Randy fucking Wolf. Really?

by Dan from NM on Sep 17, 2010 9:48 PM PDT reply actions

Don't forget . . .

. . . that Rick Peterson is his pitching coach. Wolf was once pretty good, and Peterson is a whiz at extracting maximum performance.

As a sidebar, I wonder who the greatest—meaning most effective, not best-known—pitching coaches, at least of modern times, have been. Peterson and Mazzoni are the only names that pop to mind.

Whether Duncan, like Art Fowler in his (and Billy Martin’s) day, relies on, um, extras, I don’t know; but he does seem to get results.

Little Red Riding Hood??

The Giants seemed to be so petrified of the big bad below .500 Wolf their fielding imploded and they couldn’t get but 3 hits off him and 2 of them came in one inning but were quickly snuffed out by a bunt DP. Nothing went right for them all night as they were embarrassed in more ways than one. They have to regroup and get back in line but on the positive side they did manage to hold on to their 1st place lead while SD was clobbered by Albert Pujols & his wrecking crew but they failed to go further ahead in the standings. . Tim Lincecum’s on the mound tomorrow for them so that’s a huge plus.

I don’t hate him per say, I hate the reasoning for him being out there everyday and pretty much what he symbolizes. He symbolizes a team that thinks veterans who “Still have something left in the bat” should be playing, when all signs point to, Jose Guillen is not very good anymore. Someone who is a huge liability defensively in one of the harder RFs in baseball should not be an every day player. Its painful to watch him run and anyone else on this team would have gotten the double instead of a long single.

But WTF Kruk said:

So is Cain still going through that period?

WTF kind of bullshit comment is that? Earning the offense scoring runs for you?

I don’t even know where to begin with the utter asininity of that comment.

I see, Mike. With a rookie pitcher batters stand in thinking, “You know, that puppy on the mound hasn’t really earned any offense yet. I think I’ll just pop up weakly here.”

Put the vodka down, Krukow.

I feel like if this team had one "true star" player the Giants

would avoid many games like this. I mean look they were complete trash tonight and it was still a relatively close game. One big name position player and the Giants would be well into first place by now.

Buster Posey may very well be that guy, just imagine if he started by day one. The G men would have at least 2 extra wins.

Well offense, we're up against Gallardo tomorrow and TBA on Sunday.

Gallardo has had two very good starts in a row, after getting shelled for the month of August. Still he’s their best and has pitched better on the road. The bright side is that he’s been terrible in his career at Mays (2 whole starts), so we’ve got that going for us. Which is nice.

TBA has had a dominant history against the Giants. We’re going to need some Providence on our side.

Why Mota???

What the fuck is Bochy thinking bringing this stiff into a close game, when he has a September bullpen filled with pitchers? I know they would have lost anyway, but 2-0 and 3-0 are huge differences. A walk is a rally against a pitcher who has allowed 27 homeruns when it’s only a two run game. It ain’t May, Bochy, everything is on the line with every pitch.
This brings me to Mike Krukow. I love Kruk, but his homerism can drive me crazy. When Mota’s first pitch was a strike, Krukow said, “Mota picks up right where he left off.” No, Mike. “Where he left off” was six consecutive relief appearances where he was scored upon, which made them put him on the DL with a bullshit injury to begin with. Now it’s seven. Mota sucks, the manager shouldn’t have put him into an important game, and if Krukow doesn’t want to say that, he should just shut up and look for somebody in a Brewer hat to eliminate.

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees.

Just had to jump in

And say that game was really, really lame.

by paboperfecto on Sep 18, 2010 11:39 AM PDT reply actions

Lets face it, last night we were complete game shutout by OPIE of Mayberry.

The hitters had a terrible approach, I mean a chance to extend their lead with
series vs the Rocks and the Friars coming up, and the batters did literally take
the night off, rookies and veterans alike. I can see why Bumgarner gives up
a lot of hits and not a lot of runs. I think half the hits this guy has given up are of
the infield variety. The giants fielding last night was worse than the hitting.
At least 2 if not more of the Brewsky’s hits could have been errors.
Renteria on the so called Wolf single, and the dropped pop-up, albeit over
the shoulder by Uribe. Both of those plays should have been made without
undue effort. The double play not turned by a bad throw by Sanchez, of course
is not an error by some stupid rule that you cannot assume a DP, but had the
throw been good the batter would have been out by 2 or 3 steps so what is the
assumption. Sanchez had gone 70 games without an error, but earlier in the
season he dropped a throw on a play, which was first credited as his error, and
then later changed to an error on the throw. I think the first assessment was
more correct.

by bradleybear on Sep 18, 2010 11:57 AM PDT reply actions

Not quite fair.

The ball to Renteria had wicked spin, and jerked to his right unexpectedly—that’s why it was scored a hit. The popup Uribe dropped was a rather shallow one and he was running hard just to get to its vicinity, and it was, as noted, with his back to it. Each of those, if made, would have been a web gem; the scorer was right on each.

The double play: that rule about the scorer never assuming a DP has been driving me nuts for almost a third of a century. It is toxically stupid.

Sidebar thought: I have been, for almost that long, in favor of a new scoring category, for which I suggest the name “Fluke”. A Fluke would be scored instead of an Error when both the pitcher and the fielders did their job but something happened anyway. That would include things like outfield throws that hit the runner, balls that hit sprinkler heads, weird hops that no one can be expected to field, and so on. It is ridiculous to penalize a fielder who did everything that could reasonably be expected of him, yet had blind chance intervene; yet, to avoid doing so, the scorer would (as things are now) have to instead penalize the pitcher who also did his job properly. The Fluke (which I think a better idea than the so-called “team error”) would cover such cases.

I like this.

And as with and well defined category team, or player, with “flukes” well over a standard devotion or two would stand out as well. The worst thing I case I can of is if certain teams think they can hide a players errors in that category and thus improve their other defensive measures and lobby more gold gloves. (Now there is an award that should be dragged out of the pre space race age and the criteria updated.)

Official scorers . . .

. . . are not controlled by the team: they are members of the BBWAA, independent journalists employed by MLB, not the team. It is said that in some markets, the teams apply subtle pressures, but I have my doubts. It is the case, however, that because scoring can be at times controversial, most major papers now forbid their staff from being scorers, which is why most scorers are from relatively minor local publications.

Thanks. I had no idea that most major papers forbid thier stafff from being scorers. That little gem strikes me as so sad that I can’t even find the words.

And I didn’t mean to disparage the group as a whole just thinking their would be managment groups I could easliy see linning up pressures to “nudge” things. Sometimes my critic cymism is a little too healthy, alas for my naive youth.

Never seen a power streak like this from him, but I don’t think there’s any reason to call shenanigans other than the fact that 9 or 10 of those homers are Coors homers.

I've never seen his control as good as it was against the giants on tuesday

I really hope he brings that into his next start and treats the rockies as if he’s facing the first pitch out prone giants.

Beating the Dodgers these days isn't too hard

except for the Giants. The Padres swept them at the Latrine and now the Rockies are doing the same. It is sad that the Giants almost lost 2 to them at home.

It is always hard to tell if you had a good game pitched against you or whether your bats are just cold. I think after watching pitcher after pitcher make the Giants offense look silly, that it is beginning to be very clear that it is the latter.
