A new world, post Bengie?  Nah.

Probably the Molina deal was an aberration, a momentary aligning of the planets. The Rangers are unexpectedly in a pennant race and desperate for a catcher, and we happened to have one we could spare. Still, we can dream of further additions-by-subtractions, can't we?

So what we need are trading partners, specifically teams who are a) in a pennant race, b) able to take on salary, and c) in need of something we have and could lose. So who's still in it? Yankees, Rays, Red Sox, Tigers, Twins, Chisox, Rangers, Angels, Braves, Mets, Phillies, Reds, Cardinals, and everyone in our division except Arizona. Of those teams, the Yankees, Red Sox, Chisox, Angels, Mets and Cardinals might be able to take on salary. And frankly, there's not much good news.

First: Edgar Renteria. The only team listed above who really need a SS are the Cardinals. Brendan Ryan's been awful and has gotten more PA's than Felipe Lopez, who isn't bad with a 750 OPS, but who's mostly been playing third. Tyler Greene's also in the mix, but with 35 AB's. So maybe. Rent's expensive and expendable; I don't think we'd need to ask much in return.

Rowand's harder, because the contract is so much worse. Texas could really use him, but there's no way their ownership difficulties would allow any deal like that. The idea of trading him to the Cubs for Zambrano, I think unlikely. First, Zambrano's contract is worse than Rowand's, and second, Zambrano's crazy. Plus, can he still pitch? Has he gone crazy because he can't pitch anymore? And none of the contending teams really needs a centerfielder. So we're stuck with him, I think, unless something happens, like Torii Hunter blowing out a knee or something awful like that.

Loathe the idea of Sanchez and Neal for Prince Fielder, or something. Prince isn't going to age well. Would you rather have the next five years of Thomas Neal's career or the next five years of Prince Fielder's? Nothing's certain, but I lean towards Neal. Be patient, and wait for the start of the Brandon Belt era.
