Around SBN: Ryder Hesjedal Wins Giro d'Italia

minor lines, 8/12/10

Highlight from the Giants farm: Chris Heston allowed only an unearned run in 7.0 IP.  Also notable, in the DSL, Jorge Lopez hit for the cycle.

Star-divide

AAA: Fresno had a scheduled off-day.
(It was their final scheduled off-day this year; they have a two-game lead in their four-team division.)

AA: Richmond hosting New Hampshire was cancelled due to rain.

A+: San Jose had a scheduled off-day.
(Their only remaining scheduled off-day is next Monday, August 16.)

A-: Augusta defeated Rome 5-3

Augusta: RF Ryan Lollis: 2 for 2, BB

Augusta: SP Chris Heston: 7.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K--1 HB, 1 WP

With the GreenJackets' only multi-hit line, Lollis reached base in all three of his plate appearances.

Heston allowed just one run for the fourth time in his last five starts.  And this time he was credited with the win, his first win in over a month.

ssA: Salem-Keizer lost to Eugene 10-0

Salem-Keizer: 1B Daniel Brock: 2 for 4

Salem-Keizer: SP Seth Rosin: 1.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K
Salem-Keizer: RP Justin Schumer: 2.2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K--1 WP

With two of the Volcanoes' five hits (all singles), Brock was their only hitter to reach base twice.  He entered the night hitting .247/.322/.364 through 154 AB.

Rosin, the Giants' fourth rounder this year, made his first pro start after five relief appearances.  It did not go well as he retired just five of the twelve batters he faced.  Schumer was the first man out of the pen in long relief.  Pitching in his second NWL game and fifth pro game overall, he allowed his first runs as a pro.

R: Giants lost to Royals 7-4

Scottsdale: RF Rafael Rodriguez: 2 for 4, SO
Scottsdale: CF Chuckie Jones: 3 for 4, SO

Scottsdale: SP Lorenzo Mendoza: 3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 0 BB, 2 K

Jones paced the rookie Giants' offense with three of their twelve hits, raising his AVG to .297.  Raf-Rod was one of three other rookie Giants with two hits.  His AVG sits at an even .300.

Mendoza had a nice, short, effective start.  In general he has been too hittable with 47 H and 25 K in 35.2 IP (.318 BAA), so this was a nice start that did not fit that general trend.

DSL: GIants defeated Cubs2 10-6

Dominican: CF-LF Jorge Lopez: 4 for 5, HR, 3B, 2B, BB, SB
Dominican: 1B Victor Feliz: 4 for 4, BB
Dominican: SP Keurin Feliz: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

Lopez (18.11 y.o.) had his most notable game as a pro, not only hitting his first pro HR in two seasons, but hitting for the cycle, plus drawing a walk and stealing home.  The performance lifted his OPS above .700.  The red-hot Feliz (19.7 y.o.) also had four hits, albethem all singles, and walked to reached base five times.  Feliz (19.11 y.o.) ran his W-L record to 7-0 in nine starts with a 1.70 ERA.

Bowker Update

In 9 games with the Indianapolis Indians so far, he’s hitting .406/.441/.656 with 5 doubles, 1 homer and only one (!) walk. Has played LF, RF, and 1B.

If he continues to hit .400, he doesn’t have to walk. I’m sure he’ll be a September callup for the Pirates, but for this one weekend, I’ll be glad we have Javier Lopez to pitch to Gonzalez.

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees.

Why?

So he can walk him, like he did yesterday with Dewitt.

So optimistic I fart sunshine and rainbows.

We were at the Volcanoes game. Wow, just wow. That was some sloppy and uninspired baseball!
Rosin didn’t look like much, we didn’t see any breaking stuff, he seemed to be throwing in the 88-91mph range. I’m sure you can’t really judge too terribly much from these games, it was his first pro start and perhaps he was supposed to be working on placement or control or how to wear his socks or something.

We haven’t unpacked yet and somewhere in the mess we have our scorecard. If anyone’s interested [which I doubt] about any specific player, we may have taken some notes….
