Post-game thread: Lincecum loses fourth straight
Last year, this site was a bitter, angry lot. Some of the glass-half-full types would chide us. The Giants were contenders, they'd chide -- those chiding bastards -- isn't that enough to make you happy? And the stock response was, no, we wasted a historic performance from our pitching staff. Bah and/or flimshaw, the chiders would chide. Everybody's coming back! It will be just as fantastic next year!
See, this is what happens. Things. Things happen. While I'm about 50% less worried about Lincecum than it seems most people are, it's pretty clear he's not the same Lincecum. He was in the conversation for the best pitcher in the universe title last year, but he wasn't close to the best pitcher in today's game.
Things happen. Last year was an amazing pitching performance by the entire staff, but the offense was too wretched to help. This year, the Giants are hitting just a little bit more, but the pitching staff isn't as stellar. They're still good, mind you, just not the once-in-a-generation staff from last year. That's why we were so bitter last season. It felt like this kind of season was coming.
Now go chide someone else. We're bitter today, too.

And damnit, that wasn't that bad of an idea
I think I advocated something like Neal and C prospects for Berkman? But the Astros actually gave him up for less, so I suppose I misjudged the market.
At the trade deadline, Berkman was on an upswing, and he would have been a damn better acquisition than Jose Guillen. Of course, he’s struggled since the trade, but who knows why.
"Baseball is a game filled with moments of anticipation. The ones who can keep their calm while heading in to a storm can make their mark on a season. And what happens in those moments is what turns mere men… in to Giants."

I guess if the Giants had traded Neal for him, we wouldn’t have known that he could have been had for so much less, but it was a pretty bad idea.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
Right, yeah
I guess I would say this: In hindsight, Neal would have been too much to offer…
But I stand by the idea that he would have been a good player to target. Long history of success, but in a down year, playing for a team that didn’t want to pay for him.

At varying times it was for both
I think I suggested Jonathan and Joseph for both of them and cash? Something like that. It definitely involved Jonathan because I thought he’d be replaced by Oswalt.
Hell though, I wanted Oswalt all year. Was bummed he went to Philly.

I might have done a +1 reply to agree with Jp’s statement above… but I wouldn’t recommend it to turn it green. Usually a rec [on this board anyway] is for something that is like above and beyond just agreeing. It’s to draw attention to a unique, thought provoking or insightful post.

click “actions” at the bottom of any post and you’ll get 2 options – rec or ‘flag’
you know what rec means – flag is to bring something inappropriate to the attention of the moderators (but only if they’re trusted!)

Nah
Flags aren’t visible to anyone except the moderators – regular posters won’t even know you’ve flagged something, much less turn something green.
What probably happened is that people rec’d the post as a joke.

I think flags turn it red for mods if it’s flagged by enough people, but MCCers rarely flag things often enough for that to happen.

I guess I'd just like to apologize a bit.
I know some people were pissed at me today, and it wasn’t my intention to cause anger. I enjoy this site, and have fun posting here as part of the community, even if my heart doesn’t like 100% with the Giants.
Hopefully we get a good game by both teams tomorrow, and then I can go back to (only) being a Giants fan on these boards for the rest of the season, and (hopefully) playoffs.
I think the GameThread and the rest of the site are different animals. Different chemicals floating around the brain leading to harsher words.

Which is understandable.
It’s hard for a fan of any team to be civil when they witness emotional outbursts disparaging the team/players they enjoy watching play baseball. I tried to keep things friendly, but there was bad timing with some of my negativity regarding the Cardinals lineup, and a rather unexpected offensive outburst.
Ah well, hopefully there are no hard feelings, I’ll probably be around tomorrow to watch the game, as well.
Excuses are…..

Damn
I missed yesterday’s game but managed to watch the entire game today? What’s wrong with me.
Mike Adams has thrown over to first (where Rickie Weeks is) maybe a dozen times now. And then they pitched out. And then another throw-over where Weeks nearly got picked off… the Padres are fucking obnoxious even when the Giants aren’t losing to them.
While I am a more half-full glass sort of fellow, I don’t really chide much. If I had, I probably would have agreed that we were wasting an historic season – but I would’ve pointed to the defense as the unlikely repeatable in that season.
Defense can’t explain Timmy’s year, but I do think we’re more than a bit worse off this year in that regard. I almost think it’s worth it, just to have more than one guy in the lineup who can hit the ball out of the infield.
I'm as tall as Mel - why can't I hit 500 home runs?
See, this is what happens. Things. Things happen.
I’ve done extensive research and feel I can safely confirm that this is true. It’s with this in mind, though, that one hopes for the best in the next month and a half. If a guy gets “off track” without a clearly apparent cause, he may just as well hop back on it without a drastic change or a significant amount of time passing.
I’m not trying to put forward an attitude of great optimism here, about Lincecum specifically or the team in general—I’m not feelin’ it, either, at the moment. But…well, things happen.
You’ve researched things happening? I can see that.

