A request to the moderator

If I knew how to do this without a fanpost I would have done so.  So excuse me.

Here is my request:  How bout having TWO post game threads.  One  devoted ONLY to discussing the game and the Giants.  That would be particularly nice as the Giants chase a pennant.  The other can be the more free form thread that is the only option currently available.

The only other option now is for a fan post on a particular aspect of the game in the hopes that people stay on course and discuss the game.  i tried that once and it didn't go over well.  The general tenor was "this should be in the post game thread not a fan post"  I'm not  complaining,  just "reporting."

Again, I'm not being critical of the "free form" post game threads.  I understand that people become "friends" on these boards and have fun simply conversing.

I'd just like an option to go to a baseball/giants/game only thread without having to weave through 1,500 posts - many of which have nothing to do with the game/giants and/or baseball.

Thanks for "listening"

I heartily concur. Many times I’ve thought about delving into the GT or PGT (since I miss most of the night games), but then think better of it because my work PC can’t handle 1,000-post threads. And I just want to know how the starting pitcher looked, or how Buster did, or who played RF.

I don’t know how you’d do it, but I’d love to see it.

While you were reading this, Carlos Willoughby just stole second base.

We tried the dedicated OT threads for awhile, but they got unmanageable very quickly and were abandoned. I don’t really know how to deal with this, honestly. Overflow post-game threads could be a good idea. I don’t know. Maybe something like Purple Row does, where they have the “Morning Rockpile” that sort of takes another look at the game from last night and looks around the NL West? That could be kind of a cool feature to add.

I agree that the post-game threads get unwieldy. I rarely open them because my computer can’t handle it. I like the “Morning Rockpile” idea. Of course, we’d need a name that doesn’t remind me of the Rockies and their damned dinosaur.

Agreed. And a lot of time things go OT in the midst of discussing something relevant to the game. You’re basically setting people up to start bickering with one another about when something has gone from relevant to OT. And that’s not going to help anyone.

I'm wondering about this

I’ve never had a problem loading a thread (even GIF filled ones) on a five year old Dell desktop which has seen extensive use. That means that any thread people can’t load they’re trying to get on a computer that is worse than a five year old Dell desktop, and if you computer is that old and bad I can’t imagine you’re able to do anything on it besides play solitaire after you wait twenty minutes for it to boot up. Maybe it’s their Internet connection, but anything DSL or above (which everyone should have now; if you’re using dial-up, you may as well just ditch the internet entirely) should be able to load it fine considering I’ve had no problems loading threads on said desktop with a shared DSL connection while downloading stuff. Maybe I’m just special, but I don’t know how people are having these many problems.

But aren’t a ton of comments of the “stfd” or “f you rowand” or “URIBE!!!” variety? So while 2 threads should keep it more on topic, won’t there still be a huge number of comments anyway? And a lot of them will not have much to say anyway, more of a shift a kind of thread.

Honestly, I think it would be easy. Whatever mod is around just has to create an overflow game thread with maybe five or ten directed questions, hide it from the front page, publish it, and provide a link as one of the early run of comments in Grant’s big post-game thread. As long as you can load the first 10 or so comments of the PGT, you can access the dedicated PGT.

To make it super easy, just use a basic form to start discussion.

1) How did (pitcher) look?
2) Notable offensive performances?
3) Notable defensive performances?
4) Manager’s performance?

With some variety depending on whether or not something super cool happened.

I think that the random and free-form nature of the threads are what truly define this place. Anyone can discuss baseball in a straightforward manner; it’s all the peripheral discussions that give this site character and an identity. This blog is really a “community” of sorts that represents one subset of the entire Giants fan base, and this is the subset that I choose to frequent. I think that one must simply accept this place for what it is.

I think that the suggestion in this post is valid, but will only serve to fracture the user-base.

And I can’t speak for the other mods, but while I’m more than willing to find solutions to the problem of not having a workable space to discuss games, I am not at all willing to do anything that would move towards “fracturing the user-base”. So you can basically just let go of that idea right now.

And if i do, there’s 500 comments after i wake up and there’s nothing left to discuss with all the OT comments. But i do appreciate the lax attitude this blog has, and it is very entertaining. Very nice blog just wish i could have more giants related discussion.

This is sort of how I’m reading it. I get how people feel about loading the giant threads and totally understand the frustration, but trying to force everyone to stay on topic just isn’t going to work: 1) the moderators don’t have time to sit there and make sure we’re all talking baseball 2) People will just start fighting with each other about how on/off-topic others are, which isn’t going to do anything to help the posts be smaller.

