Post-game thread: Padres take series
Well, that was fun. There's no sense worrying about if the Giants are going to make the playoffs or not if Tim Lincecum doesn't pitch better. Sure, he was bled to death just a little bit today, but the whole "just get them into the playoffs and take their chances with that pitching staff" mindset doesn't work when the ace is broken.
At least it wasn't a one-run loss.

I can't believe I had more fun watching the Nats than the Giants today.

At least it wasn't as frustrating as Friday's game
After Pablo made that error I couldn’t take it anymore. But, there’s still a lot of baseball left and it’s time to take on the Phillies.
I can’t really be optimistic about the Giants winning the division if they can’t beat the ducking Fadres. I think the Giants can win the wild card, but I really want to win the NL West.
Yes, really, I have not updated my blog in a long long time: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball
Plus, what does it say about playoff games if we can’t win the high-pressure games in the regular season?
yeah—it IS a crappy feeling. I guess we all just deal differently. Time to crack open another beer!

we can beat the padres
The losses are frusterating, but at least we’re not getting blown out (except today). I still think we have a much better chance at the division rather than the wild card

WC will be difficult
Giants have the hardest remaining schedule out of WC race teams.
Here's to the Dodgers and their bucket of suck.
We have won high pressure games in the regular season. A couple examples include some of our wins vs. the Dodgers in July and our win yesterday. All of those still count.

this year's final 3 games are against the Padres
they’ll have to beat them just to win the Wild Card

There’s still a lot of baseball left to play. Today wasn’t fun to watch but it was 1 loss, no more no less. The sky is not falling.
This team has a lot of heart and we’re going to see just how much they want it over this coming road trip. In my mind, this is definitely a playoff team.
I’m not sure what’s wrong with Lincecum, but it needs to be addressed pronto (as I’m sure the Giants organization is realizing). He might need to be put on the DL as right now he seems almost worthless.
by Greg Litton Fan on Aug 15, 2010 4:17 PM PDT reply actions
I wouldn't say he was almost worthless.
It’s just that there’s something clearly wrong with his mechanics and he needs time to figure it out.
You’re right—I should have chosen my words more carefully. I think it will be interesting to see how he bounces back….it might be next season, but I think he’s learning a lot.
by Greg Litton Fan on Aug 15, 2010 4:22 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t know, about 3 of his last 5 or 6 starts he hasn’t been able through 5 innings. That’s pretty close to worthless.
I think perhaps taking a start off could do some good for him.
He hasn't been terribly able since June.
Not the dominant pitcher everyone was talking about the previous two years.
With his mechanics, every piece has to be working right for him to pitch right, but you can expect to find it and fix it eventually. Maybe adding new kinds of pitches at the big league level is messing with his mechanics. That, too can be fixed in time.
But do the Giants have that kind of time?
I don’t think he been bad for a really long time until now. Maybe he’s a headcase and we’re only finding this out now because he hasn’t been bad before.
Dontrelle Willis (dont kill me). I’m sure tim will come out of it, and of course he’s not the next willis, but it’s happened before :(

It’s also happened before that pitchers have had off years and it hasn’t meant they suddenly became awful.

4.7 ERA. That is according to Lurie. Having said that -jponry is right. This happens to pitchers sometimes. He’ll rebound. If not this year, then next.
This is the first time in his life that he has not suffered through tough times on the mound for an extended period. He isn’t handling it particularly well. I think he may have some dead arm issues. There are some mechanical issues. And he’s lost his confidence. All three will return. Hopefully this year.
I would go for the Lincecum for Don Felder trade

Out of shape
been sitting around for 2 weeks. He didn’t exactly look good heading to second, but he ran out of gas about a third of the way past second. They didn’t get him for speed. He should be fine in RF on this road trip. Especially in Philly. By then, hopefully he’s got his legs under him.
Out of shape after two weeks?

It was the 4th inning
I don’t mind so much the execution (or lack thereof, in terms of Guillen’s speed) but the decision. With nobody out in the 4th, down three runs, you stand your happy ass on 2nd base and wait to get driven home. If you get stranded, you get stranded, but the smart baseball move is to stay on 2nd base.
Here's to the Dodgers and their bucket of suck.
yeah
but then the play would have just been close. He was out by almost 10 feet.

Guillen adds a threat
which is more than you can say about Ishi or Rowand. Again, you have to compare him with what the Giants have, not what we’d like them to have. He’s an upgrade at the plate over either Ishi (who has looked bad the last couple weeks – and didn’t we all know this was coming) and Rowand (who has looked bad the last 130 weeks).
Ishi has looked bad over the last couple weeks? What does that make Guillen’s 1-25 or whatever it is skid?
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

I wouldn’t mind a platoon of the two. That being said, one has had a successful major league career, and the other hasn’t. I can’t blame them for taking a shot with the veteran in a pennant race. Ishi will probably get another shot next year and Guillen won’t be here.

Every team competing for playoffs needs someone on the staff who will be the stopper and can pretty much guarantee a victory. Cain is great, Zito is Solid. But Lincecum has to be that guy.

Hasn’t Cain been that guy for a while. He doesn’t get a ton of wins, but he seems to be really solid recently.

