Anticipating September

One of baseball's loopiest and most charming rules is the September call-up, where, in the middle of pennant races, roster rules change.  The moral rigor imposed by hard roster choices--do we carry 12 pitchers or 13, do we need a third catcher or a sixth infielder. or another LOOGY--vanishes into laissez-faire profligacy.  It's sort of a fun tradition.

It also has a dark side.  You think games managed by Tony LaRussa are unbearable when he has 12 pitchers to deal with?  Give him 18 and watch the paint dry.  Plus the September call-up rule suggests the contempt in which MLB holds their minor leagues.  Hey, AAA fans, you've been supporting your team, and they made the playoffs!  Good for you!  Now we're taking your best three hitters in case we need them to pinch-hit once a week.

Still, September is a time when a few guys get to sneak into the Baseball Encyclopedia who otherwise wouldn't--I'm looking at you, Conor Gillaspie!  So there's that.  So who will be the Giants' call-ups?  What roster moves will we make?  Which should we make?

Only players on the 40-man can be called up.  So looking at our 40-man, some obvious moves suggest themselves.  We need infield depth, so I expect to see Burriss and Rohlinger up, maybe also Downs, and of course Renteria, when he's healthy. The FO may wait until September to bring back Runzler, and we also don't have anyone who could make an emergency start if needed, so probably either Pucetas or Sosa, maybe both.  I think we'll see Joaquin too, and Ramirez.

Brandon Belt?  He's not on the 40-man, but he's also our best prospect, and he's generated a lot of noise from organization-puppet Chris Haft.  Who would they DFA?  The obvious choice seems to me Alex Hinshaw.  His job on the 40-man is probably best described as LOOGY insurance.  He's the guy you call up if Runzler or Affeldt get hurt.  Except they did get hurt, and rather than bring up the guy whose entire job description . . . sorry, it's too painful. He's been awful.. He's issued an astounding 32 walks in 47 innings.  He's a lefty with a live fastball and no command.  He's a replacement-level player who wasn't good enough to be considered when we needed a replacement player with his exact skill set.  No thanks.

Who else?  There are some intriguing names on the 40-man.  Thomas NealFrancisco PegueroBrett Pill.   But what we really need, seems to me, is a third catcher.  We only have two on the 40-man.  What do you think of DFAing Velez and bringing up Jackson Williams?  He's supposed to be brilliant defensively, and isn't hitting much worse than Steve Holm.  Or, of course, we could also just add Holm.  So what think you?

Holm, Downs, Burriss, Rohlinger, Runzler, Pucetas. I hope they DFA Hinshaw and replace him with Belt, but I’m not optimistic.

I thought Downs is out for the year.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

I would like to see

Downs, Rohlinger, Burriss, Holm, Pucetas, Hacker and Belt with Velez and Hinshaw DFA’d replaced by Belt and Hacker.

Neal is currently not on 40

so he would have to be added. I got a feeling that Jackson Williams will be added. It also seems like they may be stretching out Waldis Joaquin in Fresno to fill a long relief / emergency starter role. Also, Chris Ray will be added.

Prediction

Two waves of callups, one on Sept 1 and the second after Fresno is eliminated:
First wave – Runzler, Ray, Renteria, Williams, Velez
Second wave – Burriss, Joaquin, Rohlinger, Downs, Belt
Hinshaw will be DFA’d and somebody will do 60 day dl.

Fantastic.

Because another team would totally take Jackson Williams in the rule 5 draft.

Neal is Rule 5 eligible so he should just come up this september

I don’t know why Pill is still on the 40 man. I imagine DTrain will replace Hinshaw. Hacker should replace Pucetas and I could see JAX replacing Ford

I have a feeling they’ll bring up less players than usual this year to make up for the unexpected addition of Ross to their payroll. Sabes has always been pretty open that financial considerations factor into their September call ups. If there’s not a specific role for a guy to fill they’re not coming up. They’ll be a couple pitchers, the return of injured players, and probably Burriss and Velez, but I wouldn’t be suprised if that’s all.

I wish that was a joke

I came, I saw, I told bad jokes and left.

I wouldn’t mind a Neal callup, but I think Belt shouldn’t be with the team in September. We’ve got plenty of first basemen and he probably wouldn’t play regularly. Personally, I like the guys we’ve got now, and I’d rather have some backup players; I kind of doubt we’ve got anyone that could really impact the team like last year anyway.

Ain't no Posey like a Buster Posey cause a Buster Posey don't stop...hitting.

Cody Ross impact?

How does being awarded Cody Ross impact all this? Are the Giants obligated to put him on the 40 man roster having claimed him?

Yes, I believe they will and a got a feeling that this is at the expense of Nate Schierholtz.

by nelson95 on Aug 22, 2010 3:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Really, other than figuring out a quick iffy DL stint for an OF, I can’t see another way out the fix other than DFA Nate. I mean they could chuck Guillen, but pretty obviously that’s not happening. I suppose they could DFA Travis, but I’m guessing his PH numbers will save him. And really Nate’s been hitting like a pitcher for a while now, so the inevitable release was coming his way sooner or later.

I think

Nate will go on the DL with a phantom injury and miraculously come back when rosters expand in 10 days.

Still have to get Ross on the 40 man roster

The 15 day DL for Schierholtz only fixes the 25 man roster issue.
