Overflow Virtual Tie for First Place Party Thread

Let's talk about things.

What do you think Andres Torres's injury means for the Giants? What do you think the lineup will be on Tuesday?

Can Barry Zito step it up, seeing how the other four members of the rotation are performing of late?

Do you ever worry that they will suddenly decide that we don't deserve Buster Posey after all and will take him away from us?

On a scale from 1-10, how satisfying was Mat Latos's less than quality start?

Or, you know, just spam the thread with OT comments like usual.

What do you think Andres Torres’s injury means for the Giants? What do you think the lineup will be on Tuesday?

This obviously hurts. But, if it is indeed Scott rather than Ross that gets most of the innings in CF, I think he’ll do a good job. Clearly his numbers and general Scott-ness say otherwise, but I think he’ll surprise us.

Can Barry Zito step it up, seeing how the other four members of the rotation are performing of late?

Zito isn’t going to let us down.

Do you ever worry that they will suddenly decide that we don’t deserve Buster Posey after all and will take him away from us?

Yes. 2002 has left me emotionally scarred and I believe that any rational cause happiness will eventually be taken away from me. This is kind of why I think those who are most likely to disappoint us (Scott, Zito) will paradoxically be the ones to come through when needed.

On a scale from 1-10, how satisfying was Mat Latos’s less than quality start?

We need to win

If we’re winning, I think I root for the Padres – because this series is at coors, and the rockies home/road splits are such that they really can’t afford to lose at coors.

by dregarx on Sep 12, 2010 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

im gonna root for COL tomorrow, just so we have sole possession of first for a day (that’s for my ego). The other days, I don’t care.

But here’s where it gets interesting. The Rockies go out on the road, so they could fall back quick… or keep on winning. The Pads could go back to early-season form at any time, too, so these are the two most unpredictable teams to say who to root for. All I know is, i want to see us alone in first for one day.

Just about to post this!

The Giants could have to choose between Burrell and Huff. Maybe they let Burrell walk. Thing is, you might be able to make Burrell a 1B, too, so either way you have an OF/1B situation, and then you throw Belt into that mix…?

DeJesus + Torres is already a powerless lineup (well, Torres has some pop this year, don’t know that he hits 14 next year, but I am fine with being wrong on that). I don’t know where the additions and subtractions happen, but I really just want the Giants’ frankenroster to do something this year so the problem(s) don’t seem quite so magnified.

by Every6thDay on Sep 12, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

DeJesus + Torres is already a powerless lineup

It doesn’t really matter how you provide your offensive value as long as you provide it.

DeJesus and Torres do well enough in all the other categories of hitting and defense that lack of power is not a criterion by which to preclude their both being in the starting lineup.

by giant4life83 on Sep 13, 2010 12:24 AM PDT up reply actions

This is true to a certain extent. However the run values assigned to singles, doubles, etc. based on the average lineup. If you have say a bunch of guys with .400 OBP with no power then the actual runs they would produce would likely be lower than their numbers would predict.

Of course, no lineup is like that and only two players like that in the lineup (neither being exactly “powerless” as well) won’t create that scenario.

Uribe is, I believe, 31 now. His offense value is mediocre for a third baseman, but pretty good for a middle infielder—roughly Renteria/FSanchez range, which matches or slightly exceeds all but the half-dozen or so superstars at each middle-infield position.

Unless for mind-numbing dollars, Uribe is an excellent re-up.

Albatross contract?

Jayson Werth is a good player.

I know that, because he has been a good player for the past three years.

He has a great combination of skills – some of which age well, some of which age less well. He hits for average, for power, takes a lot of walks, covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and has a great arm.

He will be 32 years old when 2011 season starts.

Crawford is probably a slightly better player, perhaps. But Werth will get less money and less years.

All signs point to Jayson Werth being an above-average baseball player for the next four years.

And he’ll most likely be far above average for at least the next two.

This is what happens when people just listen to BS and don’t actually check facts.

Here are his home road splits over the past 4 years:

2007

Road OPS: .890

2008
Home OPS: .835
Road OPS: .887

2009
Home OPS: .902
Road OPS: .857

2010
Home OPS: .972
Road OPS: .808

Look at that – for two seasons he hit better at home than on the road, and for two he hit better on the road.

It’s almost as if JAYSON WERTH IS ACTUALLY JUST A REALLY GOOD HITTER IN ANY BALLPARK.

