Derrek Lee to the Braves?
The subtitle to this fanshot is:
Brian Sabean Proves What An Idiot He Is Once Again
Fresh of the inexplicable Jose Guillen trade comes rumors that the Atlanta Braves might be close to trading for Derrek Lee. I wonder if BS realizes that his team is in a pennent race against the Phillies and Braves too? One of those 2 teams is likely to be the wildcard winner if the Giants don't start playing better.
Upon seeing Lee's name on the waiver wire, any rational baseball man would think, "Gee, I better put a claim in on him because the Braves and Phillies could use him to better their team - I better put in a claim for the Giants so we can block him form getting to those teams."
Not to mention that Lee would be a much better fit on the Giants than Guillen ever will be. Worse case the Giants would be stuck paying Lee the remaining $3.4MM on his contract
The Braves are close to trading for Derrek Lee, according to David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com. Lee, who vetoed a deal to the Angels last month, must approve any trade the Cubs propose. Sources close to Lee told Kaplan that the first baseman would likely approve a deal to Atlanta. Kaplan's sources say the trade would be a salary dump and is near completion. The Cubs owe Lee $3.4MM between now and the end of the season, when he hits free agency. The 34-year-old has a .251/.335/.416 line in 475 plate appearances and projects to be a Type B free agent this offseason.

To clarify, the Giants have a superior waiver claim than the Phillies and Braves. If they put a claim on Lee then there would be no way that the Brave or Phillies could get him. If no team with a superior claim than the Giants claimed Lee then 3 things woud happen:
1. The Giants tell the Cubs they won’t give them any players for Lee, so the Cubs pull him off waivers and nobody gets him.
2. The Giants tell the Cubs they won’t give them any players for Lee, so the Cubs send him to the Giants for nobody. The Giants assume Lee’s remainiing contract obligations.
3.The Giants work out a trade with the Cubs. It would only be a fringe prospect at best, because Lee is a FA at the end of the season and the Cubs just want to dump his salary now. They wouldn’t be getting any comp pick for him once he leaves as a FA, because they don’t dare offer him arbitration.

To further clarify
They wouldn’t be getting any comp pick for him once he leaves as a FA, because they don’t dare offer him arbitration.
The “they” in this sentence refers to the Cubs. They would be afraid to offer Lee arb, because the odds of him accepting seems high due to his previous protestations on how much he loves Chicago.

Subject Line
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck fuckity fuck fuck. Fuck you Brian Sabean and the horse you rode in on.
That is all I have to say on this matter at this time.
So optimistic I fart sunshine and rainbows.
Giants Front Office....Torture!
Meh
If the claim was made yesterday, then the Braves had the superior waiver claim., right? Or is that incorrect? I hate the waiver process.

No
The specific factor for Lee is the overall W-L record. Except for possibly 1 or 2 days in the first week of August, the Giants haven’t had a better record than the Braves since way back in April or May.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
From August 1st – 4th and on the 6th, the Giants had a better record than the Braves.
However, the claim process period (no less than 72 hours, probably less) and the 48-hour negotiating period means this claim didn’t happen then. Probably after the Guillen trade. The team probably got claim-itchy after that, especially if they were afraid the Cubs would just let Lee go for nothing, costing the team a DFA’d player and further problems in playing time. A team going up for sale makes that a real, though still not probable, possibility.

Buster Olney reported yesterday that the Giants have been putting in waiver claims on third basemen to block them going to the Braves, ever since Chipper went down. He must have forgotten that Glaus used to be a third baseman. Nice work, Sabes!!!

Mlbtraderumors says Glaus “isn’t considered an option at the hot corner anymore.” I assume the Braves would drop him if they got Lee, and then Sabean would grab him and his horribly slumping bat
I would love for them to put Glaus at 3B
that would be very comical (unfortunately it probably wouldn’t even last an entire game)

Also, I bet Lee passed through waivers long before Chipper went down.

Yeah, that’s possible. The Cubs may have sent him through waivers back when the Giants didn’t have higher priority than the Braves.

Dammit
Type B free agent too. Might be expensive to keep if he accepted, but he wouldn’t be a bad one-year stopgap til Belt arrives
Meh, dude is old and rickety. Better than Guillen? Yes. Does that say much? No.

It says our GM is an idiot for getting Guillen.

Yeah, but I just don’t think that Lee will do much.

Disagree with you there
I think Lee will go on a tear if he gets to Atlanta or the Phillies. He’s still got plenty of gas in the tank.

I think that he’s definitely beter than Guillen, and a real candidate to get hot if put in a pennant race. Let’s not forget that Lee slashed .306/.393/.579/.972 just last year. And he plays plus D at 1B, and still can run above-average. He trumps Guillen by a bunch. That being said, my main point wasn’t that Lee is preferable to Guillen, it was that BS should have been standing on his head to keep Lee from falling to 2 of his main competitors (both of whom can really use him).

Yeah, but I bet Lee cleared waivers awhile ago, definitely before the Chipper injury anyways.

Wrong!
The waiver rules are clear. The team only has 48 hours to work out a deal once another team claims him. Lee could not have been put on waivers before Monday. Now, if he had cleared waivers, then he could have been put on the wire as long ago as Aug. 1st, but the news is clearly that the Braves claimed him on the wire.
Here’s the most up-to-date list of the players that have cleared waivers:

Secondly, even if your statement had been true, BS would still have been proven an idiot. That would mean that Derrek Lee was available before he traded for Guillen.
"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner
Man, everyone keeps hating on Guillen, and all he’s done is hit the shit out of the ball since he’s got here. Yeah, he’s the reason a starting pitcher hasn’t won a game in weeks.

If he hasn't cleared waivers
Sabean should jump on it in all his veterany goodness.
Trade fringe prospect for Lee, throw him at 1B, Huff to RF, Guillen to curb. Promise same 5 days of work a week to Lee and promise 5 shifts as a bus boy to Guillen at the chophouse.

I don’t think we’d be hearing anything about this if he hadn’t already cleared waivers.

You're probably right
seeing as how the 2 articles i read on it had no “assuming he clears waivers”
either way this was something Sabean should have been on if he can be had for nothing as opposed to Guillen, especially with his type B status and his huge altercation with Zambrano. Maybe Lee just didn’t want to play on the west coast? I dunno.

This is why we can't have nice things.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
Sorry I posted this in another thread of the same subject.
This appears to be the active one.
