Giants trade for Mike Fontenot
Well, at least we know he will be able to make here in time for today's game. IT actually looks (from the stats) that we gave up a pretty decent prospect - Evan Crawford, hitting .316/.375/.447 in Low-A ball as a 20 year old - playing primarily CF. I can't find any BA reports on him unfortunately - we'll see.

Wow.
I don’t mind this deal-though I don’t really see the point. Maybe Rent’s injury is serious.

Who is that young go-getter driving in two with a pinch-hit double?
Um, that’s Ray Fontenot, sir.
I like the cut of his jib!
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?
What’s a jib?

Main Entry: 1jib
Pronunciation: \ˈjib\
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1661
: a triangular sail set on a stay extending usually from the head of the foremast to the bowsprit or the jibboom; also : the small triangular headsail on a sloop — see sail illustration
or the Uban Dictionary definition
jib
Verb. To jib. Jibbing. The act of manuvering a bicycle, skateboard, snowboard or skis in tricky manner on top of and around a structure such as a stump, rocks, stairs, railigs, rooftops, etc. When you are playing around, showing off, jumping, flipping, hopping, etc you are jibbing.

Insurance Policy
I think this move has everything to do with the injury problems in the infield. Renteria might go on the DL, Uribe is nicked up, and Downs has a broken thumb. Burriss, Velez, Sanchez and Rohlinger have all spent time on the DL this year. They needed another infielder on the 40 man roster. Next I wouldn’t be surprised if they get a veteran catcher to put on the 40 man roster. They only have two. They are screwed if Posey or Whiteside gets injured.
So is Velez or Burriss optioned?

I'd much rather have Fontenot than Velez
Fontenot’s much better defensively than Velez, he can play shortstop and he can get on base a little. And considering we gave up a 22 year old who isn’t hitting in low A ball, I’m good.

Fontenot's controlled for 3 yrs...
Though not at a great value (1mil plus going forward), in looking at his defensive numbers 2b-ss-3b.
Provided Brown and Parker sign, that puts plenty of depth in our lower-level OFs. Kind of hedges the IF depth should Uribe decline our arbitration offer this offseason too.

Quick report on Fontenot
Left-handed hitting 2B who is useful against RHPs but isn’t particularly good against LHPs. He’s got some pop despite his size and knows how to take a walk. Defensively, he can play SS in emergencies and 3B at a below average level. He’s a decent defender at 2B and should stick there.

Awesome
This just sets up trading Fontenot for an elite relief pitcher. Because that’s what we always do with Fontenots.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
we traded joe fontenot to the marlins a few years ago, now we get a fontenot back. Different Fontenot who cares.
Whose roster space is this guy taking?
I don’t even want to bother looking up stats on this deal, so I’ll just let you guys make up my mind for me. Do I like it or dislike it?
Good Trade
Our middle infield is either beat up or slumping.. Evan Crawford likely would have been competing for the center field spot in San Jose next year with first round pick Gary Brown and he probably would have either ended up on the bench or repeating at Augusta.
I think this is correct. It’s a harmless deal at the worst I think, and Fontenot is definitely better depth than what the Giants had. Plus, he’ll be around for a few years. I’m cool with it.
I feel prickishly demanding!

It seems like people are bashing the trade just cuz Sabean made it...
If you look at the numbers…it’s a pretty good pick up.
We got: Fontenot:
2007: .278/.336/.402 (260 PAs)
2008: .305/.395/.514 (284 PAs)
2009: .236/.301/.377 (419 PAs)
2010: .284/.332/.402 (185 PAs)
He also takes pitches: 4.23 Pitches/appearance:
(compare: F. Sanchez: 3.70 P/PA; Panda: 3.42 P/PA; Rowand: 3.51 P/PA)
He was used as a LHP matchup to a RHP on the Cubs this year (.284/.333/.401 against RHP/only 7 PAs against LHPs). He actually hit LHP pretty well in 2008 but was bad in 2009 against any pitcher.
He is actually a really good complement to F. Sanchez who hits LHP well but sucks against RHP. (.350/.409/.500 v. .232/.293/.273)
Pretty good UZR in 2008 and 2009.
We traded:
Evan Crawford:
2009 (Lower A) .316/.375/.447 in 129 PAs
2010 (Higher A-Augusta): 4 hrs. 23 RBIs .255/.319/.366 in 477 PAs 35 BBs 108 Ks
Pretty much baseball garbage…no power, low average/OBP/SLG, and unbelievably high BB to K ratio (108Ks is unacceptable when you are only hitting 4 homers).
Conclusion:
With Sanchez and Fontenot combined, we get 2B Production of
.350/.409/.500 v LHP and .284/.332/.402 v. RHP
and had to give up basically nothing…
F. Sanchez who hits LHP well but sucks against RHP. (.350/.409/.500 v. .232/.293/.273)
Question – when are those splits from? I suspect they’re not long term splits because Sanchez wouldn’t be an everyday player hitting like that against RHP….
Also, how many of Fontenot’s career has been v RHP compared to v LHP? And we should look at career UZR, not single season UZR’s.
by Missing Barry on Aug 12, 2010 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions
Freddy’s stats are from 2010…
Fontenot has pretty much been a LHB v. RHP this year…
2008:
v. RHP: 259 PAs, .302/.393/.518
v. LHP: 25 PAs, .333/.417/.476
2009:
v. RHP: 362 PAs, .240/.309/.388
v. LHP: 57 PAs, .212/.246/.308
Pro-Tip: Don’t use lefty/righty splits for single seasons. Fontenot has a pretty favorable career split for righties, and Sanchez actually does have a very sizable platoon split for lefties (almost a career .900 OPS!).

I'm cautiously optimistic about this
I obviously want to see if he will continue to perform at his current level, or if the change of scenery affects him adversely.
If he’s a bit put out about being traded, even subconsciously, he may not continue to produce at the same level.
I think that’s unlikely, but it’s not like it can’t happen.
I came, I saw, I told bad jokes and left.
Well, he could also decide he’s happy in a new setting and hit like it’s 2008 again. I generally don’t worry about those things, not because I don’t think they can happen, but because I don’t think there’s any way to know if it will happen and what the effect will be. I’ll just stick with the average! ;)
by Missing Barry on Aug 12, 2010 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions
Got a point there.
And it’s not a huge worry to me, either. As I said, I’m cautiously optimistic, but unfortunately I’ve got a streak of either realism or pessimism that won’t let even a slight possibility of a problem out of my mind. Just enough to be annoying.
I came, I saw, I told bad jokes and left.
Eh, he’s a waiver wire transaction for a meaningless organizational filler piece. If he manages to Ron Pruitt a dying quail in somewhere at some point in the next 7 weeks he’ll have more than made himself worthwhile.

It’s also likely he’ll be excited to have been traded to a team in a pennant race.
I’m also cool with the trade because it’s not like he’s blocking any middle infield prospects right now, and he’s probably not going to be blocking anyone for the next couple years. It’s fine by me.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
