It’d be nice to have another high profile arm in the system. We wouldn’t lose a draft pick by signing him, would we?

the article is vague on that matter, only saying that the DBacks get comp picks. Interest in this guy would be quite limited if the signing team had to give up a first rounder to get him, so probably that’s not the case.

and what it sounds like, is that the DBacks get a comp pick for not signing their 1st rounder with a comparable 1st rounder (7th) in 2011, just as when any team doesn’t sign their 1st rounder. the signing team doesn’t give up a pick in that case. However, because he was technically signed but failed the physical and the contract was voided, the commish had to make a ruling that they get their comp pick.

I really want this guy. He was an overdraft last year, but he’s still a first-round talent and this org is quite good with them peetchurs. Considering our pitching depth right now is Wheeler, Bucardo, and Surkamp, none of whom are sure things, it’d be nice to buy another lottery ticket.

I like Loux also, but I have a feeling that now that he can negotiate with any team that the bidding war will price him beyond what I’d want to pay for him. I wouldn’t go over $800K to sign him now due to the medical issues with the shoulder (prior to the draft I had only heard about an elbow issue).
One more thing.
…our pitching depth right now is Wheeler, Bucardo, and Surkamp, none of whom are sure things, …
First off, there’s no minor league pitcher that’s a sure thing, but I get you’re point that those 3 aren’t close to being major league-ready right now. Secondly, while I agree that our minor league starting pitching depth is below-average now, I think that at least 3 of the 2010 signees belong somewhere on that list – specifically I’m referring to Mike Kickham, Seth Rosin and Brandon Allen. And let’s not forget Mike Main and Reiner Roibal while we’re at it.
