Krukow: Posey Tipping Pitches
Great post by Bruce Jenkins (seriously).
Make sure to read the whole thing to hear the rest of Kruk's take, but here's a snippet:
When Raul Ibanez tripled off reliever Jeremy Affeldt in the seventh inning last night, scoring Chase Utley from second base for a 6-2 lead, Mike Krukow told his audience that "Posey tipped that pitch." You don't hear such things from other analysts, particularly the shameless "homers" befouling so many broadcast booths, but Krukow is a former catcher who plays it straight, and he can't stand to watch shoddy fundamentals.
"What happened there," Krukow said this morning in Philadelphia, "it was a 3-2 count, and Posey shook his head as Affeldt looked in for the sign. When a catcher does that, he's not shaking off a pitch. He just wants to have the pitcher shake HIS head -- like he's going to get inside the hitter's head. Well, 99 times out of 100, a fastball is coming. We (in the booth) figured Utley relayed the pitch to Ibanez. He'd been late on Affeldt's fastball the whole at-bat, but he jumped all over that one."

May 12, 2010:
“The Phillies insisted Wednesday they weren’t trying to steal signs when bullpen coach Mick Billmeyer was caught on camera peering through binoculars from the bullpen bench at Coors Field earlier this week.
FSN Rocky Mountain, the flagship broadcaster of the Colorado Rockies, showed Billmeyer using the binoculars to peer in on Colorado catcher Miguel Olivo while the Phillies were at bat in the top of the second inning.
It also showed a quick image of Phillies center fielder Shane Victorino in the dugout on the bullpen phone in the top of the second.
While sign-stealing is something all teams try to do, using electronic equipment, enhanced devices and technology is not allowed in baseball.
It’s not the first time accusations of cheating have been lobbed at the Phillies. The Mets accused the Phillies of stealing signs through a center-field camera in 2007, and the Boston Red Sox leveled charges against them in 2008.
During the World Series last year, former Phillies manager Larry Bowa said Philadelphia has a reputation for stealing signs.
Bowa, now the Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach, told Philadelphia radio station ESPN 950 there were rumors of the Phillies using a center field camera to swipe signs.
“There’s rumors going around that when you play the Phillies, there’s a camera somewhere or bullpen people are giving signs,” Bowa said at the time. “And catchers are constantly changing signs. That’s the rumor. Now, is it proven? No.”
The Rockies noticed Billmeyer using the binoculars from his perch in center field in the top of the first inning Monday night and asked FSN to zoom in on the visitor’s bullpen.
Armed with evidence, Rockies manager Jim Tracy brought it to the attention of crew chief Jerry Crawford, who spoke with Manuel between the first and second innings of that game.
The video of Billmeyer showed him peering through the binoculars, then quickly pulling them down."
It relates to Philly sign stealing, not anything about Posey. Though, his youth and relative inexperience is possibly a concern when playing the Phillies in their ball park.
The bottom of the eighth in the first game seemed suspicious to me.
Anybody else think so?
There was no allegation of sign stealing. Just Kruk pointing out how Posey’s gestures would tip off anybody in the stadium.
So, there’s that. You can put your tin foil hat away for a little while.
I DON'T BELIEVE YOU
I tweet (more often than I blarg).
The runner on 2nd stealing signs is part of the game. The binoculars part is not. This is not really relevant.

He was a catcher in high school or college, wasn’t he?

he was drafted as a catcher out of high school
but he went to pitch at Cal Poly and was drafted by the cubs as a pitcher then.

LOL KRUK!!
Posey committed another catcher’s sin last night, Krukow said, when he slapped the ground with his glove before a pitch, indicating he wanted something down low in the dirt. “Now, why would you do that?” Krukow said.
Didn’t Molina do this? Don’t 90 out of 100 catchers do this? Ugh. I like Kruk and all, but he’s intolerable sometimes.

Yeah, I see the ground slap a lot. I’ve even seen it as a ruse.

Yorvit did this against the Giants. He also stands when he wants the pitch high out of the zone. Somehow this doesn’t bother Krukow.

I don’t see why either of Kruk’s concerns aren’t legitimate. 90 out of 100 catchers also suck. Posey’s a rookie; he’s going to be prone to some mistakes as he learns. I don’t think Kruk is questioning Posey’s talent or implying something about him vs. Molina.

The point, I believe, is that Kruk is acting like, and being brandished as, some world beater catcher. His comments are presented as if he was a very successful catcher, which he wasn’t obviously since he got moved off the position. I don’t feel, personally, that Kruk should be making these comments as he isn’t qualified, again just my opinion.
I'm a better person now.
The things he's mentioning have absolutely nothing to do with his own catching experience.
Everyone on the field is watching to see if the catcher (and pitcher) are tipping pitches, you don’t have to be a catcher (or pitcher) to identify that issue. You don’t even have to be a baseball player to spot that, though it probably helps.