Now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I think a second thread is a great idea. Keeps the threads manageable but still allows for the fact that people are going to stray from topic.

And I’d also say, even though I like the current configuration, I understand that this clearly bothers more than a few people, we should try to figure out a compromise, like the proposed second thread and/or morning wrap-ups. Maybe we won’t all be completely happy but hopefully most of us can agree with that?

Well, I’ll just take this time to clarify things, rather than having people speak for me. This is the SBN Giants site. It’s the biggest Giants baseball blog community there is. I come here for the Giants related baseball discussion. I’d like to see a lot more of that. Seems to me that’s the purpose of this site. I don’t see the value, or the appeal, of most off topic discussions. What did you have for lunch today? Who fucking cares. It’s a boring topic to begin with, and that’s before taking into account that I don’t even know you people. If you’re just trying to hang out with friends online, it doesn’t seem to me the Giants SBN site is really the appropriate venue for that. I’m merely voicing my point of view.

Josh, do you remember having an epic argument on Todd Linden back in the day (I think in the WFB days). My memory is that went on for like a week? I took the AAAA position as I recall.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

by Roger on Sep 8, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I honestly have no memory of that — though I do recall you mentioning it once before, right around the time Linden was getting some major league AB’s. I always thought Linden had a shot, but I was never all that into him. Really, I just wasn’t into prospect watching at all back then — I just wanted to hear when they were ready for the majors.

I did like Linden’s OBP skills, though, and I knew the Giants needed a young slugger in the pipeline, so it’s possible I just wishcasting and refused to back down when challenged. That kinda sounds like something I’d do. On the other hand, there were a couple of other Josh’s back then (that’s why I added the “from Hollywood” tag upon first commenting) — there was Josh from The New Giants Thrill, and at least one other (olympic josh?).

Could the problem be approached from the opposite direction? Create a “conversation” thread that people can have open separate for BSing, while the baseball related threads can remain more on topic. People can easily jump between threads if they want to contribute or follow both (not much more effort than keeping up with 1500+ posts as it currently works, IMO), even reference portions or note to move a line of discussion over. My computer can keep up once everything is loaded, but my head can’t, lol. I pretty much gave up on trying to get involved in those early on.

We did try something along those lines and it didn’t work very well. The issue tends to be that a dedicated “conversation” thread doesn’t stop conversation from growing organically in other threads. I think the hope is that a dedicated “baseball” thread might curb the organic process for at least that one particular thread.

Or rather: It might be easier to curb off-topic content in a single thread than it would be to try to use a single thread to curb it across the entire website.

It can be tricky to navigate those big threads, and it’s easy to get distracted by some OT discussion. It can also take practice. a newcomer may not know to look beyond the massive OT discussion for the baseball kernels.

But really its these kernels that these complaints against the 1000 comment monsters are looking for. How do you answer the “How did MadBum pitch?” “Yeah Great!” or a bit more informative: “Velocity was up. Stayed in the zone. The Snakes seemed baffled. I think his stat-line well reflects his play today” Maybe you get some sort of more professional sounding scouting report. But really, we can say a couple of things to answer the question. Most of us agree and the “discussion” ends before it begins.

Then someone asks for advice with working out, child rearing and sitting in a baseball stadium, or says something about their favorite pork or pork-like product. An actual discussion ensues.

I think we need to me more open to Ctrl-F – load thread. skim it or search it for the topic you want. If you want to talk baseball, post your own comment – it will get some response, and some people will read it. More people will read it than if you make it a fan shot. If it is making a big baseball discussion splash, or you honestly expect it to, then it can move to its own Fanpost.

I’ve had great success in the past asking questions in GDT or PGTs about certain play – what was the deal with Nate’s pickoff? How did Posey look a the plate? But then they get answered and the wave rushes on to discuss todays hot-not-baseball-topic. Whatever.

That also means we should try to accept that people may have missed a baseball discussion somewhere in the thread, if something pops up as a comment at the bottom, even when GASP it was already briefly discussed above. An entire conversation could happen about Bumgarner’s or Lincecum’s performance, without using his real name, or even MadBum, or whatever his most popular nickname is. “How durty was Durty?” “So how fast was BTTJ today?” “He was …” Will escape the Ctrl-F tactic.

Not that easy...

Control (or Command)-F will find every instance of every time he’s named, but because of the way comments nest, they give it to you not in any chronological order, but in the order they appear on the page.

