108 pitches?

In truth, I reckon he should never have started that last inning. It was more than just pitches, it was stress pitches. Bochy is the classic old manager: he doesn’t manage the game, the game manages him—pitchers left in till they clearly need to come out, instead of taken out when it is wise to assume that they’ve given you what they’ve got for that day.

Of course, when he did come out, the choices following were, as DrDC notes, rather Ugh. Santiago Casilla probably shouldn’t be on the staff, current SSS results notwithstanding, but one would think that even a Bruce Bochy would at least know not to use him when the game is closer than 4 runs or so. As I have said before, a can of gas and an open matchbook.

Perspective?

Please? Home runs come at maybe one for every nine or ten hits. He had, last time I looked 15 hits (with a .385 BA). How many homers do you expect in that time?

I am not a fan of Guillen’s, but much of what is being dumped on him hereabouts is just silly. His net offensive productivity is the best on the team for anyone with 10 or more plate appearances. Of course that is over an absurdly short sample size (40 PA when I looked), but people are talking about him as if he were underperforming Eli Whiteside or Aaron Rowand. And he is playing hurt, which is not his fault—he doesn’t make out the lineup card. He is thus comically slow, and obviously shouldn’t be out there, but even so, that “easy popup” he dropped the other day was clearly wind-pushed at the last moment, as the problems the sure-handed Freddy Sanchez had on the very next play should have made clear.

I see no reason Guillen as he is should ever be anything but off the bench (at least not that Ross is available), but it’s not like he’s the sort of disaster he’s being made out to be.

I think more than anything, it’s just a giant metaphor for the ineptitude of how this organization runs thing.

. . . or of any of his other short-term stats. What bothers me is the people who do make something of them, but the wrong something. It’s perfectly fair to say “I don’t care what his short-term offensive performance for the Giants has been, I don’t think he’s a good hitter, and I don’t think his bat will help the team going forward.” That’s a statement that can be defended or attacked based on reasonable extant stats. But it is wildly unfair to say “His short-term offensive performance for the Giants has been lousy,” because it’s just dead wrong.

He is, but that doesn’t make Bochy’s statement less true.

You can make a similar argument that Sandoval and Sanchez haven’t helped the offense because it hasn’t been that good if you take out 20% of the games. He’s not a good player but he’s still helped the offense since he’s been here.

Why would he be talking about how Guillen’s hit overall? All that’s relevant to how much he’s helped here is how well he’s hit here, not anywhere else. I’m really confused why this is so difficult to understand.

by kingofthacove on Aug 29, 2010 5:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Actually, it's even more relevant

Since what Guillen has done with the Giants has minimal implications on the performance he will have for the rest of the season as opposed to his entire career.

I don’t see how THAT’S difficult to understand. Why wouldn’t he be talking about Guillen overall? If he was talking about Guillen’s performance with the Giants then it would be a pointless argument.

STRAWMAN STRAWMAN STRAWMAN

No one is talking about the implications Guillen will have over the rest of the season. No one.

He’s referring to Guillen’s production over this limited sample of games he’s played, which was in reply to Bochy, who was talking about Guillen helping over the limiting sample of games.

Limited sample of games. Guillen’s production over that limited sample. The offense scoring runs over this limited sample. Guillen hitting well over this limited sample. Guillen helping this offense score over this limited sample. Guillen over the next month? Nope, just this sample.

If you want to talk about how Guillen will do as a Giant, start a new subthread, because that’s not what this one is about. It’s about the validity of Bochy saying that the offense has scored more runs with Guillen here.

Perhaps we’re reading this differently, but I’m reading what he’s saying is that "Guillen being an average hitter, will not have a meaningful impact as a Giant because of the random variation in a one month sample.

I don’t need to start a subthread, as that is a more important discussion than what Guillen has done thus far.