Philly has trips.
Wildcard will be ATL. Philly will win that division. When they get Howard and Utley back they are going to be damn near unbeatable. Halliday, Oswalt and Hamels is a formidable trio. Blanton aint half bad. The one hole they have is their closer.
I have reached the point where I’m rooting for ATL to collapse. But that is unlikely as well.
Sweet little .615 BABIP for Timmy this afternoon
A herd of water buffalo in the outfield, a third-baseman at shortstop, a ever expanding/slowing third baseman … no more pitching-to-contact, Giants’ pitchers – the new plan is STRIKE EVERYBODY OUT.
Man – I mean, I love Burrell’s bat and all, and Nate doesn’t look like he’ll ever hit enough to be a big league corner outfielder, but the pitchers gotta be missing Torres-Rowand-Nate outfields.
Giants’ starting pitchers BABIP:
.236 – first two months of the season
.296 – since Burrell joined the team
¡Viva los Gigantes!
I’d be more interested to know what the opponent BAA is when there are 2 outs. This whole home series was pretty brutal. Everytime we had 2 outs, we suddenly let guys on base and score.
Are you suggesting that there is a causative effect there
Cause I don’t see it. Burrell is no Barry Bonds in left. But I just don’t think he has failed to get to that many catchable balls. There was one today that he maybe should have caught. But most of the dinks were in front of Torres (two, including Tejeda’s two run single) and seeing eye ground balls. At least that is my recollection during the time Timmy was in. I turned it off and watched golf after that.
Didn’t watch the game. I was hoping that someone who did would could clarify what happened. So – thanks.
In terms of the season-wide splie, no, I’m was not simply saying that “Burrell is the problem”, not at all. Clearly, there are many factors at play with a jump that big, part of which is regression to the mean. Part of it also is that Uribe’s glove is an asset at 3B or 2B but a liability at SS, that (I have read – have been in Asia all summer and haven’t watched any games live) Panda has been incrementally putting weight back on and losing some mobility, that Huff is less of a defensive liability at 1B than he is in RF …
And even if Burrell is a butcher out there, I still love what he brings to the offense (the 4.28 P/PA is pretty sweet).
I think that’s it can be dangerous to rely on one’s eyes too much for evaluating defense. A good defender can get close to a ball, and we can think “ah what a hack, he didn’t get to it”, while a worse defender doesn’t come close, and we think, “well, that’s a clean hit, no one could have got to that.”
¡Viva los Gigantes!
What really sucks is that the Padres are on their way to play the cubbies… While we play Philly/Cards
Cubbies then Milwaukee
One good note – SD has a tougher Sept then the Giants.

Here’s a stat to chew on:
Giants starters are winless in their last 12 games, going 0-7 with a 5.88 ERA.
That won’t get it done with a team built on its pitching staff

Krukow was sugar coating it today after the game. He said on the bright side, Lincecum had electric stuff in the first inning haha! Too bad baseball is a 9 inning game.
He did actually get a lot of Ks today! So that’s better than him not getting a lot of Ks.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
"Out, out, Fred Lewis!" - JCTillam Gamerspeare
Since Ks are better than other out because it takes out the BABIP factor, doesn’t that mean it’s even worse when you get killed when having a lot of Ks?
Bruce Bochy would like you to look at the career numbers and stop complaining.

The Merkin Valdez of McCovey Chronicles!!!!!!
It was really a truly bizarre start for Tim. 8 Ks in 3.1 IP. But a .700ish BABIP. I mean, what do you even take from that? Only two of the hits he gave up were really well hit, but a lot of the bloops did seem like they came off of pretty bad pitches. And there’s no question that his command was off.
So I don’t even know what to say about it. The strikeouts were a good sign though, I think. They were mostly swinging as well. I think it’s a matter of staying in that mode consistently though.

I guess it means that Lincecum was about as good as the Padres’ lineup? That his pitches weren’t great, but that the Padres were good/lucky enough to hit them anyway? I don’t think it was as bad as it seemed, but Timmy needs to pitch better than the significantly-below-average Padres’ lineup.

Surprised? Nothing is ever wrong with the Giants according to Kruk.

I feel like I need to shower after saying this, but I have more confidence in Dirty Sanchez than I do in Lincecum right now.
Disagree
I think my confidence level right now would be -
Cain
Zito
Lincecum
MadBum
Sanchez
I MIGHT put MadBum ahead of Tim at this point if it weren’t for the fact that he’s in uncharted territory as far as IP goes.

I’m spitting mad over the ridiculous luck, but really, if Lincecum gets a normal .300 BAbip today, it’s a tight ballgame. Today, along with the previous six games – even though we won half of them – is the definition of a fluke. Crazy shit happens and we need to focus on the standings and Tuesday.

I feel the same way. Hopefully these next 3 series against the Phillies, Cards, and Reds will prove us right.
Toughest test of the season, and it couldn’t be happening at a worse time with the way the team is playing. For whatever it’s worth though, the Giants got swept by the Pads back in April and then went on to win consecutive series against the Cards, Phils, and Rockies before sweeping the Marlins.
x3 I think we can beat anyone as well. The offense is doing fine, we just got shut down by pads pitching is all… its the SP im worried about. Hopefully Zito will be the stopper (seems to usually be him anyways) and set the tone for the road trip. zeets starts twice this trip so thats good newz

Sadly
im in this line. You guys didn’t get swept, good for you. Now stop raping toads and get back to the business at hand. Cards and Philly are very decent teams that will eat us alive if we dont forget this series.

An excellent point, GV,
and though it’s hard to lose to the iPads of our division, the playoff issue might well come down to the records of the Phils and Reds.