That becomes tedious in threads of more than a few hundred posts.

It works, but it’s not efficient at all.

The only problem I have with the front page/Post Game threads

Are the baseball related topics that actually do come up in there that should be moved to a fanpost or a fanshot. I tend to ignore the 1000+ threads if I’m that far behind. But I know breaking news is often posted in there and the grougthink is expressed in these huge threads; whereas, the fanshot dedicated to that topic only has about 20 comments.

So, if it’s a new baseball-related topic, try to move it to a fanpost/shot/diary. And if you’re in these big threads, try to encourange others to discuss the topics in said fanshots. Mkay, thanks.

I am conflicted

I certainly love the OT discussions and am very prone to go way off topic myself. But one of the reasons, I so love Minor lines is that it is almost always all about baseball and it is also very manageable in terms of comments. One of the first things I can do when I get to my office in the morning is to rip through the entire post and comments in about 3 minutes. That is wonderful. I dread the day that Minor lines ends up like the GDT or the PGT.

Lookout Landing did this

They cracked down hard on the OT-ness of the site by having a dedicated OT thread and having a significant portion of the hardcore user base that bought into the idea and helped self moderate. Without that, it’s probably impossible to manage, as it’s too much for just the moderators to handle.

by marcello on Sep 7, 2010 10:12 PM PDT reply actions

Honestly, I’m beginning to think that California Golden Blogs use of DBD’s (something I’ve criticized them for because of how OT it is) is actually a good way to go. It does do a good job of keeping the OT stuff contained, while all their front page sports stuff and any sports fanposts stay very sports related. Of course they seem to have a much smaller user base than here, so anything they do will be easier/work better, and at times I find the lack of participation in the sports threads over there….weird, especially since the daily OT threads seem to get so many comments.

by Missing Barry on Sep 8, 2010 5:29 AM PDT up reply actions

The problem that I’m really seeing is that ‘Shift-A’ has become it’s own meme.

Shift-A is convenient because it bypasses EVERYTHING. Off-topic and on-topic. So the people that are wanting to discuss baseball are lost in the Shift-A as are the recipes, music discussions and chronicles of watching a marathon of Star Wars movies on some cable network.

But it alienates the people who are really trying to discuss baseball, because the very users who would be the ones they want to talk with will Shift-A right by them.

I’m certainly not saying I want everything to be heavily moderated or deleted…but why is a reasonable suggestion being received with comments akin to ‘Get used to it’, ‘Move on’ and ‘He wants others to conform to him.’

Look, I enjoy the friendly community here, and I do enjoy off-topic jokes, but all good things are only good in moderation (no, not at all a reference to moderators, truly just a reference to a quote made long before computers). The off-topic banter made me a regular here…but the excess of it has made me a very irregular poster. And frankly, some of the reactions to this suggestion have turned me off to the community more.

Baseball brought us together. It’s not the only thing we have in common. It’s not the only thing we can talk about, or want to. It’s easy to get lost in the other stuff out there. I get that.

But the attitude that has started to come about in recent months is disturbing. Anyone here who has been a part of message boards in the past I’d think can see the pattern that is beginning again:
• A community starts off small, but grows because it’s great.
• A hardcore following develops.
• Things become so commonplace that even within a matter of months, or just weeks, they become considered tradition.
• New users continue to join. Some try to start new things, or change existing things. The ones who are quiet but valuable are lost in the din. The ones you notice are the loudest…and often, most grating.
• Changes, or new people outright, are resisted by the hardcore following. Fights develop, and mean-spirited things (even such non-banworthy statements like ‘Get over it’) are said to people trying to genuinely contribute.
• People get alienated. New people stop showing up, except the aforementioned loud ones. Old ones disappear after fights, disagreements, or just real life.
• The once-great community stagnates, and falls apart. A new community appears somewhere else, and the flocks go that way, except for some of the most valuable diehards, who refuse to leave.

I don’t want to see that happen here. I’ve seen it happen to all sorts of online communities. Hell, I’ve seen it happen at good bars or clubs, or just about any gathering of people.

But reading this thread today was the first time I saw the cracks forming here.

Suggestion

I know you like to post in the minor lines, I’m sure in part because it stays primarily on point. Why don’t you (or anyone else on this site who feels the same way you do, including the OP) just make your own daily baseball talk only post every day. It could be called Hardcore Baseball 9/9 (or whatever the date was), and would be dedicated entirely to serious baseball talk — no OT allowed. A mod could participate, or at least check in often enough to keep order.