Look at the statement he’s replying to. The exchange is like this:

oldjacket: “I don’t think any player who hits that close to league average is going to have a meaningful impact on a team’s runs over such a small stretch of games.”

I’m pretty sure he is referring to Guillen’s impact in this “small stretch of games.” I can’t imagine that stretch of games referring to anything else other than the games he’s been here.

I think Guillen sucks. I don’t think he will be this good a hitter the rest of the year, but I do think in the 13 game he’s been here, he has helped, and that Bochy’s statement is true.

by kingofthacove on Aug 29, 2010 5:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Fair enough

But oldjacket’s post is still relevant, in that in this SSS whatever help he’s provided has been minimal, probably to the tune of around a quarter of a win.

Hell, if we want to play the SSS game, if you use WPA then Guillen has hurt the Giants more than he’s helped them so far.

It happens a lot on foul ball pop-ups where a fan reaches over the fence line and causes a fielder not to catch the ball. The batter is ruled out if the umpire believes the fielder would have made the catch.

There was a play a week or so ago where they used instant replay at Mays Field to determine if a fan with a glove caught a home run ball behind the fence line or whether he reached over. It was hard to tell from the replay so the umpires kept the original decision which was a home-run.

There is not a single manager in the world who would start jose guillen in right field and hit him in the middle of the line up in the MLB except for one man.

That one man uses jose guillen every single night in the hardest right field in the majors and continues to think that guillen is essential to the giants making the playoffs to spite having 3 better options on the bench.

Why is this one man still employed?

Well considering

the last three seasons (true talent level) Ross gets on base more, hits for more power, meanwhile Guillen is older and declining. Striking out is irrelevant, and there’s more to baserunning than stealing. Not to mention most base stealers don’t help their teams anyways unless their steal rate is ridiculously high.

Ross also has a career .030 point advantage in isolated power in his career (that difference is basically the same the past few years), so I don’t see how their power potential is the same.

Also, players being “hot” in baseball is a myth, typically fueled by fans and the media in response to small sample sizes and BABIP.

"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow

by DrDC on Aug 29, 2010 5:27 PM PDT up reply actions

Er…

There’s some truth to “hot” being a consequence of BABIP, but hitters are not robots. Their swing and approach is not identical from day to day, or from month to month. If they are making good contact, then yes, whether or not the ball drops impacts their numbers. But a good approach or good timing in your swing can make a hitter “hot.” You have to hit the ball before you can get hits.

by Solidarity on Aug 29, 2010 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions

This will probably turn into a debate of semantics

But, while that is true, I take anything in a SSS a grain of salt. I don’t know how often a player has a good game and announcers and analysts will talk about “having a good approach or having good timing,” when the next day that same player can go 0-4 with 4 K. Hitters can have good games while being in a supposed “cold streak,” while having poor ones in a supposed “hot streak.”

Hell, even good contact can be considered random variation (as in batted ball rates). You can put a good swing on a ball but still pop it up.

"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow

by DrDC on Aug 29, 2010 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

My point is that BABIP does not disallow a hot streak. My point is that it should be used as a tool to evaluate a hot streak.

Juan Uribe went on a tear during the second half of 2009, but some of those hits could be considered fluky. Balls were dropping that shouldn’t have, or that were perfectly placed. Was he hot? More likely lucky. But if over a one or two week stretch a player is hitting for high average, especially with good SLG and an elevated LD%, it probably means the player is doing something right.

Adoptive father of the enigmatic Michael Sandoval, and living vicariously through his proximity to Joe Mauer and the Panda.

by Solidarity on Aug 29, 2010 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions

That's possible

But my view is that it’s simply a small sample size thing, and anything (including a few line drives can happen). You can’t necessarily attribute it to a good approach (not that he should be discredited for that), but other things (say poor pitching) may play a role.

