Dear Giants, Please Make Up Your Mind

Dear Giants,

Let me begin by saying that as a fan I have a feeble heart, which is not my fault, and while it may not directly be this team's fault, it is the Giants' fault. You see you've put me through too much. As a little boy it was Jose Oquendo and the Loma Prieta quake; as an adolescent it was Salomon Torres and letting Will Clark go; and as an adult it was Scott Spiezo and the game ball that jinxed San Francisco out of its first World Series.

You haven't won a World Series in my lifetime, but have made up for that by also having not won one in my father's lifetime. Even through all of this, I've still loved you. I follow your prospects who will probably never become utility player's--even in Pittsburgh or Toronto--with zeal and optimism. I watch upwards of 120 games a year, and would watch more if not for Fox and their stupid Saturday baseball rights. I attended many games at the 'Stick, suffering through hypothermia, and sometimes terrible baseball, when I lived in California and now that I'm on the East coast attend entire series whenever you're within driving distance.

Truth be told, I've been pretty good to you, even though you haven't always been good to me. Of course I did miss the better part of a few seasons while I was in the Marine Corps and bouncing around shitty independent leagues holding on to the dream of some day actually playing for you, but I guess you could say that you benefited from that too in different ways. Even still, from the time I was 7 or 8 until my mid 30's where I find myself today, I've been pretty loyal to you and haven't asked for much in return.

Today I do want something from you though, I want you to make up your mind! If you're a playoff team, please start playing like one, and if you're not, would you go ahead and fall apart now so I don't have to have my heart broken again. It's not that I don't want you to win, I want you to win really, really bad, but if you're not going to win, would you spare me the pain? If you fall apart now, I can start thinking about who you'll sign in free agency and begin hoping for next year. You see I'm good at that, having been a Giants fan for nearly three decades.

It's not just that though, I want to believe that you can win it all, but just can't. My heart says maybe, but my brain says no. The pitching just isn't at the level it needs to be at for this team to win, but even if it was I fear Bochy would find a way to manage the game away or the defense of DH's and players playing out of position would implode and spoil a great start. If you were to go ahead and self destruct now it wouldn't just be easier on me, it might actually wake ownership up to the fact that you'll probably never win it all with Sabes and Bork at the helm.

Of course if I'm wrong and you can win it all, then please start playing like it, but one way or another would you make up your mind.

Giant's baseball....Torture
