OK, I couldn't figure out how to make this a video FanShot, so you'll have to click the link. This was from last night's Marlins vs. Nationals game. Nyjer Morgan charges the mound against Chris Volstad (in itself an unwise move). But the best part of the fight is when 1B Gaby Sanchez joins in the fight. Morgan gets in one punch, then WHAM!

LOL at ESPN. Stealing bases when you are down by 10 is bad form?

I really don’t get that. I understand that Morgan ran into the catcher perhaps unnecessarily the day before, but stealing down by 10 doesn’t seem to violate any rules to me.

Right,

Stealing 2 bases when you’re up by 10, I get… but not down by 10. Volstad has to deal with the consequences of putting on a baserunner. If he can’t deal with it, he shouldn’t pursue in-game retaliation. (I can’t believe I just defended Morgan).

That said, Gabby Sanchez is surely the envy of the league.

This makes no sense to me either. Are you supposed to give up and stop trying to score runs?

Those crazy “unwritten rules” again (the game ended 15-10). However, I have to say, something is going on with Nyjer Morgan (other than sucking as a player I mean). In just over a week now he has: 1) thrown a ball into the stands that struck and injured a fan, apparently intentionally, (although it now appears he won’t be prosecuted for it); 2) intentionally plowed through a catcher who wasn’t looking at him when no play was being made at the plate to throw him out; and 3) now started a pretty ugly donnybrook by charging the mound on a pitch that didn’t hit him.

Before August he had no history of this kind of stuff at all, and now it’s turning into a nightly affair with him. Something bad seems to be going on in Nyjer’s head suddenly.

I always hated the unwritten rules about scoring more runs or padding a lead. Baseball is the one sport where no matter the score you always have time to come back and win.

I go both ways on it. I can see not running up the score for sportsmanship reasons. That said, I think any professional athlete complaining about it is a bitch – you’re being paid big bucks to stop them from doing that, it’s your own fault for not doing your job. The ridiculous thing about this situation is they criticized the team that was losing for stealing bases. That just makes no sense….

by Missing Barry on Sep 2, 2010 7:23 AM PDT up reply actions

HOW DARE THE LOSING TEAM TRY TO SCORE RUNS!!!!!!!!!!!

I think team up by 11 can feel pretty safe, but look at the games last week. On the same day both the Braves and Red where up 10-1 and both ended up giving up that whole lead. So yeah. Football and basketball are different. If you have a 5 touchdown lead and you are still passing for TD’s in the final 5 minutes you are an asshole coach (for lots of reasons not just sportsmanship). Same goes for basketball.

Probably, though with regards to that first thing, I’m pretty sure he intentionally threw the ball in the stands but did not think it would wind up hurting someone. He’s probably really frustrated since he’s having such a terrible season.

I watched it live, it was awesome. Gaby Sanchez is one of my new favorite players. I dunno what highlight you guys get, but the view from the first base line is the best – full out clothesline. Just decked Nyjer. Fucking awesome.

Two notes: If you think Nyjer was charging the mound for a pitch that didn’t hit him, then you don’t have the full context. He was hit by a pitch in an earlier at bat that game without reacting, so he was clearly taking issue with being thrown at for a second time. Also, I was at the game against the Cardinals where he went after the catcher. Just a BS move.

by Missing Barry on Sep 2, 2010 7:22 AM PDT reply actions

(Nyjer was hit the first time for injuring the Marlins C on a play at the plate the night before, by the way)

by Missing Barry on Sep 2, 2010 8:29 AM PDT up reply actions

Which is bullshit. That play was bad and unfortunate but not intentional. It was awkward, the catcher might have been able to tagged if he slid, or maybe not. I would be pissed to if I was Morgan.

Yeah, I keep hearing that he bowled people over, but I haven’t seen the plays. If there was a catcher in the basepath or blocking the plate, I’d think you should knock them down. Catchers & infielders deke all the time, not moving the receive a throw until the very last second.

Against the Cardinals, it was a dirty, dirty play. Basically, there was no play at the plate, and Nyjer went out of his way to run into the catcher – so out of his way, he missed the plate entirely, and eded up being called out on interference because he had, you know, missed the plate to run into the catcher, who was not making an attempt to tag him instead.

by Missing Barry on Sep 2, 2010 2:38 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, that play was ugly. The play against the Marlins wasn’t that bad I think. He didn’t try to take out the catcher’s legs or anything. Probably should have slid, and I get throwing at him, but not so big a deal that he needed to be thrown at twice.

I think the famous “unwritten baseball etiquette” is that you go head and shoulders down into a catcher like a fullback busting through a linebacker…Not elbow to the head like someone trying to end the catcher’s season with broken jaw or face. Just my thoughts on why they were so upset

by m34josh on Sep 3, 2010 4:51 AM PDT up reply actions

That may be a good point. I’d have to look back at the play to say much about it.

Plus, it bears repeating, he’s had a horrifically bad year in every respect — his offense has been terrible, his defense has been terrible, his base running has been terrible. And I’m talking the Nats could upgrade CF by trading for Eugenio Velez kind of terrible. This is a guy whose major league future has got to be in some doubt simply from a productivity standpoint, and this kind of stuff isn’t going to make teams want him more. His agent should sit him down for a Come to Jesus discussion pretty soon IMO if he cares about his future.

I was always under the impression that throwing at someone was ok if they steal a base when leading by 10 runs. What’s wrong with him trying to create offense and maybe help his team make a run? Plus they already hit him for knocking out their catcher the day before so the whole thing should have just ended there in my opinion.

Yep, especially after the Nats chose not to retaliate for it.

Not saying its right at all, but I think they viewed the base stealing as retaliation. Like you and others have said, its ridiculous to be angry at him for not just taking the beanball and staying put at 1B because his team is down big.

He didn’t exactly ‘just’ slide into either bag though. He slid through the bags hoping his helmet would go through the fielders catching the ball. Busting knees and ankles is one thing, but doing them in a game down double digits is another

by m34josh on Sep 3, 2010 4:55 AM PDT up reply actions

1) The collision at the plate was clean, hard baseball
2) The retaliation the next day was expected, although not entirely warranted
3) Stealing bases while down that much is not the best way to get back in the game. You need baserunners. An extra base wasn’t going to help them. It was obvious he did it for selfish reasons, but they weren’t entirely unwarranted.
4) The second beaning is kinda iffy. You don’t want runners stealing bases? Don’t put them on. Don’t put them on intentionally. It bothers me that most of the headlines read “Morgan instigates brawl”. Really? You throw intentionally at a guy twice and expect him to turn his cheek? Did the Marlins turn their cheek when he swiped some questionable bases? The Marlins instigated the brawl.

The catcher was standing over the plate. By the time Morgan has to make his decision he doesn’t know whether the catcher will have the ball or not. The catcher shouldn’t be in the baseline until he has that ball.

After reviewing the play, I have to admit it’s not as dirty as his other collision play… but it was still a bullshit play which cost the Nats a run. It was in no way necessary – Morgan got himself out by running into the catcher (who did have the ball). A good slide scores.

Stealing bases while down that much is not the best way to get back in the game.

This is arguable. It was still the 6th inning, even scoring one run that inning would help. And being down by 10 runs seems like a good time to start taking some risks.

I agree with the rest of your post though.
