minor lines, 8/9/10
Highlights from the Giants' farm: Kevin Pucetas allowed 1 ER in 6.0 IP, and Chris Dominguez and Juan Perez both homered among three hits each. Also notable, Kelvin Marte made his first start since last May and combined with two relievers for a shutout.
AAA: Fresno defeated Albuquerque 9-1
(after trailing 1-0 through six innings)
Fresno: 3B Jesus Guzman: 2 for 4, HR, 2B, SO
Fresno: C Jackson Williams: 2 for 4, 2 2B
Fresno: 3B Tony Pena: 1 for 1, 2B
Fresno: SP Kevin Pucetas: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K--1 HR
Guzman and Williams both had a couple XBHs for the Grizzlies. Guzman had his 16th HR and 14th double. Williams had his 5th and 6th PCL doubles. Pena, the former shortstop converted a year ago to pitching, entered the game in a double switch and doubled in his lone plate appearance.
Pucetas had his most effective start in some time. In his previous nine starts, the only time had allowed less than 2 ER was a start in which he had just 4.2 IP.
AA: Richmond had a scheduled off-day
(Their only other remaining scheduled off-day is next Monday August 16.)
A+: San Jose lost to Lancaster 6-2
San Jose: CF Juan Perez: 3 for 4, HR, 2B
San Jose: SS Ehire Adrianza: 1 for 3, 3B
San Jose: SP Justin Fitzgerald: 6.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 3 K--2 HR, 1 WP
Perez had his 10th HR and 34th double as he had half of the Giants' six hits and raised his AVG above .300. Adrianza had his 4th triple, his first XBH in his last ten games.
Fitzgerald allowed 4 ER in for the third time in his last five starts. After an ERA of 2.13 in nine starts before May, his ERA has been over 5.00 in his dozen starts since.
A-: Augusta defeated Asheville 8-0
Augusta: 3B Chris Dominguez: 3 for 4, HR
Augusta: DH Ryan Cavan: 1 for 4, HR
Augusta: SP Kelvin Marte: 3.2 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--2 WP
Augusta: RP Jeremy Toole: 4.0 IP, 3 H, 6 K--1 HB
While every GreenJacket in the lineup contributed at least one hit, Dominguez led the way with his three hits, raising his AVG to .261. Both he and Cavan had a three-run HR, which were Dominguez's 17th HR and Cavan's 12th HR.
Marte, who had five Sally League last starts to begin the 2009 season, made his first start since being sidelined. He combined with two relievers for a shutout. One of those relievers was Toole, who made just his second relief appearance among sixteen starts this year.
ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Eugene 3-1
Salem-Keizer: SS John Eshleman: 1 for 3, BB, SO
Salem-Keizer: SP Taylor Rogers: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Salem-Keizer: RP Andrew Romo: 2.0 IP, 3 K--1 HB
Batting leadoff, Eshleman was the lone Volcano to reach base safely twice. He had one of their four hits (all singles) and one of their five walks.
After Rogers had one of his best starts of the year (1 ER in 6.0 IP), Rogers' tenth start matched his shortest start of the year. Romo struck out three of his seven batters. Rogers and Romo also combined for a 12/0 GO/FO line.
R: Giants defeated Padres 6-5 (8 innings) in game 1
Scottsdale: RF Rafael Rodriguez: 3 for 4, 2B, SO
Scottsdale: CF Chuckie Jones: 1 for 3, 2B, 2 SO
Scottsdale: SP Armando Paniagua: 3.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 2 K--1 IBB, 1 HB, 2 WP
Raf-Rod had the rookie Giants' only multi-hit performance, raising his AVG to .292. Jones, who was born in the same month as Raf-Rod, reached base twice but also struck out twice. His hits and walks combined equal his strikeouts (33 H, 14 BB, 47 SO).
Allowing 4+ ER for the third time in eight starts, Paniagua's ERA rose to nearly 5.50.
R: Giants lost to Padres 4-0 (7 innings) in game 2
Scottsdale: C Derek Dibbens: 2 for 2
Scottsdale: SP Andy Altemus: 2.0 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 0 BB, 2 K--1 HR
Scottsdale: RP Heath Hembree: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 3 K
Playing in his seventh pro game, Dibbens singled in both his plate appearances, accounting for two of the rookie Giants' four hits.
Altemus made his first pro start after twelve relief appearances but allowed 4 ER in 2.0 IP. Hembree struck out three of his four batters.
DSL: Giants lost to Mets1 2-1 (7 innings) in game 1
Dominican: SS Shrendell Mujica: 2 for 3, BB, CS
Dominican: SP Joan Gregorio: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Mujica (age unavailable) reached base three times, but his AVG remains below the Mendoza line. Gregorio (18.6 y.o.) bounced back from his season-high 6 ER in his previous start with a solid start to lower his ERA back to 2.76.
DSL: Giants and Mets1 suspended in 4th inning with score tied 0-0
Dominican: SP Yeini Martinez: 3.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 4 K--1 WP
Martinez had a solid start going before the game was suspended, while offensively the Gigantes did not have a hit through the first three innings.

Heath Hembree - heir apparent to Brian Wilson?
He’s very raw and wild, but he can already throw his FB 96-97 mph, and has an effective slider (when he can control it). I like what I see of him in this clip from the past college season. He’s tall and lanky, with an athletic body. More experience and time with Tidrow and our other pitching gurus should smooth out his mechanics (the main issue that I see is an inconsistent and unbalanced finish with his landing foot) should help him immensely, but he’s already got all of the ingredients to be a dominating reliever.