I know I would check in something like that and respect the rules. I’m sure many others would, too. Those who find it too dry could simply avoid that thread.

by Missing Barry on Sep 8, 2010 5:32 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, my theory is that a daily OT thread will not “herd” the off-topic stuff. It will just be another place for it.

A dedicated baseball thread doesn’t have that problem. It also doesn’t “herd” the baseball discussion, but it does keep the other stuff out.

I said it elsewhere in this thread: It’s much more reasonable to keep the off-topic stuff out of a single thread than to try to wash it out of all but a single thread.

You’re the mod, I’m sure you know a lot more about it then me. The only thing I’ll note is CGB seems to do the daily OT thread and it does work well at keeping it contained, but like I said elsewhere, that might just be because it’s a smaller community.

by Missing Barry on Sep 8, 2010 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions

the problem with that

is what’s been mentioned before, a lot of the OT discussion in Front Page threads stems from on topic posts, or some reference Grant put in the main post.

Some interesting thoughts. I just saw an example that kind of fits into part of your storyline that’s something I feel like raising. A new user just put up a fanpost about the Dodgers intentionally losing. Not a well thought out Fanpost or anything, but still, it’s a baseball related fanpost and we’re talking about a new user here. So….what happens? The community members immediately start putting up OT threads to hijack it. Look, I get that it’s not a quality fanpost and many of you have no interest in participating in it. That’s fine, you don’t have to comment. It’s still about basebal, and you guys really have enough OT conversations as it is. And instead as a group, the community comes off first as kind of dickish towards a new user, and second as undermining possible baseball talk. Sometimes good conversations can spawn out of even poor fanposts. Instead we get unnecessary OT talk….

by Missing Barry on Sep 8, 2010 5:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Hi there MB,

Quick question for you: I went to the Dodgers fanpost you referenced and I honestly don’t see the OT hijacking you are referencing. Everything in that thread seems on topic to me. Can you give examples from that thread that you feel were OT?

I am not trying to be argumentative but really trying to understand your POV. It seems to me that the Dodger post meets all the criteria you and others who share your view are looking for:

1) Focused on baseball without OT distractions
2) Smaller number of posts
Etc.

Other fanposts such as the Matt Downs one and the Sabermetrics class also seem to stay on topic. So might the solution be to leverage the fanposts feature more to raise topics you’d like to discuss?

by Bochean on Sep 8, 2010 10:49 AM PDT up reply actions

There were some OT posts, but they were promptly hidden.

by Natto on Sep 8, 2010 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions

I see.

Interesting. It seems then in this case that the current system works quite well if it is sustainable. In other words, if the mods have the bandwidth to ensure fanposts such as the Dodgers post stay on topic, then users such as MB can have a place to have baseball discussions without distractions.

I totally understand this – I just get frustrated by what I see as complaints about the site that I don’t really see what the answer to is. And just saying, “Stop making OT posts” or “Stop replying to OT posts” isn’t realistic, unless you want us to start deleting OT comments, which, again, isn’t realistic because I don’t think anyone on the site has the time to moderate it that heavily. We tried a dedicated OT Post and it worked at first, but ran out of steam very quickly. We tried a dedicated baseball Post-Game Thread but no one seemed interested in it. Hopefully, we’re going to try a few other things out, but don’t act as though all we’re doing is telling people to “Get over it”, please.

If there isn't some kind of technical way to assist people who don't like the OT stuff

Like say the nested threads at Dailykos – then I think you have to shrug and say “we can’t be all things to all people”.

There are plenty of other blogs out there discussing Giants baseball. There are plenty of resources that would allow someone to create their own blog discussing Giants baseball. I don’t ascribe to the “love it or leave it” philosophy, but I also don’t ascribe to the “I don’t like it, so you should change it” philosophy.

While I do appreciate attempts to help the situation than just complaining, including my own, I do find it ironic that the baseball discussion is something that needs to be relegated to the side.

Obviously, it’s been made clear that people don’t take to the OT stuff being relegated to the side either, but it does bring up questions of impressions of the blog new users will get.

It doesn’t need to be relegated to the side. Baseball discussion happens in regular posts. Despite the reputation, I would say that in most regular posts, there is more baseball discussion than OT discussion. But it apparently happens at too big a volume/too big a pace for some people, so creating a fanpost for just baseball could create a venue where you could have those discussions without the volume problem.