Fair enough, and I definitely used the wrong words. Kruk, just like everyone else, is entitled to his opinion and if that opinion is that Posey is tipping pitches that’s fine with me. My point is more of how the comments are being presented than anything else. The part about him being a “former catcher” is what bugs me since he is presenting these statements as a former major league pitcher turned analysts, seeing as he was never a catcher at the highest level. I’m not sure if I’m making my thoughts clear or not, but there they are.
I'm a better person now.
Jenkins wrote it, not Krukow.
Sport writers love their specious appeals to authority (or is it appeals to specious authority?).

You're right.
He was only a MLB pitcher for years and not a catcher, and should therefore not be thought of as an expert in signs going from catcher to pitcher.

His concerns are legitimate, but....
He shouldn’t act all high-handed about Posey on a team that employs defensive liabilities like Sandoval, Guillen and formerly Bengie Molina. I would have been okay with it, if he gone up in arms about Molina not being able to get down on balls in the dirt that lead to all of those passed balls/wild pitches towards the end of his Giants tenure.
But I think it’s the good with the bad. The good is that Krukow (and Kuiper) both offer a lot of insight being former major league players, however the bad is that they also bring some of the same biases towards young players that’s prevalent in the big league’s. Posey made a mistake, but have you noticed how much less people are running on the Giants since he took over?

Didn’t Molina do this? Don’t 90 out of 100 catchers do this?
That is pretty much the exact point Krukow is trying to make
“I’m not trying to single out Posey at all. You see this all over the big leagues. I see guys that are just outright cartoons back there. It’s an aspect of the catching position that has eroded over the years, and it’s costly.”

Well, if Posey was ever going to make that mistake
good thing he did it in a game that the Giants had already lost

Ehh
I bet the league average for Fastballs in a 3-2 count is around 75%, so it’s hardly a shocker he’d know one is coming anyway.
Bruce Jenkins?
Must be hard to dig deep and find the negatives about a rookie catcher who is hitting .340 and carrying the offense on his back. But leave it to Brucie to fish it out, put spin on it, and look like a jackass in another one of his articles.
Did Brucie mention Molina’s passed balls or his constant call for the fastball in critical at-bats? Nope. Just trying to find anything he can to point out a negative in Posey’s play.
Bruce jenkins, go f*ck yourself.

These are just two off-the-cuff comments made during a live broadcast. Not everything Krukow says is going to be right on the money; but even so, I don’t have any problems with either of these comments. They’re mildly thought-provoking. Having been an expat Giants fan who was forced to watch several years of Giants road games called by opponent broadcasters (before MLB.TV provided both feeds), I can honestly say Krukow is one of the best color guys in the business. The only guy who comes to mind that is unquestionably as good or better, off the top of my head, is Don Sutton. (I imagine there are a couple others.)
Now, as to the comments themselves: these ARE things that Posey could resolve. Or they’re at least things that he could at least be cognizant of so that he can use them as dekes from time to time to keep hitters guessing. Is it critical that he do so? No. Would it help? Perhaps. If he wants to give some thought to this and make slight alterations in his game — which seems in keeping with his general attitude towards improving himself — fine. And if not, so be it.
I’ve never understood the anti-Krukow sentiments I sometimes hear from Giants fans. His job is to provide insight into a complex game that will inform and entertain everyone from a ten-year old watching his first season to the most grizzled McCoven SABR member, and he has to do it live and off-the-cuff over 150 times per year. He’s waaaaay better than most of the people in his industry, and he still comes up with things every once in awhile that are useful and interesting even to someone who’s listened to at least a thousand of his broadcasts. (The umpire scouting reports, for example — always an interesting storyline to bear in mind as a game unfolds.)
Pick on Jenkins if you need to vent — just about anyone with a good grasp of the English language would do a better job than him if put in his place. But let’s not conflate Krukow’s off-the-cuff musings with the premeditated journalistic diarrhea Jenkins sprays every day or two.

I agree with this sentiment. The criticism I think is meant to be constructive, as this is something that could be fixed to make Posey’s game better. And if Kruk is right and it helps improve Posey’s game, then that’s great. If Kruk is wrong, then very little harm is done. And besides, I’ve heard all the announcers pretty regularly gushing about how great Posey has been so far and how much difference he’s made on this team. Tempering that with a little criticism now and then is a good thing overall.
Osiris, Lord of the Dead, and relief pitcher for the Fresno Grizzlies.
Krukow on KNBR this morning.
Looks like Krukow was just mentioning the alleged tipped pitch against Werth as a small negative. He didn’t address the article with Murphy, but Murphy asked him if he thinks the Giants rotation problems lately are Posey’s fault and Krukow said it was a crock. He thinks that Posey is damned good most of the time behind the plate and that he is going to be an absolute stud for years to come. Also likes how Posey cares about his pitchers and that you don’t see that all the time with young hitting Catchers (cough, AJ Pierzynski, cough).
Methinks the Jenkins article had a wee bit of Sensationalism.
