Recent bannings and warnings

Everyone,

Unfortunately, we've had a recent spike in the need to warn and ban people.   Taking care of trolls and new folks who don't understand that we treat McC as a community and not an anonymous message board where insults are acceptable is nothing new, but some of the problems have involved long-time members.

It's probably a good time to remind everyone of the rules we all agreed to when we signed up at McC:
No personal attacks and no racist, sexist or homophobic attacks/remarks.

Unless it's an obvious troll or complete idiot, we almost always warn people before banning them.  None of us take pleasure in banning people from the site, but when people become more of distraction tham they're contributing, it's time for them to go.

I think we all appreciate what an awesome place Grant and all the McCoven have created here, so let's keep being excellent to each other.

Cheers,

Goofus

A question:

That hokeysmokes fella – or lady – whichever, posted some generally unfunny and frequently irrelevant garbage which was almost always ingored. But where is the line between unfunny/idiotic and “troll?” Is a troll someone who posts on blogs just to disrupt the harmony of a discussion?

GRM was a complete jackhole

But he’s been a complete jackhole around here for years. I’d imagine if someone was just looking for a reason to ban him, it would have happened a long time ago.

Same with hokysmokes – although I think he was a pure troll, while GRM was more arrogant, inane and impossible to actually engage in an honest exchange of opinion.

Vic wrote me an email not too long ago.

He basically said that he thought some mods and regulars were being dicks to people (specifically regarding grammar and stats) so he created a different account to sort of pose as “the new guy.” Apparently jponry called him on it (because mods can look up your ip address) but he didn’t go into detail.

He ended by saying that “he gave them what they wanted.” I assume that was the post directed at Goofus in the “Baseball and Sexuality” thread. Then he added that he showed up to the meet up like the next day or so since he already had tickets to the game.

For the record I always liked Vic and I hope he doesn’t mind me posting this but I thought since he can’t post here maybe it would reflect his side of the story.

There was one similar photoshop with pictures of you, me, Grant and Goofus that he sent me. There were no heads on plates in that one, but he drew Dodgers gear onto Goofus.

I got two, too. I’m a cocksucker.

I guess there’s no getting around the suggestions anymore. I think most people reading the current conversation can piece together the story by now.

Vic made himself a huge distraction on the website, but he simultaneously made himself a huge distraction using other avenues. He would disagree with me when I say that he was (and occasionally still is) harassing Grant, jponry, Natto, and myself by e-mail. But the e-mails were very real, and the sense of great unease that they struck in all of us was just as real.

That’s the short, but accurate, version.

"I just struck out looking three times, but in any other ballpark those would have been home runs." - Aubrey Huff

by howtheyscored on Sep 3, 2010 11:03 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s also worth mentioning that he was making it very clear to us that he no longer enjoyed being a part of McCovey Chronicles, whether because of how we were modding or how GDT activity was and he was quite vocal about it, both on the site and over email, to the point where he was distracting far more than he was contributing. And howie mentioning the “unease” is important – it’s not just that he was distracting, he was genuinely making me (and the others, I think) uncomfortable, both on and off site. And he continues to do so.

He didn’t want to be here anymore. He told us all that multiple times, but said that he couldn’t leave for whatever reason. He wasn’t able to keep his distaste below the surface while posting and it became disruptive. A lot of people have said they liked victor frankenstein… so did I. But his behavior shifted at some point around the sexuality thread to the point where, I’ll be honest – I do not like him anymore.

In a weird way, I understand what he's trying to do.

I imagine it’s like being in a certain social circle, say in high school, and rather popular in said group, but suddenly excluded for whatever reason. You try and try to get back in, but everything you do fails to work, and you find yourself worse off then you would have been doing nothing.

People do that kind of thing. I don’t support it, I know it’s wrong, but I do understand. I’ve made similar mistakes, though I was a teenager at the time and making mistakes was pretty much all I did.

As for liking him and then not…. Such is life. People don’t always remain what you want them to be.

For the record, I knew that snakewhatever was vic from post number one.

I'll add this:

I got one of the emails from him as well, and while I agree with most of the comments said in this sub-thread (particularly the disturbing photoshop)…I do understand his problem with the GameDay Threads. They are getting ridiculously huge with a lot of comments that don’t even deserve the bother of a shift-A, not to mention an increasing level of vulgarity that makes it something I don’t feel comfortable reading even in private situations.

And because of this, there’s something rather particular that I do…

I don’t go in them anymore.

That’s all it takes. There’s more than enough content on this site to enjoy. I hate the GDT’s anymore, unless I have a bit of news to break, like the Villalona news last season. But no complaining, no whining. Just don’t use ’em anymore.

But creepy photoshop creeps me out. Seriously…I’m sorry any of the mods have to deal with this. This goes way beyond any of the behavior I’ve had to deal with when I’ve modded in the past, even with some grudges still held. This is way out of line for the guy to be doing.

I’m not sure if Goofus’ post is explicitly related to this or not, but it’s worth reminding folks (both newcomers and long-time contributors):

If someone has a baseball/Giants-related observation or opinion that you disagree with, by all means, reply and state your case about why you think the person is wrong. But there’s no need to call them a dick or an asshole in the process. I think we’re all able to handle constructive criticism, but if you don’t call people names in person, you shouldn’t do it virtually, either.

An easy rule of thumb is just treat discussions as though we’re all on the same room in real life.

That’s one of the things that I really like about McC as opposed to most internet forums I’ve seen. It’s really more of a real conversation (complete with awesome digressions) among friends than people just bloviating their own opinions.