Again, this is a semantics argument at this point. The key is that you don’t manage around hot streaks (which Bochy does, typically in one or two game samples), as they typically have minimal prediction power.

by DrDC on Aug 29, 2010 5:50 PM PDT up reply actions

I think you put out the lineup that gives you the best chance to win the game. Lineup order is presumably just shuffling deck chairs anyway, if I understand the Saber-heads correctly, but by my recollection Bochy hasn’t done too much moving around based on “hot streaks.” Fast Torres is leading off, big bats in the middle, batters hitting around .250 at the bottom. From what I’ve seen, Bochy’s been sticking to his guns since the All-Star Break, now that Molina is gone and the “Aaron Rowand, Leadoff Hitter” experiment is over.

I followed the first few innings and then we headed off to that food festival in Jack London Square. (Ridiculously crowded. Like, 25,000 have never assembled in the same place in Oakland until today. Food was decent.)

Driving over I heard the score was 5-2 so I figured, well, at least Cain’s gonna get the win today, as stressful a first inning as he had. LOL. Poor Matt.

Crawford, namely. I would hope we sign him, though I bet he stays in the AL. Werth is a waste of money, IMO. not to mention he looks like a serial killer

by giant4life83 on Aug 29, 2010 9:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Werth has had a wOBA over .380 for 4 straight seasons with plus defense.

I just don’t see how you can say he’s a waste of money. It’s just not true.

I think Werth will get about as much money as Jason Bay, and he’s a bunch better than Jason Bay.

by GiantPain on Aug 29, 2010 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Being 31 doesn't help

Then again, Crawford’s 29 and most of his game is dependent on speed and defense which declines much quicker than offense. And Werth is also a somewhat late bloomer so his aging curve may be slightly different.

by DrDC on Aug 29, 2010 11:17 PM PDT up reply actions

Werth, for the right price (10 a year), is a good deal. But for the 15mil he may command, I don’t think it’s worth it.

Since Sandoval, Freddy, Posey, Torres, Ross are under control/signed 2011, that leaves LF, SS, 1B to deal with (provided Sabean makes the smart choice and keeps Ross as opening day RF as he is a 25 hr / .280 avg guy in a down year).

Barring a trade, Uribe is the best SS on the FA market.

Huff should definetely be re-signed for 1B, which leaves LF.

Sabean can do one of two things- sign a big contract on a power-hitting LF (crawford, werth), or he can resign Burrell for LF to gradually give way to Belt.

I would prefer that Belt is given the starting job in LF over an expensive signing, because we get DeRosa back next year too, as a super-utility man.

Honestly, next year’s plans are far off, and need to be looked at much more in-depth than I just did. Let’s see how this year plays out first, shall we?

by giant4life83 on Aug 30, 2010 1:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Ideally, I’d say Huff in LF and Belt at 1B would be a better idea. Belt is supposed to be really, really good at 1st. And Huff is a decent enough outfielder, probably average to slightly above average.

"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow

by DrDC on Aug 30, 2010 1:21 AM PDT up reply actions

Huff has proven to be a whole lot more athletic overall than expected, I’ll give ya that. How fast is Belt? Because Huff’s speed and range could diminish a little by next spring

by giant4life83 on Aug 30, 2010 1:27 AM PDT up reply actions

He's actually very fast, especially for a 1B

Check his SB numbers. So I suppose he could be a really good OF too, but he’s also probably the best 1B in the organization defensively (outside of Ish).

"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow

by DrDC on Aug 30, 2010 1:35 AM PDT up reply actions

I hear Fresno has been playing him in OF and at 1B, but if Belt is better defensively at 1B then that’s where I’d like him. Huff doesn’t seem to be better one way or the other, so be it 1B or LF I’m happy.

by giant4life83 on Aug 30, 2010 1:38 AM PDT up reply actions

fuck it, let’s talk roster 2011 (minus pitching):

C Posey
1B Belt
2B F Sanchez
3B Sandoval
SS Uribe
LF Huff
CF Torres
RF Ross

12 pitchers (5 starters, 7 pen), leaves 5 bench spots

20. Whiteside
21. DeRosa
22. ?
23. ?
24. ???

that leaves Rowand, Ish and Nate as the odd ones left out. Ish is interesting, as we’d then have 2 first basemen already, but he’s such a great PH. Rowand, Sabean won’t eat his contract, sadly. Nate, great DF replacement but can’t hit really.

