The Mariners' Ackley had his 5th HR in 52 PCL games.
Moved to the rotation to finish the season, Joaquin had 20 H, 13 BB, and 10 K in 15.1 IP with a 6.46 ERA in his five starts. Medders, one of five Grizzlies relievers, pitched a perfect 7th inning.

good to see Belt finish his year with a blast
here’s to hoping he’s for real and proves it next season

Agree on that, especially after having the hat trick 2 days in a row. For some reason McC missed the Minor Lines on those days. Looks like he’s a little over-matched right now – needs another year in AAA. Not as big as I pictured him to be.

.229/.393/.563
.200 BABIP
13/15 BB/K
Even if 60-70 PAs were a relevant sample size, the only number there that would suggest him being over matched is the K%. Now I didn’t see him in person, but the numbers don’t suggest there’s a ton to worry about.

He was more than a bit overmatched...
(and I say that from having seen him at the level)
What you can look at in the small sample size is the change of peripherals. That strikeout rate jumped in a big, big, way. He was having problems reading Triple-A breaking pitches and his judgement was severely affected. For a guy who had a hallmark of fouling off the pitches he was guessing wrong on, he stopped doing that pretty suddenly I have faith he’ll adjust, but adjustments take time.
Definitely, he needs to start next season in Triple-A.

Steve, what do you know about Jose Flores? The numbers are intriguing.
While you were reading this, Carlos Willoughby just stole second base.
Very little quite frankly. He has been used a utility infielder with a fair amount of playing time throughout his pro career. He played his way into more regular playing time this year. It will be interesting to see in the off-season how scouts reviewed him and then to see how he fares next year, perhaps with a promotion to the upper minors.
I’ll admit, he’s never been one of the guys that I’ve marked to follow until recently. I’m going to try and get a real good look and pay attention in the post-season.

In both his stints here in SK I liked Jose quite a bit. He seems to make all the plays with decent range and a very good, accurate arm. His hitting was a bit suspect but he seems to be figuring it out. For a variety of reasons he didn’t get a ton of playing time, usually related to higher ranked prospects/draft picks blocking him.

Jeez
Way to look strong Gary Brown…
50 PA’s=SSS, I know, I know….But still….159/296/227 while striking out 25% of your PA’s in rookie ball, ugh….Just ugh….

Did not impress me much in the limited time I got to see him (2 games). The night he had the hat trick took 2 called 3rd strikes which at this level may not mean anything at all due to the varying strike zone but the ones he swung at were clearly up and out of the zone.
I was also not overwhelmed by his range in the outfield, he made the routine plays just fine but there were a couple hit out there a ways that I think Lofton would have been able to catch had he been playing and Brown was really not very close.
Maybe my expectations are too high but our last 2 number 1’s that came through were pretty polished when they stopped by briefly and I did not sense that with Brown. He does however seem like a nice guy.
My most recent summer son’s home run was an absolute shot, definitely the hardest hit of the 3 bombs that night. Maybe there is hope. I also think he is the best defensive catcher I’ve seen here since I started attending regularly in 2001.

THANKS again Steve
for a fun minor league season. San Jose’s playoffs start Saturday! Always fun to see the roster padding. One year it was Frandsen dropping down a level or 2. Belt could do that, he was a SJ Giant quite a while.
proud, yes I said proud, adoptive papa of "Geno" Eugenio Velez--
more game changing bunts than Buster Posey!
Rohlinger not getting a callup due to concussion
couldn’t the team put him on the 60-day DL and add Belt (or someone else) to the 40-man and call him up instead?

I say leave Belt alone
already a long year and he would just ride the pine anyway.
Yes, but...
that would mean that after the season someone would have to be DFA’d pretty early on. Rohlinger is the only utility infielder who can play third reasonably well right now on the 40 in the minors, so you don’t want to put him out there right now, especially since you’d have to put someone back on later to be that emergency guy.
I mean, sure, a couple of spots will probably open up…probably…with Fontenot and Ross being let go, but those are spots that could, and probably should, be reserved for offseason acquisitions.
Let Belt relax until the AFL starts, I’d say.

Also the spots opened by FA (Guillen, Burrell, Huff, Renteria, Uribe) but I agree, there’s no need to start the 40 man crunch right now. Belt’s had a good season but the increasing K rate as he went up the levels suggests he has more to work on. He’s not the “missing ingredient” that will get us into the playoffs or win a championship.
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
good to hear that Decker will join the coaches witht he big club.