You are so very wrong

http://blogs.delawareonline.com/philledin/2010/09/09/is-werth-worth-the-money/

This shouldn’t be too hard to find some basic evidence for, since for so much of this season, the Phillies have filled out lineup cards that didn’t include Chase Utley or Ryan Howard.

So, for 2010, here are Werth’s numbers when Howard isn’t in the starting lineup:

.341 average, .438 OBP, .585 slugging with 8 RBI and 16 runs scored in 21 games.

And here are his numbers with Utley missing:

.313/.377/.482 with 31 RBI and 46 runs scored in 46 games.

And, for good measure, here’s what his numbers look like when both players aren’t in the lineup:

.377/.431/.547 with 10 RBI and 12 runs scored in 13 games.

Pretty much across the board, Werth has not only held his own without the two big sluggers batting in front of him, but in fact he’s played better when he was the centerpiece of the offense.

It is absolutely mindboggling to me how much hate Werth gets around the league and in the media – I do not understand why people spend so much time trying to turn a very good player into something else.

Well OK

But I would just say that

Werth is not a fluke player – ever since he started playing everyday, he has been very good.

There’s really nothing more that Werth could do to prove he’s worthy of a 4-5 year deal.

Your doubts are valid – but again, this is an argument that someone can use against signing any FA. Werth has aged well so far, there isn’t any reason to believe he’ll fall off a cliff.

by GiantPain on Sep 12, 2010 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

A lot of this is circumstance talking. I like Werth a lot, don’t get me wrong, but if you look down the road you have these contract issues looming:

Lincecum up for arbitration again after 2011.
Cain is a free agent after 2012.
J. Sanchez is a free agent after 2012.
Sandoval enters arbitration in 2012.
Posey enters arbitration in 2012 or 2013.
Bumgarner enters arbitration in 2013.

We’ll still be paying Rowand through 2012, and we’ll be paying Zito $20 million in 2013, plus deferred money after that.

If we sign Werth to a 4/60 kind of contract, where is all this money going to come from? I’d rather focus on developing our young core until we are less handcuffed by Zito and Rowand, so we have enough money to actually keep all these pieces here.

Our young core is great

But they don’t play all 9 positions on the field.

I agree, at present payroll, we wouldn’t be able to afford to keep all those players and sign Werth, so payroll must expand.

But these payroll discussion are things that happen in the front office – none of us have any idea how much money would be available.

Neukom has always said that payroll could expand for an impact player.

My only point is that Jayson Werth is very likely to be worth every penny he is paid, and that he would make any team that signed him better. Anything beyond that, I can’t really control.

by GiantPain on Sep 12, 2010 11:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Our payroll is at $96 million, according to Cot’s, and as I understand it we’re right at about the limits of what we are willing to spend at the current time.

Coming off the books this year are Renteria ($10), Huff ($3), and Uribe ($3), but some of that money is presumably going to go to resigning Huff and/or Uribe, and Torres is entering his first arbitration year.

If you want to sign Werth and make immediate room for him, you don’t resign Huff, make Belt or Sandoval your starting 1B, put either Fontenot at short or trade for an affordable one, don’t tender Cody Ross a contract, and either resign Burrell on the cheap or not at all and have DeRosa or Schierholtz play left field.

In short, I don’t think we can have Huff and Werth unless Huff signs a team friendly deal. And the marginal value of Werth over Huff is questionable.

by Solidarity on Sep 12, 2010 11:16 PM PDT up reply actions

Make no mistake

I understand that we can’t afford to sign Werth if payroll stays the same.

I was arguing one thing: If we were to expand payroll and we were looking for a player who would likely provide value commensurate to the contract they’re given, Jayson Werth would be a good signing.

I can certainly agree with you on that. I wouldn’t give him more than 4 years, as there aren’t many 35 year-old ballplayers whose value ends in “-teen,” but in terms of expanding payroll to make an immediate impact, Werth is a fine choice.

As far as you are going yes, but you need to release signing his just repeating the Rowand signing all over again. If the team is shelling out more than $5MM per WAR at a corner OF spot if better be for a guy that is more than 2.5 WAR for each season here. At his age Werth would have to have a monster first 1-2 seasons to make it worth the likely price. I don’t like those odds. There are much better odds in seeing if the younger Ross bounces back towards ‘08 or ’’09 form. And Ross should be cheaper in ’11 as well.

