A Whole Lot of Stupidity About Belt
In an article entitled "Giants may not have room to promote Belt", the following pieces of poop are laid out:
• Bochy and Sabean don't want to remove anyone from the 40-man, and actually really want to make room for (wait for it) Dontrelle Willis.
• This:
Belt or any other hitting prospect would not play much with the Giants in a pennant race, Bochy said Friday."That's fair to assume because of our situation," he said. "We have a lot of outfielders and infielders. Edgar (Renteria) is real close to being ready by the first (of September). But you never rule anything out."
So Belt is being blocked by Renteria and Willis? WTF?
• Bochy is a big fat idiot:
Bochy said Belt could benefit from being a Giant in September the way Posey did last year, even though the catcher had only 17 at-bats.
"It was valuable, especially for him seeing what the game is about," Bochy said. "He got a little playing time, not much. When he came up this time, he had a sense of belonging, knowing what the game is about. I think that little cup of coffee helped him."

How to have their cake and eat it too
DFA Guillen, bring up Belt. I don’t care how well Guillen hits- he’s a statue in the OF and Ross is way more valuable.

I’ve only seen a couple games with Guillen in RF, but it seems like his bat will in no way make up for his horrible range in the OF. He is possibly the slowest outfielder I’ve ever watched. I would be so happy if they would DFA Guillen and play Ross more.

seriously. DFA Guillen.
They saw that Guillen hit .430 in a division series that one timewhich means that Bork will contiune to start him over Ross. Take away the temptation.

The orgin of it seems sketchy, but these answers were found here:
The consensus is that when casinos in Las Vegas were in a particularly competitive period they would vie for customers just as banks offer free toasters to people who open new accounts. Back then a chicken dinner in the casino business was priced at just under $2.00. In those days the most common bet was $2.00, and in an attempt to attract players to place bets, the stickman at roulette or craps would shout the phrase. In short, it was shilling for players at an underpopulated table by telling wandering innocents that they could win a chicken dinner by playing.
- Just found somebody who remembers that it was used in much the same way at The Aqueduct Racecourse in New York in 1954. The most common bet on a horse was two bucks and even a pretty bad payoff would provide you the price of the restaurant’s chicken dinner, priced on the menu at about a dollar. In either case, everyone seems to remember that the chicken dinners were not only the least expensive meals on the menus, but were uniformly awful.

I don't know...
It’s pretty awesome to have a guy like Guillen off the bench for pinch hitting and such. And with an outfield like Burrell/Torres/Huff/Scheirholtz/Rowand (I suppose) he shouldn’t be getting too much defensive playing time.
Despite the fact that I love him, Ishikawa might be the odd man out, considering we have Huff, Sandoval, and Posey who can play multiple positions and hit better.

i could kinda sorta be convinced to get in this line
Ishi does have a teensy bit of value as a late-inning defensive replacement, but it’s probably negligible.

Hmm lets see, Belt is hitting .360 could possibly be Minor League player of the year and Willis has a 13.5 ERA. and been dumped by 2 teams allready this year. Who do you want on your 40 man. Cry, I litterly cant wait till Boch and Sabs are gone!

They are just good enough to give their fans false hope, fill the seats and they are doing it with overpayed Vetrens to make up for their lack of developing positional players from their farm system. Maybe if Huff and Torres didnt have the year their having ownership would consider somthing broken. and in need of fixing, i just wish ownership expected more then the 5th or 6th best team in the National League.

He would have the largest impact if he gets a lot of playing time, it just won’t be a positive one.

Can he play in the outfield?
We could really use some depth, it’s a little thin at the corner OF positions.

If Renteria is actually healthy, I would say he would be the most impactful player down the stretch. Middle infield depth is short and he can still hit left-handed pitching very well. The outfield is crowded and I don’t have confidence in Bork playing Belt. His comments about Posey reinforce his lack of logic.

Plus I doubt Belt would be very good even if he got PT. Renteria’s gotten hot for stretches, and I have more confidence in his ability to turn it on for a few games (especially since he seems to do so after coming back from injury) than Belt making a serious ML impact after starting the season in SJ. Of course, it’s SSS, so whatever happens will be written off as a fluke if Belt sucks or Rent hits.

It would be a limited number of PA’s, and I don’t foresee either player starting every day. I don’t doubt Belt’s ability to hit in the big leagues though, he has started off strong at at every level in the minors. With better defense and a solid walk rate compared to Guillen, he could hit .250 and still be a clear upgrade. While Bochy loves his vets, he may fall in love with a lefty to matchup against right-handed pitching.
The last sentence is a joke, I don’t actually believe that.