FWIW, I think Timmy's slowly improving.
He got rocked his last few starts, had a lovely first and then got bombed last outing, and this time it was really the fifth that gave him trouble. Having a one hitter that was a homer to Randy Winn is not shitty pitching. Not what we’ve come to expect from him, or even any staff ace, but if he keeps improving like this, we’ll see him do a complete game shutout in…er…March!

Agreed, and his postgame comments suggest this as well. I think he was around the zone more, for better or for worse – at least he didn’t have the walks as much but giving up the hits to Winn and Feliz were clearly “get it in pitches” when he didn’t have to.
Part of it may have been he didn’t really have a feel for his changeup today (his first one sailed up and in and didn’t break at all), but that’s just my conjecture.
Got some bad breaks on some balls, albeit hard hit, but if we had some better defenders, who knows, the result could have been different. Still tempering any optimism though seeing as that Cardinals lineup today was pretty weaksauce, and was hoping to see a strong confidence-building start tonight.
This is mostly how it seemed to me. The changeup was definitely lacking, and that’s where he gets a lot of his swings-and-misses. And while he was hitting his target more, he was also threw a lot of pitches way out of the strike zone, where even Feliz wouldn’t chase them. He looked better tonight than in the last couple starts, but still a long way away from how he looked in April. Hopefully he’ll continue to improve until he’s an ace again.

I don’t think today was a depressing Tim outing. I think this was an iffy Tim outing that would have seemed like a normal iffy Tim outing last year.

So on this 49er forum I post on, someone posed a question on who would you start if you had a must win (say 1 game playoff) game for the Giants to win. This poster said even with his struggles he would take Lincecum. I said I’d take Lincecum last of the 5 SP’s we have, and I might do that even if he was normal Timmy.
Timmy has seems to wilt under certain pressures and he also can’t handle the heat (temp) sometimes. I also think he’s the most easily rattled of our 5 starters. He gets bothered by blown calls or bloop hits, errors etc more than any of the starters we have. In essence, he lets his emotions get the best of him and it effects his game at times. Which, in a must win game, I wouldn’t want to have to worry about.
I said I would slot Sanchez after Tim, in order of least to most likely to select for my starter, as Sanchez is inconsistent. While I love his no-hit type stuff and ability to be a shutdown guy at times, I’d also worry that he might lose his arm slot in a must win game and be too ineffective or not eat up enough quality innings to make an impact. I’d still take him over Timmy though if I had to choose between the two.
Bumgarner I’d slot third, as he has an “Fuck You!” attitude towards hitters and has a lot of poise to him, a lot for a rookie. He reminds me of Noah Lowry in this regard, as he pitches like a 10 year veteran and not a that or a rookie. It’s hard to rattle him and he will fight you to the death on the mound. Great competitive spirit, and he also has very good command of his pitches and pounds the strike zone, which I would find to be ideal in a must win game. He’s almost assured to give you 6 to 7 quality innings and give your team a chance of winning an important game.
Zito or Cain, I would put in slot #1, as Zito may have a slight edge in that he’s more experienced and has a good record in playoff/big games. Cain, I feel is just as poised and can easily handle the burden of being the stopper if given the ball. Plus, it seems like if given the chance he would shine as the baseball gods owe him some kind of glory after years of living in obscurity due to poor run support which makes people think he can’t win.
So what say the McCoven? Sorry for the rambling post, but I thought it make for an interesting convo in this thread.
Interesting Idea
I’d take Matt Cain, no doubt in my mind. He has the highest QS% on the rotation (and it’s tied for 5th highest in the league).
"Baseball is a game filled with moments of anticipation. The ones who can keep their calm while heading in to a storm can make their mark on a season. And what happens in those moments is what turns mere men… in to Giants."

I’d put Lincecum Game 1 simply because you’re going to be facing a Halladay/Hudson/Wainwright, so chances aren’t very good anyways.
Doesn’t matter though since if Lincecum doesn’t get back on track there will be no postseason for the Giants.
"There was hatred. And they had some hatred. And then there was some more hatred. And then the Giants won. Woo hoo!" - Mike Krukow
Yeah, Cain or Zito 1st.
Timmy I dunno, he seems to get the nerves… All-Star Game, Opening Day, he doesn’t seem to pitch well, or as well as you’d like him to in those situations. At least Zito’s been there before. I guess Cain hasn’t had that many opportunities, but you just kind of assume he’d be okay.
He pitched fine this year on Opening Day
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
This year, but last year not so much, if I recall correctly, which I probably don’t since I’m dead tired… he didn’t do so well at his 2nd All Star game either pffft or the 1st. Seems like he needs to experience something once to get a feel for it, there’s a third example I’ve used in the past to illustrate this point and now I can’t recall what it is/was.
He sometimes appears to have a difficult time with the adrenaline rush. Or maybe it’s just pregame festivities that take him out of his usual whatchacallit ? routine…
I don’t think there’s any way you can read anything into his opening day and all star starts.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
Especially since over the course of his career
What would be considered “high pressure situations” are, like, 3 starts. 2 opening day, 1 all star appearance. That’s not a good sample.

