis called him out of the blue to see why there was a character based on him. It turns out Davis’ real story is pretty epic in itself.

Ah, no, I meant as in the guy with the all time record for most career HRs in the minor leagues. I think Lancellotti at least held that record at one time.

I think you’re right.

Did you ever see The Best of Times, the one about the Taft/Bakersfield football game with Kurt Russell and Robin Williams? I think that’s an underappreciated gem (except for the terrible “football” action), but a lot of that has to do with the fact that we played Taft one time when i was in high school, and one of the kids after wards was talking about their upcoming annual crushing by Bakersfield High.