Maybe I am failing at reading comprehension, but
the only thing about Willis in this article is one little line from Hank, “If the Giants want to promote Dontrelle Willis, that would require another 40-man spot.” I think he was just making the point that they would need TWO spots on the 40 man to promote him and Belt, not just one. Nothing even remotely close to:
• Bochy and Sabean don’t want to remove anyone from the 40-man, and actually really want to make room for (wait for it) Dontrelle Willis.
wait, so you don’t read “if the Giants want to promote Dontelle Willis…” as “the Giants have a burning desire to immediately promote Dontrelle Willis and have him pitch every day in San Francisco”

I think they’re hanging onto Hinshaw soley because of the fact that he’s a lefty with velocity. It might be fools gold, but if he puts it together, he’d be worth something.

You losers who want Belt to be brought up this season even though the Giants roster is already stacked, might get your wish after all. If the Giants start tanking, they’ll have plenty of reason to bring up young and unproven talent as they’ll be naturally looking towards next season.

Relative to every other national league team, I woluld say they now have superior depth. They have, without necessarily Sabean’s intent, proven quality players on the bench.
Cody Ross 2009: 24 HR 90 RBI
Jose Guillen 2008 (last full year of play): 20 HR 97 RBI
Mike Fontenot currently batting .308 in 26 at bats for the Giants, .287 for the season
Travis Ishikawa is one of the best pinch hitters in the game
Brandon Belt has no big league experience so why dislodge one of these guys for the sake of some at bats from him at the end of the season.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
I'm not big on bringing up Belt...
Has anyone looked at what’s happened since his last callup?
1-for-12 with four walks and four strikeouts (as of mid-game Saturday). And he was spurting out a bit in Richmond, too.
I’ll see tomorrow, but dude could be getting tired. This is his first EVER fall playing ball. He didn’t even play in-season last year, he just got some time in instructs. It wouldn’t be surprising. Even if he isn’t, he isn’t exactly pounding the ball in Triple-A, and he’s playing in a good offensive park.
A couple of weeks of sporadic playing time in the bigs won’t help him much. Sure, they won’t hurt them, but why give away a player for nothing when it won’t help either?
I’d be just as good to let him get a couple of weeks home with family to rest and relax before the AFL or instructional league.

They can hurt him if he gets Poseyed. Calling him up in September will just mean he sits out an extra month to start 2011.

Then I wouldn't worry about it
I don’t see an overwhelming reason to think he’s ready to start next season in the bigs, anyway. Maybe mid-season, but I think both of us have been around long enough to know that one great season, especially when a significant part was at High-A.

I don't think it's particularly likely.
But it’s likely enough that it’s not worth it for him to get 10 PA in September (which is about how many he’ll get stuck with Huff, Ishikawa Guillen, Burrell, Ross, Rowand, Schierholtz, possibly Pill, and Sandoval when one of the middle infielders gets a start at third).

Lingering injury?

Possibly...
…but it’s not that, I’d guess. The only injury we know of that’s recent is his wrist, and he did have a good enough streak to not suspect it’s lingering.
Of course, that’s from the stats.
I’ll be in Fresno tomorrow, and I’ll report what I see on him. I’ll be watching him very closely.

I don't think he should be brought up
But the reasoning the FO is using is just stupid.
"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow
Does it?
This sounds like the reasoning of a writer, rather than the front office. The only two quotes directly from the Giants boil down to: “There’s so many guys, he’s not likely to get playing time,” and “He’d benefit from sitting on the bench.”
That latter sounds like more of a reason to bring him up or not.
Even if the 40-man roster bit is front office reasoning (which I admit, I think it is), I don’t think it’s stupid. Being opposed to giving up any decent player for nothing, even a bench/utility guy, isn’t stupid to me. It’s prudent.

I was more referring to the sitting on the bench part
Obviously giving up a decent player for nothing wouldn’t be smart. Although considering they did it with Downs, I wouldn’t be shocked if they do it again.
I could think of a couple guys that have great cases to be taken off the 40-man though: Velez, Guillen.
Unless Belt is brought up to play everyday (which isn’t a good idea anyways), there’s no reason to start his arbitration clock in September.
"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow
I don’t see how the reasoning is stupid. There’s simply no way around this one fact: putting him on the 40 man means giving away some other player for free. I don’t care what kind of dead wood people (including myself) may think we have on the 40 man right now, I don’t see how any rational cost/benefit analysis of the situation says that getting Belt two weeks of bench time on a major league bench is worth giving away some other player for nothing. I just don’t.
