by Karlifornia on Aug 8, 2010 12:59 PM PDT up reply actions

I think, as usual, they will start out okay against the cupcakes on the schedule and then beat one big-ish conference opponent to get people excited. Then they will lose a game against Duke or UNC or something and everyone will be like, “Oh I knew they sucked.” Then they’ll lose a few games to Miami/FSU/VTech. Then they will pull of a string of good games against some decent opponents and beat Notre Dame and get people thinking that if things go right, they could back into a BCS Bowl. Then they will lose to NC State or something to keep them out of contention for the division title.

That’s what always happens.

There are a lot of club ice hockey teams in California, though. Some pretty good ones, too. It could happen, but it’d probably take a private school that has the gobs of money to be able to start a program.

There was an interview with Rob Blake after he retired, and he said that when he started playing with the Kings back in the 80s, there were like three ice rinks in the state and no kids programs. Fast forward to today, and two born-and-raised California kids were drafted in the first round in the NHL draft, and the Jr. Sharks, Kings, and Ducks programs are some of the more popular youth hockey programs in the country.

I would not rule out it happening within the next decade or two, especially if the California teams win more championships and draw more interest.

Yeah, mine is slightly better but not by much. Fortunately I was able to save up some money in the years between undergrad and grad education.

Yeah, and I’m in DC which isn’t any better. I actually find DC to be more expensive than SF just because food costs so much more (rent is about the same).

Why does everyone assume Sanchez/Bumgarner would HAVE to be gone to get a hitter? Sabean has been pretty clear in stating he wasn’t trading any of the starters.

Also, Wellemeyer for one game would suck. But if the offense doesn’t score for anyone on the staff, it won’t matter who the pitcher is. Right now, 3 runs given up equals a loss.

by SixFourThree on Aug 8, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

Because,

Everyteam that had a hitter to go after, requested MadBum or Sanchez. It was pretty well documented.

Also Wellemeyer for the rest of the season would suck more.

Wow...really?

What’s up with that?

I’m guessing it’s at least partly a reflection of the Giants lineup having a few really good, dangerous hitters, but those hitters are intermingled with really bad, worthless hitters. So, when a pitcher gets into trouble, they can pitch around the good hitters and get out the lousy ones when there are runners on.

Just a guess.

Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?

by howtheyscored on Aug 8, 2010 1:57 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but...

I mean, sure there’s bad luck. I think there’s always bad luck. But I don’t think that’s 100% of the explanation. I do think there’s probably more of an element with the Giants lineup where pitchers have a little bit more leeway to pick and choose the matchups they want when they need an out. With really good lineups that have good hitters top to bottom, pitchers don’t have that luxury. And with really bad lineups, pitchers pretty much just pitch to whoever’s up, because there are no threats.

I think the Giants lineup might be a little more pitcharoundable with men on.

Pitcharoundable. Wow, that’s an awesome word. I’m taking out a patent!