I don’t know what else you want us to do except for, I don’t know, tell people to talk less about everything in regular posts.

Then you’re misreading me, and I apologize for not being clearer. I do not want, nor think, this is a job for the moderators outside of different posts to try and organize things. I don’t want, or am suggesting, that you as moderators tell us what to post or what not to post. I do think that a little direction to where is warranted, as the size of this site has ballooned significantly over the last two seasons, and things that were manageable with 100 regulars are not so manageable with 500 or 1,000, as I am very sure you are aware and don’t need to be told.

And don’t think I’m not opposed to OT stuff. I pretty much ran the Alou’s Daughter threads of the ESPN board, which is as off-topic as it got. But that board was designed in a more traditional method, which meant that as many posts as that got to be, it would be just one title on the screen others who didn’t want to participate in could avoid. That wouldn’t be feasible on this setup.

My main reason for my posts in this thread is to try and let it be heard that there are regulars, if I may be so bold as to be thought of one, who believes that this is a problem that needs some sort of addressing, and that it’s not just a few outspoken people who sit in a severe minority. I got the impression, right or wrong, that this was how LexLuth and MissingBarry were getting treated. If it was the wrong one, I’m sorry I got confused…but I did get confused.

I don’t want to see people leaving McC. I don’t want any further fracturing of the user base. And I’m afraid I don’t have a suggestion to deal with these issues that are realistic within the bounds of the software behind SBN.

If I would offer any suggestion, once the offseason begins, perhaps we can make the entire user base a part of this. Perhaps a polling of users experiences with other message boards, inside and outside of SBN, to see how they’ve dealt with these issues. I’m not creative enough to find a solution (or perhaps, I’m just too tired right now), but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people out there. And perhaps from that set of ideas, some sort of consensus, and new attempts to deal with this, could come.

I would even be willing to spearhead these posts. I’m not a mod, nor do I want to be one or to even imply that I have any sort of authority here, and I don’t want to overstep my bounds. But if this would be a favorable idea to people, and the authorities on the board are okay with it despite my outside interests, I’d be happy to.

I think you make a pretty good point that it’s really the format of SBN that makes this conversation very difficult – with a more traditional message board format, it probably wouldn’t be quite as big of a deal.

I do think we could do well to bring Fanposts back – for whatever reason, no one ever seems to use them for anything anymore, but they’re probably the closest thing we have in the SBnation format to a more Message Board-y type format. Maybe it’s because people were too overzealous with hijacking way back when. But we used to have pretty good discussion in Fanposts/Diaries and I don’t see why that couldn’t happen again. Now, Fanposts that say nothing but, “Huff is good! I like watching the Giants play! 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 75 75” isn’t going to get much started, but I don’t see why we couldn’t go back to using Fanposts more than we do these days – find a topic of conversation you want to talk about, put together some words about it and offer up a discussion starter.

On that note...

I know SBN has a structured template for the sites, but is there a way to adjust the number of Fanposts shown, or organize them differently (such as by topic rather than just recommended and recent)? If you don’t want to, or can’t, show too much behind the curtain I’d understand, but perhaps changing those up might help encourage posting there.

Each user can adjust how many Fanposts they can see (I think I have it on 25?) but I don’t know about the other thing.

We can add interesting posts to the Front Page every once in awhile.

I don’t know that I think of it as “relegating” anything to the side. Baseball talk happens in most threads on the site. Off-topic talk happens in most threads on the site. It’s not a relegation. It’s a point of focus. Just like I would create a new off-topic thread if I wanted to get a focused discussion about what people are watching on Netflix. Or the way that I would create a new thread if I wanted to have a focused discussion on Torres’s reconstructed approach to hitting. The way it’s being suggested now is to create a place where we can have a specifically focused discussion on the night’s (or the previous night’s) game. It’s the same as any other off-topic movie/music/event or on-topic rosterbation/player interest/whathaveyou FanPost. Just replace “whathaveyou” with “last night’s game”.

The ironic thing about this post to me is that a great part of the charm of baseball is its “conversational pace” and in that context, the conversations that take place on the posts do seem to be a pretty direct virtual corollary to the conversations you hear around you at stadiums or sports bars during games.

Of course, that said, I almost never take part in the GDT or PGDT because they’re too big and unwieldy for me. So what do I know?

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A lot of times people who use “shift-A” bring up a point or mention some news that has already been mentioned before, often within a couple of posts above their own. A quick skimming of the thread would do wonders for cutting down on extra bloat.

