I honestly thought he was going to challenge Gordie Howe’s record of oldest hockey player in the NHL (Howe retired at 52), but I guess it wasn’t meant to be.

Yeah, I have no idea why that is either. Maybe it’s because the best players usually play only a bit over a third of the game, and defensemen especially tend to be less active on the ice, but still. You’d think all those checks and hits would take a bigger toll.
I mean, the 40 and older club of the past two years off the top of my head are Recchi, Chelios, Modano, Blake, Selanne, Lemieux, Brind’Amour, Hasek, and Lidstrom. That’s a pretty big group, considering it’s rare that athletes play into their 40s. And Lidstrom is still considered one of the best defensemen in the league!

But I love being obsessed with sports. It’s much better than being obsessed with a scripted TV show, since the seasons are (mostly) longer, and rarely does a team have a series finale.
