The Morning After: Giants Magic Number Down to 3
I don't know about everyone else, but I'm starting to get nervous, not just the normal nervousness that comes from being a fan of the Giants and dealing with all the torture, but the nervousness that comes from being a Giants fan with hope. Lincecum gutted his way through 7 innings last night even though he had a cold and didn't have his best stuff, but only gave up 1 run, and the Giants on-again off-again offense got another go-ahead homerun from Pat Burrell. In other years, the Giants lose that game, maybe 1-0, or maybe it all unravels and they lose 7-0, but not this year; this year, they seem to win more of those games than they lose and that makes me kind of nervous.
So last night's game:
Buster Posey took another 0-fer, but has made some loud outs over the last few games including sending one to the wall in right that's out of most parks, is there any cause for concern?
Pablo Sandoval had another hit, and it was on a breaking ball that looked to be out of the zone, should Bochy stick with him instead of Fontenot?
Jose Guillen looked awful at the plate, flailing away at a breaking balls out of the zone, any chance Bochy ever decides to sit his grizzly, gamery veteran ass in favor of Ross for the rest of the way?
How awesome is Timmeh, and how much does the fact that he's going to lead the league for the 3rd year in a row in SO's foretell of things to come?
Has Mat Latos replaced Alex Rodriguez as the whiniest player in baseball?
Talk amongst yourselves.

Posey: It’s not like he’s flailing. Just unlucky. That’s just how baseball works, and once one falls in, it will seem like they all fall in. He will get scorchingly hot in October. Mark my words.

I think you’re right, but I hope that Posey doesn’t start to press because he’s frustrated. I guess I’m just nervous, everyone should buy stock in Pepto Bismol.

Not too worried about Posey pressing
He seems to have gotten an icewater transfusion, probably at the same clinic that did Matt Cain’s.

RE Pablo last night
Keep in mind in the 8-hole, a hitter should expand the zone with the P up next. Who better to expand a strike zone?
From that perspective definitely, but is he just stringing together a good game or two, or is he and his awful defense a better option than Fontenot? I think at this point it’s probably day to day, although if he could bounce back now that would be awesome.

Hey @#%^$^ Latos:
Last time I checked, the GM and Manager are part of the team. If they decide to keep a roster fluid instead of drawing a line in the sand and bury their heads down there with it, then it’s to the team’s credit for adding players. What a nunce.
Mat Latos
May indeed suck it!

No, he's right
I mean, come on, how many players from the 2002 WS team are still here? None? Come ON! Even from 2007, we’ve only got like five. What the hell, Giants? Why do you replace players instead of just keeping them forever? Even the bad ones would probably have liked to stay! So inconsiderate and stupid.
Ain't no Posey like a Buster Posey cause a Buster Posey don't stop...hitting.
Giants baseball: We're stupid enough to do that (TM)
Hey Mat Latos,
Can’t wait to face you this weekend. What’s your ERA this month—7?
Love,
Giants

it's too bad
that Buster hasn’t been able to get a little more rest. There were a few games in the past few weeks in which we either took a big lead and I would have lifted Posey right away. Bork eventually took him out, but not as soon as I would have. Luckily we’ve had the past 3 Mondays off, but I still think the kid’s probably pretty tired.
Guillen should go to the bench and never come back. He’s not contributing on offense (except that game 2 sundays ago) and he is a liability in RF. Give Nate or Ross all the starts the rest of the way.
If you don't like Brandon Medders you're not a true fan.

I changed that second sentence in the middle of writing it (just ignore the “either”)

Something i did not expect to post this season
I agree, Bochy should have sat Posey a bit more.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

Guillen should go to the bench and never come back.
I totally support this plan.

He’s a 22 year old kid, frustrated because a magical season went sour. I’d cut him some slack.

Except
That Mat Latos can suck it, and his “magic” has cost the Giants a few games in the win column. Whiny little bitch, is a whiny little bitch once you pass about 16.

It’s not like the Giants are going out and attracting every top free agent available (like certain East Coast clubs). It’s a lot of spare parts that got picked up for cheap. Latos is definitely just being whiny, but I’m sure he’s more than a little frustrated.
And did I hear that Adrian Gonzalez seriously said he wants to play for the Cubs next year? WTF?
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
WTF is right.
Especially in the middle of a pennant race, if I’m a GM with another club that was considering going after him, his stock just went way down in my book.

And it’s not like the Cubs have a history of being a model franchise, or have a history of really pushing for the World Series. Crazy!