Say it with me, everyone

Jayson Werth is much much much better than Aaron Rowand.

Rowand had a career year right before he signed with us.

Werth has had 3.5 seasons in a row just as good as Rowand’s was.

Since 2007, in roughly 3.5 seasons of PT, Werth has been worth 17 WAR. That is consistency. The last time he was worth less than 4 WAR over a full season was 2007 – when he only played half a year and was still worth 3.2.

SIGNING JAYSON WERTH IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE SIGNING AARON ROWAND.

SIGNING AARON ROWAND HAPPENED AFTER ROWAND HAD ONE GOOD YEAR. WERTH HAS HAD FOUR IN A ROW.

This is a discussion about

Whether or not the Giants SHOULD sign Werth.

by GiantPain on Sep 12, 2010 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions

Should? NO...why? because they can't afford him. Sabes got very defensive about this when asked by Barbieri about not landing some of the key FA's of the past couple of years. Sabes said it flat out...players don't want to play here.

How about “Yes, they should sign him. They should spend 100 mill over five years”. Now what? You’ve got a dude that might hit 25 home runs for a couple of years. I don’t think the Giants will have much flexibility with their payroll for the next few years.

by dregarx on Sep 13, 2010 12:06 AM PDT up reply actions

All skills decline obviously. And you may think speed would be the one thing to decline the fastest.

But think about it, what’s the most important tool for a baseball player? Their eyes.

There really aren’t many players that fit the bill. Adam Dunn, Carlos Pena, Pat Burrell, etc.

Also, the concept has been known to be flawed, as the sample in which it was developed was extremely limited – I believe the top 100 players with that skill set – effectively removing the lower quality players. There are some other things wrong with it too, use Google.

I always think that the biggest risks are the guys that aren’t balanced. Crawford is heavily dependent on elite defense (which may overrate him), and superb baserunning (almost adds a win each season that way).

But someone like Werth hits for average, hits for power, walks a lot, plays good defense and is a decent enough baserunner sounds like a safe bet. Not to mention he was a late bloomer so his aging curve is slightly different.

Long post was long.

Mark De Rosa?

Need to find spots for De Rosa; perhaps let him replace Uribe as utility man, while we get a wide-ranging shortstop to play every day.

Cody Ross. The accidental Giant. Ross was claimed on waivers from the Marlins on Aug. 22, presumably to keep him from getting to the Padres.

It turns out the Giants want to keep Ross beyond this season — he is valuable as a strong defender who can play all three outfield positions, though his offense has tailed off.

Ross is earning $4.45 million and eligible for salary arbitration. The Giants probably will want to work out a deal at a lower salary.

I hope this is true.

His net offense value for 2010 . . .

. . . (speaking of Florida time only, I haven’t got combined stats to hand) is about 87% of his career worth (including this year in “career”). He is not, on offense, the answer to a maiden’s prayer, but he is adequate, and his positional flexibility is a significant asset.

Ideal lineup (until Torres gets back)

Freddy Sanchez
Posey
Huff
Burrell
Sandoval
Ross

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

OT: The Crackdown

A couple weeks ago, I finished watching the second season of Dexter. It’s not that it’s a bad show, or even that the second season was worse than the first, but I don’t really have any desire to keep watching it.

I liked season two more than season one, but I think you’re fine not watching the show after that. Season three is a let down and season four is pretty familiar in terms of the show’s formula, but it does have a surprise or two that you can just read about on-line somewhere.

by Every6thDay on Sep 12, 2010 10:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The seasons are getting a little formulaic – very slow start with some OH SHIT moments mixed in, then finally building to an epic last couple of episodes.

No, they want you to think they might break the formula before they go back to business as usual because hey, free drama.

There’s a lot that can go wrong when you’re ten years wrong. She obviously has great training, and is very mature/composed for her age, but if she’s mismanaged at all it could get derailed pretty quickly.

Wishing her the best, obviously. I’ve just seen it happen to friends who had very promising careers in music have it happen to them.

Baggs post-game notes are up

Best:

The Giants will face two lefties in the three-game series against the Dodgers (Clayton Kershaw on Tuesday, Ted Lilly on Thursday). Seems like a good time to get Ross some at-bats.

And perhaps start Nate Schierholtz in right field on Wednesday against Chad Billingsley.

What about Jose Guillen? Well … I’m changing my tune on him again.

