minor lines, 8/17/10

Highlight from the Giants' farm: Chris Heston had 7.1 shutout IP.  Also notable, Eugenio Velez, Ryan Rohlinger, and Adam Duvall homered while also drawing a walk.

Star-divide

AAA: Fresno defeated Omaha 5-2

Fresno: RF-2B Eugenio Velez: 1 for 3, HR, BB, SO

Fresno: RP Denny Bautista: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 K
Fresno: RP Dan Runzler: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K

Velez and Rohlinger had their 5th and 7th HRs in the PCL this year, respectively.

Joaquin provided 2.2 scoreless IP in a spot start on two days rest.  Bautista made his first PCL appearance since early May.  Runzler made his first PCL rehab appearance and his third rehab appearance overall.

AA: Richmond lost to New Britain 8-5

Richmond: CF Darren Ford: 1 for 3, 3B, BB
Richmond: DH Thomas Neal: 1 for 3, 2B, BB

Richmond: RP Felix Romero: 2.1 IP, 2 H, 3 K
Richmond: RP Ronnie Ray: 2.0 IP, 3 K

Ford and Neal were the lone two Flying Squirrels to reach base twice.  Ford had his 9th triple, and Neal his 34th double.

Maday had his second straight poor start with at least 6 ER in no more than 4.0 IP.  Romero made his first appearance in nearly two weeks.  Ray had 2.0 perfect IP, although he did allow two of three inherited runners to score.

A+: San Jose lost to Visalia 4-1

San Jose: RF Juan Perez: 2 for 4, BB, 2 SO
San Jose: 2B Charlie Culberson: 2 for 4, 2 2B, SO

Culberson, who had been cold during the first half of August, doubled twice for his his second and third XBHs this month.  Perez was the other Giant with two hits as he reached base three times.  He has been off to a hot start this month, hitting better than .350.

After allowing a total of just 6 ER over his first three Cal League starts, Bucardo allowed 4 ER in his fourth start.  Did too many ground balls find holes?  He did have a 9/2 GO/FO line.  Wilshire and Quirarte combined for 6 K in 3.0 perfect IP.

A-: Augusta defeated Savannah 1-0

Augusta: 3B Chris Dominguez: 0 for 4, 3 SO
Augusta: RF Ryan Lollis: 1 for 3, 3B

Augusta: SP Chris Heston: 7.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 8 K--2 WP, 1 E

Lollis led off the 8th inning with his 8th triple, leading to the game's only run when the next batter singled.  Those were two of the GreenJackets' four hits.  Dominguez had the oh-fer with the hat trick.  So far this month has he 20 SO in 66 AB (i.e., 30%).

Heston had perhaps his best start of the season, facing just four batters over the minimum.  With two straight starts with no earned runs in 7.0+ IP, he has brought his ERA below 4.00.

ssA: Salem-Keizer defeated Spokane 5-3
(rallying for three runs in the 8th inning)

Salem-Keizer: C Mike Murray: 2 for 3, BB
Salem-Keizer: DH Adam Duvall: 1 for 2, HR, BB, HBP, SB

Salem-Keizer: RP Andrew Romo: 2.1 IP, 4 K

Duvall, who had his 4th HR, and Murray, who had the Volcanoes' lone multi-hit line, both reached base three times.

Schumer provided 5.0 scoreless IP in his second pro start, and first start in the NWL after two relief appearances.  Romo struck out four of his eight batters.

Dominican: SP Yeini Martinez: 7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K--1 WP

Feliz (19.8 y.o.) had two of the Gigantes' three hits, raising his AVG to .304.  Martinez (19.8 y.o.) had allowed 2 ER, plus at least one unearned run, in each of his last four starts.

DSL: Giants at Mets1 (today's regularly scheduled game) postponed

Neal is real!

.292/.363/.436 for an OPS of .799.

Also Belt went 1 for 4 with a single but had 2 Ks. I’m starting to wonder why he isn’t walking as much, as his K’s are really getting up there. He has twice as many strikeouts as BB’s coming from SJ where he was walking more than he was striking out. Does anyone know if he is striking out looking or swing throughs because I think at least if he’s striking out looking, he’s at least probably looking for a pitch to hit than just hacking.

His K rate in AA has stayed similar for both August(10K’s in 44 AB) and July (20K’s in 104 AB) and he has already walked as many times this month as he did last.

Valez hit a dinger

I know he has mental lapses on defense and he has no true position but i really want him to make it, he has charisma, i just like him. even if its just a utility OF/2b spot on the roster, would make me sad to see him walk away or be released with just mostly a career in the minors.

I know as McCoven we're supposed to dislike Velez, and while I don't want him clanking in the SF outfield I actually agree with you

Saw him the other day in Fresno. He interacted really well with the kids pre-game, and seemed to be enthusiastic and positive. I’d like him to succeed.

Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.

I’m with you jasonx. I’ve always found Eugenio oddly lovable. I think I’d prefer him starring in his own sitcom to playing regularly with the Giants, but I do really wish him well.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

He;s hitting like 274 in August, wich for him is bad, but if thats him slumping, not to bad really.

by jasonx on Aug 18, 2010 8:42 AM PDT up reply actions

I wonder if he’s still feeling the effect of the wrist injury? His slump seems to closely coincide with the time that he missed a game when his wrist locked up on him.

I haven’t seen him in a couple of weeks, but will most likely see him again over the next week or so. I’ll keep an eye out for that and let you know if I see anything in his swing.

He should talk to Mark Derosa and Brian Sabean. I hear wrist problems have no effect whatsoever on one’s hitting.

I feel prickishly demanding!

I couldn't be prouder of my recent adoptee - Tim Lincecum's dealer. He provides the secret fuel behind both Cy Youngs. Also, he taught Timmy the change-up.

Cagner & Lacey

Cagney & Lacey. It refers to the old TV show about 2 lady cops. The stat shows how the batter would be hitting if either one of Caggey & Lacey were pitching to him.

Seriously, it stands for “close & late” – the results from ABs in the later innings of close games. I’m not sure what their specific definition of ’Close" (probably means within 1 run) and “Late” (probably means after the 7th innning) are.

Culberson
Culberson, who had been cold during the first half of August, doubled twice for his his second and third XBHs this month.

Culberson missed several games at the end of July with a wonky thumb. It definitely has had an effect on his power numbers ever since he’s been back an starting regularly again. One good thing though, his new-found ability to K less and walk more is still intact.

Might depend on how the bullpen has been doing in the week or so before Affeldt and Runzler return. I feel like it’s been taxed pretty heavily lately (through no fault of Bochy’s), and if that’s the case when they come back, the Giants might bolster the pen for a few days before chopping someone else off. I’m not sure I like that idea, but I could see the Giants doing it.