But man, Gonzalez outside the NL West might put up video game numbers.

Before the season, I was really irritated that Molina and Franchez were re-signed, and Huff and DeRosa were brought onboard, and we were just looking like an older and older team yet again. I didn’t like the signings because it was all indicative of the same strategy of filling the team with old, not-that-good players.
When this season began, I was pissed that Bowker saw his playing time reduced because Andres Torres was better defensively and had a pretty decent season last year, albeit in a a limited fashion.
When the Giants signed Pat Burrell, I argued that he shouldn’t be starting over Nate Schierholtz. But I did like the idea of them both starting over Aaron Rowand.
I was concerned about bringing Madison Bumgarner up this year, I suspected he wasn’t going to prove ready.
I didn’t like the trades for Ramirez or Lopez, primarily because I thought our bullpen was fine and these guys weren’t really likely to help the club down the stretch.
I’m starting to think I just don’t know baseball as well as I think I do. So maybe I should take some time off from complaining about the Giants for a while here. I think I’m going to go back to trying to trust that maybe Sabes and company have more of a clue than I often think they do.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

There’s enough counterpoints above to counter the reasons I’ve been wrong. Like Huff and DeRosa, and even my thinking that Schierholtz should remain ahead of Burrell on the depth chart.
Ultimately, it all speaks to that I’m really not as baseball savvy as I’d like to sometimes think I am!
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Jose Guillen.

I obviously didn’t like the move either, and even in hindsight it was a bad move… But the Giants are in the driver’s seat. I’m done complaining about the Giants right now.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Aaron Rowand, Todd Walkameyer, Edgar Renteria, Jose Guillen and Barry Zito, but those are just the dumbass moves that affected this year’s team.

Yeah… But here we are at the end of the season, hoping to hold on to first place and make the playoffs for the first time since 2003. I’m excited for the first time since 2003 (and that include when we were pushing for the playoffs in 2004, but I thought our team sucked too much to want them to make it).
I’m in for the season, and am probably just going to have to watch how things unfold for next year, without complaining too much about it.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
I agree with everything you said in your original post.
People should stop with the bitchin’ and enjoy this shit.
Well, to be fair
you were right about Molina and DeRosa, at least.

I too fell into the same trap. At the beginning of the year it looked to be the standard Brian Sabean plan. I thought that the Giants might get lucky, that the stellar pitching would save us from total failure, and that the Giants would finish somewhere in the middle of the pack. Like an drug addict I waited for them to provide enough to take the edge off my Giants addiction, but not that great high I was looking for.
It’s the end of September and I was wrong. While this season has been the very definition of tortuous, I am finding the faith to fully embrace my addiction. I am a Giants Fan, Game on.
Adopted Son: !Matt Downs I'll miss you my son.
I’m pretty sure the Giants only need to win 2 to clinch.
Scenario 1: We win tonight against the d-backs, meaning we come in to the Padres series with at least a 2 game advantage, meaning the Padres would have to sweep us to win the division.
Scenario 2: We lose tonight and the Padres win. We go into the Padres series 1 up, meaning we have to win 2/3 to clinch.
Either way we only need 2 wins out of the remaining 4 games.
Magic Numbers
A team’s magic numbers is the total number of wins by said team and/or losses by the team trailing it needs to clinch a postseason birth or title. So you are correct that the Giants only need 2 wins, but since one of those wins would have to come against the Padres their Magic Number remains at 3 because for the Giants to get 2 wins one would have to come against the Padres and hence the Padres would have to lose which still adds up to 3 Giants wins and/or Padres losses.
Also, if the Giants win this afternoon and the Padres lose tonight, the Giants would clinch at least a tie for the NL West.

Yup
The big thing about a Giants win/Padres loss today would be that it would make it impossible for the Pads to eliminate us with a sweep this weekend.
Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!
This
Would help with some of the random nausea I’ve been experiencing. Plus I’m downright scared of a scenario in which the Padres and their black magic could eliminate the Giants by sweeping a 3 game series.

Go Giants!
I’m an east coast boy pulling for the Giants all the way.
- to beat the Padres, because I hate San Deego.
- to crush the Phillies any which way they can because there is nothing whatsoever I like about the Philthies and their detestable fan base.
- just because I can!
That is all.

Yeah, when you start lines with # it tries to generate numbered lists. I guess your spacing made it think it should start a new list each time. It’s really unfortunate; it messes people up all the time.