If a thread is big, I’ll generally open it, clear the comments, and then read the new comments that come up. Interestingly enough, people are generally still talking about the stuff that I want to talk about, so the new comments lead me directly to the part of the thread I want to see.

I do it a lot, and I’m a lot less patient than the average person. I just did it in main thread today — I saw a subthread was headed into a discussion about vegans/vegetarians, which doesn’t interest me (my wife is a vegetarian and I get all I need of that at home), so i just held down the ‘z’ button until the subject changed, which I could see without really reading the comments from the way the thread is aligned.

Well then, GDTs are a completely different animal from the regular threads. Those are the hardest to control since the responses are more immediate and will likely never returned to after the game is over. For that reason, I’m generally a bit looser with what gets posted there.

I think I generally agree with you, BruteSentiment. I highly value many things about the community here, but oftentimes the sheer volume keeps me away.

In some ways, this is just a function of volume, period. I get weary of long, unrelated-to-my-interests OT discussions, but also long over-argued baseball discussions. I don’t really find the voluminous debates about marginal players all that exciting, usually. Some people do, of course, and everyone wants to be heard. When that everyone goes from a few hundred to a few thousands (or tens to hundreds, or whatever), it’s no surprise that a lot of stuff gets rehashed. I don’t think I mind there being off topic stuff or long, redundant on-topic arguments, but mining the gold from the dross is becoming an effort. Sometimes worth it, sometimes not.

I would definitely follow a more dedicated baseball thread. I don’t know how successful it would be long term. I’d like to see an effort, at least, whether Fanpost or main page.

It’s rare that I can keep up with a post-game thread, but I’ve come to appreciate the OT posts. Somehow they always lead back to Giants references, and that’s part of why people come here. When Johnny Disaster posted a picture of a homemade reuben sandwich, it was obvious that someone was going to make a Reuben Rivera/“And that looks like the worst sandwich in the history of cuisine!” reference. And if they didn’t, they should have.

This is a community where most of the time people talk about baseball, and if they don’t, they’re likely to start a topic that has a Dax Jones reference in it somewhere. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, but most of the time it works just fine.

I feel bad that you felt bad.

Nowadays we talk about lunch because that’s part of the deal here. Originally I participated in those discussion because it seemed like a better use of bandwidth than writing “LOL! Good point, Grant!” and then quoting the part that was the funniest or had the best Dungeons & Dragons reference in it.

The ironic thing is that we’d probably spend a lot more time discussing your opinions if they were crazier. Saying things that resemble what actually happened and staking out reasonable opinions on controversial subjects lends itself to having a contented user base happily making Kimothy Batiste jokes in the comments. By now, I hope that you take the OT of the site as a compliment, even though I understand some of the sentiment that Brute and MB are expressing.

That’s all of the nice things I’m going to write about you for the rest of the year, BTW.

Mark DeRosa is playing exactly the same amount of professional baseball as his adopted father, these days.

I don’t take offense at all any more, but there was a time where I was like, fuck, really? There was one thread where “Lunch?” was literally the first comment, and it was a post that was way more substantial than my typical mailed-in post.

Really, I think every post should have every one of my jokes singled out with an LOL by it. Even the ones that don’t make you LOL. Maybe those should have a LSTM.

I personally haven’t used it, but zephyr at Japers’ Rink wrote a script for greasemonkey that can ignore and favorite users, found here. So if anyone wants an ignore user function, there you go.

There’s also a hide comments without subject lines script, if that’s also a concern to people. But, like before, I haven’t tried it.

Maybe you were using the “Ignore Me” script.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I would love an "ignore user" feature

or ignore subthread. That would be absolutely golden.

PS, In my mind, your writing is still the primary reason I come here

I like the community / find it entertaining and I like all of us who’ve been part of this for 4/5 years / Waiting for Boof days, but its post-game threads or the random “choose your adventure” threads that make me genuinely LOL.

Funny, isn't it?

When I first started posting here, people would hijack bad (I mean, horribly BADDDDD) Fanposts with OT discussion as a sort of shutdown against the original author (who wrote a terrible piece, and thus deserved it? I think so, yeah). Now, OT is all over the front-page posts like never before. But I don’t really mind (very often anyway), so I just deal with it.

I’m definitely guilty of pretty much only adding to OT sub threads. TBH it is mostly because baseball topics have either:
A) Been covered a million times
or
B) My opinion has already been expressed more succinctly by some other McCoven than I would have said it anyway.

Somtimes both.
