…but I do have time to mention that I just got a bunch of Kreator albums. I haven’t listened yet, but I’m looking forward to it. A recent discovery of Helloween made me realize there was a lot from the 80s and 90s that I’m missing.

So what’s with the insistence that Rowand must play center field? Is he really a better center fielder than Torres? Or is he really such a better center fielder than corner outfielder that it makes sense to put Torres in a corner instead?

Rowand has played nearly 8,000 more major league innings in center field than Torres. You really can’t sacrifice that kind of major league experience.

I think the Giants should go for it even if things look rather dire. I still doubt the Padres, and the rest of the teams in the NL West are flawed. Roll the dice and hope for the best. If you have a chance to get into the postseason lottery, then you go for it.

I’d feel better about the odds if they didn’t have to leapfrog three teams. If they only had to leapfrog one or two, I’d feel a little more comfortable.
And the Rockies, Dodgers, and Padres all keep beating the Giants. Like Lars said.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
I’d feel better about our odds if I felt we were a team that could get hot and go on a 12-game winning streak.
As it is, 5 is the most games we’ve won in a row in the last few seasons. We just don’t have the type of offense that can sustain that kind of streak.
They could be Giants...but not really.
Doesn't need to be a prolonged winning streak
I think a 10-2 hot streak would thrust us right back into the thick of things.
I’m in favor of vigorous thrusting and I don’t care which teams we hurt in doing so.
Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!
5 or 6 probably

No, but people were listening to soundbites instead of studying their platforms, which were actually fairly different——especially with regards to fiscal policy. Remember the “lock box” that SNL made fun of?
Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.
i hear you and agree with you
however, it’s not as simple as that. you’ve essentially created a soundbite yourself to neatly wrap up third-party voters. A lot of people are flat-ass disgusted with the two-party system. I’m one of them.
However, there are the practical bits (like SCOTUS appointments) and the actual differences in policy (which aren’t nearly as stark as I’d like them to be).

Maybe a fairer set of statements would be something like this:
Voting for Nader because you believe Gore=Bush is oversimplistic, however, voting for Nader because you really are substantially more liberal than Gore makes sense logically. I just think that the folks in the first group tipped the balance.
Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.

No but I think there was a certain cavalierness of attitude – even laziness. Option 2: Go with the guy who is part of an administration who is engaging in war I don’t like.
Option J: Whip it out.

unless you were living and voting in FL, AR, OH, or another swing state, it didn’t make a whit of difference. I could’ve voted for AJ Pierzynski here in CA and Gore woulda still carried it

Wow, I was mostly just fucking around – the ’don’t blame me, I voted for Nader’ trope annoys me. I didn’t expect it to blow up like this…
I mean, I was happy enough to have at least a token third viewpoint in the election, but at the same time I have trouble taking Ralph Nader seriously as a Presidential candidate. Maybe if he had ever won an election at any level of government I might feel differently…
With regards to hindsight, I had this argument with my brother pre-election and while I couldn’t name the precise excuse, I predicted a high body count in the event of a Bush Presidency. I wasn’t even that high on Gore, I just thought of the Bush clan as the fucking Yacht club mafia and felt they needed to be kept away from the reigns of power.
While I generally want third party candidates to garner as high a percentage of the vote as possible, in that particular Presidential election I considered a Nader vote in a swing state to be irresponsible.
Utter frustration and futility.

Fastest way to get to San Jose from SFO?
My friend is traveling and needs to get from SFO to San Jose?
From what I’ve figured, the easiest way is to take a BART to an amtrak station (oakland?) and then take the amtrak station to SJ? Can anyone confirm?
this
Get on BART to Milbrae, then take Caltrain to San Jose.
Your friend should check if Milbrae service is available. Availability is kind of wonky during commute hours.

Exactly
The CalTrain stop in San Jose is at Diridon, which is the central hub for all public transportation in San Jose. And it’s in somewhat walking distance from all the major hotels in downtown San Jose (I mean, it’s a somewhat far walk if you have a lot of luggage, but it can be done).

It depends
on when you’re arriving. Before 7 p.m. Mon-Fri, you have to take BART to San Bruno first, transfer there to a Millbrae-bound train, and change to Caltrain at Millbrae. That will take you to San Jose. After 7 p.m. during the week and all day on weekends, there are direct BART trains from the airport to Millbrae.
Twenty-seven years of waiting has come to an end.