So really, other than bringing in Belt, I think we have all the pieces in the organization already.

by giant4life83 on Aug 30, 2010 1:46 AM PDT up reply actions

oops, forgot Pat, if he can be had cheap, we should retain him. So that’s 2 spots left for Ish, Row, and Nate. IMO Ish should get one of them, and Nate the other. Rowand should be cut

by giant4life83 on Aug 30, 2010 1:49 AM PDT up reply actions

I think Belt himself has said he’s been stealing bases “off the pitcher” rather than “with his speed”. I think the SB speak more to base-running intelligence than foot speed. And his Outfield time is more about developing a little flexibility if the Giants need to get his bat into the major league roster and first base is occupied by a big (fat) FA or Panda.

by kennv on Aug 30, 2010 7:10 AM PDT up reply actions

either way, Huff at first and Belt in LF, or vice versa, that still begs the question- what will Sabeans big FA signing over the winter be? Personally, I hope it is just resigning Uribe, Huff and Burrell (as 4th OF/PH). Fontenot can go since DeRosa will be back, and Rent can take a hike. Rowand should go, Ish should stay, and Nate can stay as defensive replacement 5th OF.

and letting Guillen go his separate way. I will freak if he is signed to be opening day RF.

Crawford and Werth won’t both be signed, let alone the possibility of even one being signed. That would be blocking Belt. I know Belt plays 1B too, but that is Huff’s spot next year. he’s earned it.

My friend and I were pretty much able to catch anything right there, considering Market is so close, just walked a few blocks to catch the Muni and got on before the rush at the Embarcadero station.

It's true that splits aren't any type of substitute for park factors

However, an extremely pedestrian walk rate and a lower LD% than last year accompanied with a .030 increase in BABIP doesn’t exactly invoke confidence.

And all Rockies players produce screwy stats, the park adjustments are iffy there.

Statcorner uses component park factors

Which, both conceptually and in practice, are more fair to players (since it’s not just lumping slap hitters like Juan Pierre with guys like Dante Bichette)

I agree with you about CarGon going forward, but just in regard to this season, haters shouldn’t be hatin’.

My problem is

When splits are that wide, there’s something more going on. You linked the article about Holliday, but even then his road OPS was above .800, and even near .900 in some seasons.

CarGo is basically Bengie Molina on the road this year (last year’s Bengie), which is pretty alarming. We’re talking about a .500 point gap.

And last year it was

a more normal .943 vs .811

Any time you see a huge, crazy split like CarGo’s home and road splits this year, I think it’s safer to assume that it’s a weird fluke than to assume that he’s actually going to be Bengie Molina if he leaves Coors Field.

I want to believe

there’s a month left. they’re in it, but it seems they’re leaking oil badly at this point. Or maybe it’s just “dog days” kinda thing…certainly enough time to get hot and go on a run, even though that doesn’t seem likely w/o Lincecum turning it around.

Exactly, i mean, look, if you got nothing going on, there’s no harm in watching a game at all… because once you get through like the first few weeks of school you’ll figure out the routine and you’ll be good, everything will start to feel a little bit more slow and more relaxed

I'm glad this came up again.

Last time round, in all the foolery, I forgot to mention that if you want to overcome a dislike of clowns, what you need to do is watch Fellini’s film The Clowns (or, in the original, I Pagliacci). It should leave the most adamant clownophobic with a warm feeling about clowns.

It is apparently available free on line.

