Really great article written by Tom Friend, about the former Padres pitcher who died of a drug overdose in the mid 90s. Lots of accounts from his family, friends and teammates tell the story of a tortured soul who dealt with abuse from an overbearing father. There are quotes from Flannery and Bochy as well, who were teammates of his. As well as Dravecky, who was really close to him. Kind of a depressing read and a sad, but very interesting story.

I just finished reading that piece. It was harrowing. Amazing how much damage horrible parents can do.

Yes, really, I have not updated my blog in a long long time: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball

Such a sad article. Thanks for posting it, though.

It’s funny how you watch these games, root for and against these players, and never know what’s going on in their personal lives, and how it affects their performance. I always thought of him as an excellent pitcher who was a bit of a creep because of the Birch thing. Sorry to hear about what he went through.

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees.

Wow.

I don’t know what to say to that.

It just shows how little we really know about the behind-the-scenes lives of the players, where even if we hear a rumor or trouble at home, it’s really just that: a rumor.

Very well-written article, thanks for the link

The stuff with his father I didn’t know about but the drug issues I did.

Truly one of the best profile pieces I’ve seen in quite some time.
