Billy Ripken is not a fuck face
I think, as usual, they will start out okay against the cupcakes on the schedule and then beat one big-ish conference opponent to get people excited. Then they will lose a game against Duke or UNC or something and everyone will be like, “Oh I knew they sucked.” Then they’ll lose a few games to Miami/FSU/VTech. Then they will pull of a string of good games against some decent opponents and beat Notre Dame and get people thinking that if things go right, they could back into a BCS Bowl. Then they will lose to NC State or something to keep them out of contention for the division title.
That’s what always happens.

There are a lot of club ice hockey teams in California, though. Some pretty good ones, too. It could happen, but it’d probably take a private school that has the gobs of money to be able to start a program.

Need more kids playing it earlier, too. It’ll happen eventually. The Sharks are a catalyst to youth hockey in the bay area
Billy Ripken is not a fuck face
There was an interview with Rob Blake after he retired, and he said that when he started playing with the Kings back in the 80s, there were like three ice rinks in the state and no kids programs. Fast forward to today, and two born-and-raised California kids were drafted in the first round in the NHL draft, and the Jr. Sharks, Kings, and Ducks programs are some of the more popular youth hockey programs in the country.
I would not rule out it happening within the next decade or two, especially if the California teams win more championships and draw more interest.

Berkeley’s chemistry stipend, if I recall correctly, is ~25K/year. Which is probably more than humanities make, but still shitty.
Yeah, mine is slightly better but not by much. Fortunately I was able to save up some money in the years between undergrad and grad education.
Osiris, Lord of the Dead, and relief pitcher for the Fresno Grizzlies.
Our minimum at Illinois is nearly that (~22K/year), but the cost of living is maybe 30% of the Bay. As much as I love the Bay, it is crazy expensive.
Yeah, and I’m in DC which isn’t any better. I actually find DC to be more expensive than SF just because food costs so much more (rent is about the same).

Yeah. Humanities students get ~13K/year here. But you could legitimately live well here with that stipend (if you don’t mind having a roommate or two).
It’s about $11,000 here. More if you teach in the summer, though, which I will be doing.

Yeah, that’s another point. The numbers I quoted for the humanities kids were 9 month stipends with 20 hours a week. For the chemistry kids, it’s a 12 month stipend with expected 60+ hour work weeks.
Our appointments are officially 20 hours. In reality, though, if you’re reading and giving feedback on papers from 50 students, though…

Yeah. I don’t know how it is there, but humanities students are actually allowed to take employment with outside companies and stuff here. Chem grad students have to get permission just to tutor, and for obvious reasons can only do so if they’re not TA’ing.
We have to get permission to work outside of school in the English department. My wife, who is in Library and Information Studies, doesn’t have that restriction (which is good, because she has a portrait photography business).

The govt training grants (NIH and NSF at least) definitely prohibit any outside work while they cover a student’s stipend. Some students still do it, though.

I actually am taking on some debt to pay off other debt, actually. I had some private loans as an undergrad, and the terms on them are terrible. So I’m taking out more Stafford loans now than I actually need, and using those to pay off the crappy private loans.

Which 2 out blown 9th inning No-No was worse?
Galaragga’s with the blown call by the ump, or Morrow’s where Hill had a shot at making the play (albeit a difficult one)?
By far the blown call. That play would have been one of the top plays of the year if Hill made it, while Galaragga had the perfect game.

You’re right, it is a good thing that Todd Wellemeyer isn’t in our starting rotation.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
Why does everyone assume Sanchez/Bumgarner would HAVE to be gone to get a hitter? Sabean has been pretty clear in stating he wasn’t trading any of the starters.
Also, Wellemeyer for one game would suck. But if the offense doesn’t score for anyone on the staff, it won’t matter who the pitcher is. Right now, 3 runs given up equals a loss.
Because,
Everyteam that had a hitter to go after, requested MadBum or Sanchez. It was pretty well documented.
Also Wellemeyer for the rest of the season would suck more.

"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
And…. That’s where you try and deal, and give, and take, and offer, and counter….
I’m well aware of what teams were asking for, but any team would (likely) be willing to take a different deal if it was beneficial to them…. I highly doubt the calls go “Hi, Brian. We’d like Sanchez/Bumgarner, and will not discuss any other package.”
Why do you think Sabean didn’t try that?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
No, I'm sure he did...
I think my post is more a commentary on many here, (You included) Who were quite vocal about us mouth-breathers who were hoping for a bat, and that Buster Posey alone made this offense tops in the league.
Buster is great, I see nothing wrong with trying to improve on what was quickly becoming a decent offense.
Uh, I certainly always thought the Giants could use another bat. I just didn’t think that the options available and what they would cost would be worth it.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

So far this year:
SF Team OPS: .730 (about average in the NL)
OPS w/RISP: .688 (last in the NL)
Osiris, Lord of the Dead, and relief pitcher for the Fresno Grizzlies.
Wow...really?
What’s up with that?
I’m guessing it’s at least partly a reflection of the Giants lineup having a few really good, dangerous hitters, but those hitters are intermingled with really bad, worthless hitters. So, when a pitcher gets into trouble, they can pitch around the good hitters and get out the lousy ones when there are runners on.
Just a guess.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?
Probably some bad luck there.

Yeah, but...
I mean, sure there’s bad luck. I think there’s always bad luck. But I don’t think that’s 100% of the explanation. I do think there’s probably more of an element with the Giants lineup where pitchers have a little bit more leeway to pick and choose the matchups they want when they need an out. With really good lineups that have good hitters top to bottom, pitchers don’t have that luxury. And with really bad lineups, pitchers pretty much just pitch to whoever’s up, because there are no threats.
I think the Giants lineup might be a little more pitcharoundable with men on.
Pitcharoundable. Wow, that’s an awesome word. I’m taking out a patent!
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?