Do we still like Juan Perez? I haven’t been paying attention to his stat lines, but his numbers don’t look as good right now as they did earlier in the season. He’s struck out 89 times to 25 walks — 0.28 BB/K — and his ISO of .186 is nice, but nowhere near tops for the California League*

Perez is 27th by ISO in the Cal League right now. Does his defense hold up as a CF?
Ask me about my blog.
One thing I’ve noticed about Perez’ D is he’s racked up OF assists this year: 15 by my count. Don’t know about his speed/range as a CF. It’s interesting the way SJ has moved Perez and Peguero back and forth interchangably in CF and RF. I’d be interested to know what the final result on the two is — who they think works best where.

The Giants love his D
The Giants think so much of JCP’s defense in CF that they moved Peguero to RF to accomodate him. I can’t give you any first-hand info, but he’s supposed to have above-average speed, which should translate into above-average range.

Seems to me that they’ve actually switched back and forth a good deal, as indeed, they’ve switched back and forth between leadoff and third position in the lineup. I’ve inferred that they want to keep their options open in both cases.

It's an easy concept
ISO = (SLG %) minus (Batting Avg.)
The theory is that you separate the singles that a batter hits from his estra-base hits It’s position-dependent, of course, but anything over about .180 is considered good.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
It’s just extra bases per hit. If you get a single, your ISO is .000; if you get a double, it’s 1.00.
It’s pretty simple. ISO stands for isolated power and it’s a measure of how much “raw” power a player hits for. Since batting average treats every hit as a single, ISO removes batting average entirely from SLG.
ISO = (SLG-BA)
That’s the quickest and easiest way to do it. Though, there are some other methods people use. Generally in the majors the league average ISO is around .150
For example, this year Prince Fielder has an ISO of .221 vs. Aaron Rowand’s .148

Can I be indulged in an extremely semantical pet peeve of mine, here? I really dislike the use of the term “raw” power in the context of isos, because as a scouting term, raw power describes a player’s capabilities as opposed to their abilities, which are described as “game power”. As for instance, Nate Schierholtz breaks windows two blocks down in BP (raw power), but he’s shown no ability to translate that skill into actual HRs and XBHs in his major league career (game power).
As isos are definitely trying to record something that has happened, as opposed to predicting something that has the capacity to happen, I don’t think the term “raw” power should apply. It’s more like “distilled” power to me.

"it’s a measure of how much "raw" power a player hits for"
It really isn’t, because it’s still dependent on how many hits the batter gets: before you can drive the ball, you have to hit the ball. A true measure of “raw power” is the power factor, which is total bases per hit. ISO would also (like BA and SLG) be a better measure were it calculated per PA rather than per AB.
Professional baseball analyst since 1980.
Don’t forget to take park factors into consideration. You’ll notice that at least half of the guys on your list play their home games in extreme band-box/launching-pad ballparks, They wouldn’t be putting up anywhere near those numbers playing in SJ. Also, JCP plays the premium defensive position, unlike 80% of the guys on your list – you need to break it down by position for it to be meaningful.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
The league average CAL hitter this year has an ISO in the .148 range.
Park matters, of course, but I think it’s only at the extreme ends of the spectrum — extreme hitters’ park vs. extreme pitchers’ park — that’s going to make things wonky. I’d rather not look at offense by position, instead I’d rather just use a positional adjustment. That seems cleaner to me, IMO.
Ask me about my blog.
Oh, and I’d never use just ISO to look at a player. I’d rather use LWTS or something. ISO is just another tool that helps me answer questions of ‘Who is hitting for more power’.
Ask me about my blog.

Linear Weight Total Score? Not sure if TS is total score or not. But I believe this is Tango creation where he assigns values to different batting outcomes based on the run environment. So for 99-02 seasons the equation would be something like this: .5S + .75D + 1T + 1.4HR + .3W – .1 (AB-H) = LWTS
xanthan is this even close or am I using this stat wrong?

Carlton Salters
An interesting pick up as a converted WR from Arkansas in the AZL. Has only seen limited action in his 2 games, but possibly a project to keep an eye on as a football to baseball convert. He’s old but look for him in the boxscores to see how they use him.
Here’s the link to the in-depth info that gobroks posted a few days back:
http://blogs.nwaonline.com/slophouse/2010/07/salters-bids-adieu-to-hogs-joins-giants-organization/
He’s a really big, well-built guy – with him in RF and Chuckie in CF, I don’t think any team is going to be wanting to get in any brawls with the AZL team this year. I had to chuckle when he got into his first game on Saturday. He went in as a PH and defensive replacement for RafRod in the 8th inning, and just the image of the difference between Salter’s football physique and RafRod’s extreme stringbean physique struck me as funny.

From casually looking at the boxscores, it has seemed that he’s really re-found his hitting mojo in the last couple of months.
Of course, the total mismanagement of the 40 man might make it impossible to add anyone not currently already on the 40 man.

Bowker’s K/BB isn’t even good anymore. In 250 PA’s this year, it’s 40/24, and that’s with 4 IBB’s. He could make, but the case for him is much weaker than people are making it sound.

He died in 1982 so he missed the current stupid drunk guy blather, but he was particularly bothered by the ubiquitous dinner-time anti-diarrhea spots. There was really nothing quite like the image of a dude shitting his pants while you were digging into a nice hot bowl of chili .

Thanks. I will check it out. It has been really fun to watch MadMen. It reminds me of conversations we used to have around the dinner table. I recall one when I was about 11 or 12 about the early FedEX ads “If it absolutely positively has to be there overnight”. I think the gist was that they would guarantee the delivery or it would be free. And I remember asking my grandfather what FedEx planned to do for the poor chap who lost his job because the package was late. He loved it and imagined this follow on: “Don’t worry Mr. Smith, I realize you lost your job, but at least the delivery was free!”