The film is a curious little thing. It is sort of a documentary on older European clowns and the clown tradition in Europe, but that’s not quite it. One might say it is more of a documentary on the making of a documentary on clowns, though it necessarily includes a lot of clown-act material (mostly re-created, as the originals are deceased). But this is a Fellini film, so it’s even more complicated than that: the documentary on the documentary is spurious, being a carefully crafted comedy movie in itself, with the humor in the pseudo-“documentary” derived from—of course—classic clown tradition (to say more would be spoilers). And there is a huge concluding act that slides farther and farther into the surreal.

It is a thoroughly charming and warm-hearted film, and I recommend it heartily to both lovers and (current) haters of clowns. Why I didn’t think of it for the “documentary” category in the Movies thread I can’t say (it would be a tie with Jazz on a Summer’s Day).

Oops: that free copy may be in French.

May: I’m not sure, but it looks like it.

So far as I can see quickly, the film—at least in English—has never made it to DVD, but is available on VHS (which is what my copy is). I see torrent downloads, but I don’t know what versions or quality. I also think there are DVD versons in the original Italian with English subtitles, but, after all, Google Is Your Friend. It’s worth the looking.

Down and Dirty News

I don’t know how much this happens in MLB teams, but the Cubs have a player who talked about filing a sexual harrassment claim against the team. He has not played very well, this year ,and was not claimed on waivers. They were most likely going to non-tender him, but now they are afraid. They are stuck with him, just as they are stuck with their big contracts. The claim is not against any individual. It is against the “team culture” Basically, the player, who is in need of “male enhancement”, felt uncomfortable with his better endowed team-mates cavorting around the clubhouse in the altogether, and his being left out of their silly games. He also didn’t like the fact that the “haves” shower first, and take their time, while the “have-nots” shower last. This is not a team rule; it is just a custom that is common throughout pro sports.

Holy crap

I just now stumbled upon a handful of my old baseball cards from ‘96 and ’97 and of the 10 I found there are 4 Giants before they were Giants. I’ve got Ray Durham (CWS), Edgar (FLA), Alan Embree (ATL) and Shawon Dunston (CHC). Haha I haven’t seen or touched a baseball card in about 10 years, I kinda miss flipping through my old collection that I had neatly organized into teams.

Also of note: None of these cards even list BB totals, and obviously OBP and SLG are nowhere to be found.

I’ve said this before, but it’s not even his contributions (or lack thereof) that bother me. It’s that he’s aggravating to watch, and seeing him play every day makes me want to punt small dogs.

FP said something on the radio the other day: even if they don’t say it, the other OFs are not happy to be losing playing time. I think Ross was a good pick-up, but Guillen really doesn’t bring anything to the table.

The only proof I can offer is their 6-9 record since his arrival. SSS, of course, but something at the time told me it was going to backfire and nothing has changed my mind so far.

Back on the market.

As much as I dislike Guillen

I don’t think even I can blame him for the collective suck in the starting rotation (mainly Lincecum and Zito).

Getting on-base isn’t worth much if you can’t take extra bases and can’t score. It’s the same problem that Bengie has: even if the people behind him aren’t hitting, there’s no guarantee of 1st to 3rd on a single, or 2nd to home. It’s much, much harder to score him. And it’s not as though the hitters behind him haven’t been hitting, either.

aside from Torres, almost nobody on the Giants goes 1B-3B on a GB single

Whiteside has a better shot of going 1B-3B on a single (such as yesterday) than Posey, but that’s not a good argument for benching Posey (or Burrell or Sandoval or Uribe or Sanchez)

Weewee, Johnson, Unit

One of your Giants players has a picture of his weewee (which isn"t so wee), on a national photography website. He came in as a pinch hitter in a game on May 7, and did not expect to get in the game. Therefore, he did not have on his protective cup or sliding shorts. He hit a grand slam, and was photographed rounding the bases, with the outline of Mr Happy in full view. I won’t say who it is, but you can have fun finding the picture. It really does exist.
