We've been discussing the possibility for a while, and now it looks like it's likely to happen. 

Goofus' bold idea: If Pablo is going to be a bench player, would making him the backup catcher (instead of Whiteside) be a good idea if/when it comes to determining post-season rosters?  It would allow them to carry a better bat or extra arm.

Pablo Sandoval could be a bench player for the rest of the season. Bochy met with the struggling third baseman, who is hitting .195 with runners in scoring position and hasn't been bringing his balanced swing from batting practice to games.

Bochy said he will look to start Edgar Renteria at shortstop and move Juan Uribe to third base in Colorado this weekend if Renteria's elbow improves. Mike Fontenot started at third base Thursday.

"We still believe in this guy," Bochy said of Sandoval. "He's his own worst enemy. He gets himself out, and he knows it."