But it’s insane to pick any of the lefties over Lincecum, especially Zito. I mean, hello people? The same Zito who’s sporting an inferior FIP and tRA to Lincecum and who has been terribly worse than Lincecum since 2007? Really?

but as I’ve said elsewhere, until the playoffs, what does #1 Pitcher mean? Nothing, I think. Maybe the pitchers themselves get off on it like an alpha dog thing, but what does it matter except when a 5th starter can be skipped on occasion?

Did everyone really think Lincecum was that bad today?
He looked much better to me – hitting his spots for the most part, good break, and even some regained velocity. In the end, he got screwed with some bad defense and an unlucky few hits. What was I missing that made this outing as awful as people are describing it?

No, when compared to his recent outings, I believe he’s making progress. As Grant stated previously up in the thread. This was more like one of his iffy outings of last year. I think if you just look at the final line, it does not paint a pretty picture. But if you look at how he pitched each inning, you would come away seeing lots of positives.

if Timmy did not fall apart this year, we would be ahead in the wild card and neck and neck with the pads.
If your ace loses 4 in a row, and has become the worst era out of your starters, it looks now as if timmy is our number 5 starter. and he cannot beat other aces, and has less than a 50% chance of beating other teams fifth starters.

Letters and numbers
One thing I am learning about the Giants is that they don’t have their names on the home uniforms, which makes it easier for a player traded to get a jersey right away, but why are the numbers different sizes on different uniforms? Ex. – Aubrey Huff has little numbers on his back, while other guys also with two-digit numbers have larger ones.
So yea, watching the little league world series was way more fun

They were berating Panda, but also the umps saying that they should have called the infield fly rule. I’m sure the neighbors appreciated me yelling at the radio, at 10 pm, “there was only one runner on, no force at third…no infield fly rule!!”
…and you people get paid to be on the radio sharing your “knowledge” Ugh

Our pitching this year is really, really good
I don’t think it’s all that much worse than last year. All of our starters have ERAs in the mid-threes. How many other teams in baseball can say that? Don’t sleep on the bullpen, either. Wilson, Romo and Casilla have been lights-out. Mota, Runzler, Ray and Lopez are solid. Batista blew, but you got to admit we’ve got a pretty sick staff.
Mota blows
But at least he was legit for the 2 months of the season.

Last year the team ERA+ was 123. So far this year it’s 121. So… yeah… I guess you’re right.

I think it’s just more balanced. Zito’s been much better. Cain could have his best season of his career yet, as well as Sanchez. And Bumgarner has been fantastic for a #5 starter. So spots in the rotation have improved, while the 1 is still good but taken a serious step back.
And the bullpen: Romo and Wilson are awesome, and the rest is frustrating but still pretty good for middle relief (since MR typically suck anyways).
If you want to summarize our pitching, it’s this simple. They strike out more than anyone in baseball. They also walk more than anyone in baseball.

I was at the game...
The tobias family just completed a 3-games-in-3-days road trip. I was in Chicago already, and my wife drove the kids out from Southern California(!) to join me at the end of my conference here. We saw Cubs-Pods at Wrigley on Thursday, Brewers-Pods at Miller Park on Friday, and Giants-Cards at Busch last night. Sat in the very top row, right behind home plate.
I know we’re all looking for hope and silver linings here, but I have to say I wasn’t that impressed with Timmy’s outing. I mean, sure it was better, and I was pleased to see his velocity up a little, and also impressed that his strikes to balls ratio started out very good. Still, for me, last night didn’t really resemble what we’ve come to expect from Lincecum and what I think we’re hoping he’ll get back to: dominating mid-to-upper-90’s stuff with lots of movement, swing-throughs and K’s.
Last night, for the first three innings, Timmy was hitting spots better, keeping the ball down and getting mostly ground ball outs (6 ground ball outs, 1 pop up, 1 K, 1 sac bunt). It was effective enough, but watching the game, my sons and I (even my oldest, who often chides me for being overly pessimistic) felt like it was just a matter of time before the Cards’ bats would get the best of Timmy. Sure enough, in the fourth, the Cards started hitting the ball in the air and they started hitting the ball hard (7 balls in the air, 3 ground balls—all hard hit and all base hits, 2 K’s of hitters, and 1 K of pitcher attempting to bunt).
Maybe it’s because I’m too pessimistic, or maybe it’s because I’m in the “Show-Me State”, but I think I’m going to wait until Timmy strings together 2 or 3 truly good outings before I stop worrying and start feeling better.

I understand what you’re saying here, but during the 2008-May 15, 2010 stretch you’ve shown here, he did not really have mid-to-upper-90’s stuff.

Yes he did
Not all the time, but on occasion, for sure. His velocity has dropped from ‘08 (when I think it’s fair to say his fastball did tend to run mid-to-high 90’s) to ’09, and again from ’09 to this season.
I don’t know. Maybe it’s not even realistic to hope for a return to that type of velocity and dominance. What Timmy did during 2008 and 2009 was, well, freakish.