Guillen had a nice battle against Latos to get a sacrifice fly on a two-strike swing today, but it’s getting harder and harder to justify playing him every day – no matter what he was or wasn’t promised by management.

by GiantPain on Sep 12, 2010 10:30 PM PDT reply actions

Oh, Baggs
After the game, I asked Manager Bruce Bochy if he and GM Brian Sabean had discussed external possibilities for a leadoff man/center fielder. He said no, nothing has come up yet.

But here’s a thought: The Dodgers acquired Scott Podsednik in late July and they aren’t going anywhere now. I could see Ned Colletti doing the Giants a favor and sending him over for whomever Sabean would give him off the 40-man roster (Alex Hinshaw, Waldis Joaquin, etc.).

Podsednik will arrive at AT&T Park along with the rest of the Dodgers on Tuesday, too.

So hey, free shipping.

One detail: I don’t know Podsednik’s waiver status. If the Dodgers already placed Podsednik on waivers and pulled him back following a claim, he can’t be traded. (If he cleared waivers, he can be traded to anyone at any time.)

As you probably know, any players acquired after Sept. 1 are ineligible for the postseason roster. But if Scotty Pods can help for two weeks while Torres recovers from his appendectomy, you better believe he could earn himself a partial share – and he’d be worth getting.

It pains me to say it, but Podsednik would probably be a better option to lead off than anyone the Giants currently have. As it stands right now, Posey would probably be the best choice to lead off, and obviously that isn’t happening. So, given that, I would certainly give up Hinshaw for two weeks of Pods. (Note that is basically nothing.)

You do realize that Podsednik has played most of his career as a LF right? Where Ross has mostly been a CF? Huge difference?

"Catch that, Eckstein!" - Duane Kuiper

by DrDC on Sep 13, 2010 12:57 AM PDT up reply actions

Eh, Pods has played about 40% of his innings in CF and 60% in LF. while Ross has played about 60% in CF and 40% in RF. That’s probably worth about 2 or 3 runs additional difference, assuming fangraphs doesn’t adjust their cumulative OF totals for position, which is probably true. A four- or five-run difference still seems pretty minor to me, and probably not enough to make up for Podsednik being better with the bat this season.

Moreover, since Pods is a LHH, you wouldn’t even have to choose; you could platoon the two of them.

by taliesin on Sep 13, 2010 7:14 AM PDT up reply actions

Ross would be a better player to have in the lineup, so I’d rather have him at leadoff.

Shift A

HOLY HELL COMMENT EXPLOSION.

Nice try steering the ship, jponry.

1) Torres’ injury worries me greatly. However, playoff teams have people step up to fill those voids. This will be a tough stretch for the Giants without their cantaloupe. If they make it through they will truly deserve to be in the playoffs. Lineup Tuesday? Lefty?
Rowand CF
Sanchez 2B
Huff 1B
Posey C
Burrell LF
Guillen RF
Uribe 3B
Rent SS
Zito P

Pablo sits against the lefty. Guillen never sits because, 60 rbi hitter.

2) Zito may not go nuts, but I think he will pitch decent, 2-3 runs over 6-7 innings. He will be pumped to open up this stretch at home against the struggling Dodgers.

3) I would like to see them try to take back our Buster.

4) 15. It was terrific to finally touch up Latos. However, would I do unspeakable things to have him pitch for the Giants? Yeah.

But I know I’m in the minority but I would rather have Guillen’s potential bat in there against a lefty. I like Nate but he just isn’t a consistent hitter, but then again the organization has never given a real opportunity to prove he can do it.

His career numbers are great against lefties, but he only has about 150 career ABs against them. So it’s promising, but there’s a healthy SSS alert around his split numbers.

Shift Saturday+Sunday

a) Torres’s absence will be felt strongly. I’m most worried about the road trip to Coors in two weekends—I cringe at the thought of Guillen trying to chase down balls in the gap, at altitude. Lineup Tuesday should be (but won’t be) Ross RF, Sanchez 2B, Huff 1B, Posey C, Burrell LF, Uribe 3B, Renteria SS, Rowand CF, Zito P

b) I think Barry is finally going to get a win on Tuesday. He pitched pretty well last time out, and he has real motivation what with Santiago Casilla’s win total getting larger in the rear-view mirror.

c) Buster Posey will never be taken away from us. Unfortunately, neither will Brian Sabean.

d) Mat Latos. Heh heh heh.