I have a problem making a trade unless we’re one or two back because we don’t really have gaping holes anywhere like we did last year. CF Torres 2B Sanchez 3B Sandoval 1B Huff C Posey SS Uribe LF Burrell RF Schierholtz P ______ isn’t a bad lineup, and while we could upgrade the outfield and the rotation, I’m not sure if a DeJesus trade means hanging on to our top prospects. IMO, that’d be a marginal upgrade over Schierholtz (better bat, same defense, Nate may even have the edge on D), and I don’t want to relinquish a top-10 guy for an extra win unless that extra win is going to put us over the top. Same goes for the rotation; Martinez should really be the 5th starter, and he’s just fine in that role. Unless we can acquire a controllable budding star that fits one of OF, SP, SS, I don’t see a trade working out in either the short-term (likely difficult to make a significant upgrade) or the long-term (trade young players for old players, and look how well that’s worked out so far).
Goodbye, Steven Johnson, we hardly knew ye. Seriously, that was short.

This poll is invalid because I don't trust the Giants managment to make a good trade, so I'm abstaining
Chose this without a doubt, can’t have borkian and sabean think “its time to get the big bat to push us over the hump!” and go out and trade thomas neal for jose guillen and yuneski betancourt.
"The criticism was so brutal that Sabean was forced to declare, at a press conference, "I am not an idiot." Thus, the pattern of Sabean's relationship to his critics was established."
LOL, AS IF!!!
We’d get one or the other… Not both! At least not without throwing in Crawford too.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.
Does it really matter
Seriously, would the Giants record be much better/worse with a lineup of Bowker, Torres, Schierholz, Posey, Ishikawa, Frandzen, Downs and Sandoval than they are now.
What they definitely would have is money to spend on a difference maker.
I Said Within 3 Or 4 Games
But this should be in reference to the playoffs thru either the division title or wildcard not just the division title. How we make the playoffs should not matter.
I chose 1-2 games out
because this team is simply not good enough to make up 3-4 games especially if there is a third team involved (which I would suspect at this point). Any player that would make them good enough to make up 3-4 games would cost too much for them without depleting the current roster.
I recognize this is a bit pessimistic, but I’ve seen too many half-way efforts at improving the team in July when it is down by 3-4 games. They never make up the difference it seems.
Q: Did you ever make an offer for Vladimir Guerrero?
Sabean: In a word: No. If we had signed Guerrero or [Gary] Sheffield, we would have been without [Long list of replacement level vets]—obviously not being able to field a competitive team, especially from an experience standpoint, given our level of spending.
I chose not to vote

I voted "Invalid"
Except, I would definitely like to see the Giants move Renteria and Rowand, too, if possible. I doubt they’d have takers for Rowand, unless the Giants were to pay the bulk of his remaining salary.
But I would think there just might be a sucker GM or two who could be lured by Rent’s still shiny-shiny batting average, his post-season magic, and his money-down-the-stretch-iness. If the Giants were able to get the kind of value they did for Bengie, I’d think Rent could have even greater trade value.
Also, ever since Rent came off the DL, the Giants have basically had two (would-be) starting shortstops. Trading Rent would help solve that problem. Trade Rent. Bring in a good defensive SS to back up Uribe, and I think the Giants would be better off.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?
even with Uribe banged up? not that rent is every healthy, but if we bring in (or up) a SS, it should be someone who is worth starting
Hadn't heard that Uribe is injured
Rent, though, is always battling dings and nicks due to (I suspect) his lack of conditioning. I just think Uribe and Rent are too similar. Both are oldish, not very good defensively, primarily there for their bats. In that regard, I think Uribe is the better of the two. And Uribe also plays multiple infield positions. I think Renteria is not needed in any way.
I agree, though, that the backup to Uribe needs to be able to play and start fairly frequently. And as I said, he needs to be a plus defensively.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher?
What would it take to get DeJesus?
I think that would be a good upgrade, with Huff moving back to first base. I like giving Ishikawa more at-bats through spot starts, but Huff should really be the starting 1B. Would Bowker and a lower level prospect be enough to get DeJesus?
I voted "invalid"
Because I think that’s what the Giants will trade for; an invalid