I was over on GLB and apparently the Giants broke some streak of Latos’ going games while giving up 2 runs or fewer today.

Which is funny because I was at a game this year against the Marlins where they broke Josh Johnson’s streak of games going 6 or more innings while giving up 2 runs or fewer.

And they also screwed up Ubaldo Jiminez’s run of success way back when.

Jeez, did we also smack around Roy Halladay or something?

Basically what I’m saying is that I’d prefer Coons (the Democrat) to Castle (the moderate), and that an O’Donnell victory would mean a Coons victory, whereas a Castle victory likely would not. THe situation’s different in other places.

But I think the term “moderate” is overused. Castle is a genuine moderate, but in Alaska Lisa Murkowski’s being called a moderate, when in reality she’s a product of nepotism with no redeeming characteristics who happens to be mildly pro-abortion (something that Congress doesn’t even control), who was defeated by a much better candidate who happened to be endorsed by Palin et al.

If the Demos actually stood for anything good, half the TPs would be Demos.

I’d like to throw it out there, as long as people are posting “wishful thinking” lineups in the absence of Torres, that Cody Ross and Freddy Sanchez are not the guys you want to have at the top of your lineup.

I know people are probably working off of alterations to Bochy’s previous lineups, but seriously, most of the lineups I see have a hitter with a .320 OBP talent level at the top. That’s not going to maximize your run output. I’d see this as close to optimal:

Posey
Huff
Burrell
Sanchez
Sandoval
Uribe
Ross
Schierholtz/Guillen

Just because it looks unorthodox doesn’t mean it’s less efficient.

by DrDC on Sep 13, 2010 1:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Starts off well . . .

. . . but where did Sanchez at clean-up sneak in?

The current Giants with OB stats above league average (.316) are:

Huff .370
Burrell .376
Posey .354
Fontenot .351
FSanchez .334
Renteria .333
Sandoval .321

The Giants with above-average (.361) TB/PA stats—roughly indicative of RBI ability—are:

Posey .462
Huff .438
Burrell .434
Uribe .393
Sandoval .376
Ishikawa .365

As can readily be seen, Huff and Burrell are, right now, virtual twins.

A reasonable use of the talent (keeping in mind The Book’s recommendations) is probably—

Huff 1B
Burrell LF
Uribe SS
Posey C
Sandoval 3B
Ross CF
Guillen/Schierholtz RF
FSanchez/Fontenot 2B

—where the slashes are “take yer pick” (or by handedness). Posey is in #4 because that’s actually more critical (according to The Book) than the #3 hole. Personally, I’d be willing to entertain arguments for Sandoval changing places with Uribe, but it depends on how strong a case can be made for “Panda’s back”.

Joe Mauer is from Minnesota. My adopted son, RHP Steve Edlefsen, is from Minnesota. Joe Mauer is very good at baseball. Call up Steve Edlefsen, Giants! Science™ is begging you.

Two words for leadoff in Bochy's mind....

Jeff Francis will be held to 70 pitches tonight. Am I right in thinking that long relief is a weak spot (TWSS) for the Rox?

They could be Giants...but not really.

I think they said 60-70 pitches. I’m being optimistic, obviously.

But seriously folks...

What’s wrong with Darren Ford? If he could bunt, even a little bit, or adopt a Henderson-esque batting stance, he could get on base at least once every three AB. If he can catch a fly ball, his wheels would allow him to play center.

That would lead us to:

Ford – CF
Posey – C
Huff – 1B
Burrell – LF
Uribe – SS
Sandoval – 3B
Schierholtz/Ross platoon – RF
Fontenot – 2B

And if Franchez is OK, pop him up to #2

And move everyone down a slot.

Problem with Ford:

Ford’s line in AA: .251/.315/.365

Give him a shot

We have KNOWN mediocrity in Rowand/Velez etc…. Why not give our fastest player EVAH a shot?

He couldn't do worse than Rowand did yesterday..

Unless he shit in the dugout.

I have a five year old niece who can’t hit major league pitching. Let’s give her a shot. We have KNOWN mediocrity in Rowand/Velez.

This thought is absolutely crazy. The guy hits like a pitcher. You can’t bunt yourself on base once a game when the infield is charging every single pitch. You have to be able to hit before you can bunt hit.

"HER NERDS"?

Is that the name of Jponry’s backup band?
