Friday 7/30 Trade Deadline thread (AKA you probably don't need to start a new Fanpost thread)

Once again, let's try to keep our thoughts, opinions and the rumors we're hearing in one place as opposed to creating a new Fanpost.

Bonus fun fact: The 2010 Giants have a team OBP of 327...which is above league average!!!  (Who would have made that bet?)  Last year they finished at 309.

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

definitely. if we could deal Sanchez and had a stud on the farm to take his spot, we’d have more flexibility. unfortunately, our starting pitching depth is all at the major league level and the what few starter prospects we do have are at A+ and lower.

Speaking of LH relievers

Nate Robertson, formerly a serviceable pitcher with the Tigers, has been released by the Marlins. Now I’m not advocating signing Robertson as a starter, but he could be a very cheap lefty reliever option. Downs is obviously the magic lefty prize, but the price is apparently too high.

any action in the giants front office?
12:30

Chris Sprow | ESPN The Mag | R.C. Editor: New copy machine. Aside from that, surprised that it seems like focus is far more on bullpen help, less on offense. Put me in the camp that would like them to get a bat, but I also don’t get upset like folks have here when they don’t get a guy like Cantu, with his .308 OBP. The deadline tends to make any guy with 10 HRs look like “a bat”. Well, look how he got that still moderate total. 75Ks vs 23 BBs is one idea. Several reports that they’ve called on the likes of Will Ohman. Yeah … exciting.
12:30

Doug Mittler: A Mercury News report says the Giants make take a look at Brian Fuentes if the Angels decide to become sellers. He would be a nice set-up to Brian Wilson.
12:31

Chris Sprow | ESPN The Mag | R.C. Editor: Will say, maybe they’re being covert on a bat. Remember earlier this week the Brewers were openly saying they’d wait til today to decide if they’d sell on guys like Hart. But if the price involves Sanchez or Bumgarner, forget it.

Twins trade Ramos and prospect for Matt Capps

I didn’t see this posted anywhere. It’s was a real shock to me, I think the Twins got fleeced, because I have absolutely no faith that Capps can hold up under the pressure of a pennant race and the playoffs. The Twins really sold low on Ramos, it seems to me very likely that his bat would have heated up at some point in the next year – in which case he would have been a very good trade chip. I guess this just goes to show that the market for relievers is way over-priced right now. Bad news for the Giants.

potential’s always the target margin, and he obviously focused on buy-low candidates (which are actually harder to obtain). But when Edwin Jackson @ 8mill going forward gets you Hudson plus another good pitching prospect, his valuations are waaaay low.

Wiki says:

Sánchez along with Hanley Ramirez, Jesús Delgado, and Harvey García to the Florida Marlins, in the same transaction that brought Josh Beckett, Guillermo Mota, and Mike Lowel

Wow…trying to figure out who got the better deal.

by calbearjd on Jul 30, 2010 10:08 AM PDT reply actions

Um....

The Marlins? Beckett is a good pitcher, but he’s probably not THAT much better than Sanchez, and Hanley Ramirez is the second-best player in the game. Ramirez for Beckett straight up would have been a good deal for Florida, but they got Sanchez and dumped Lowell.

Well, they won a World Series, but we can never know if they would have won a World Series without making that trade. Most teams would trade their entire roster to ensure a World Series victory this year, but one can never know if a team would have won the World Series if they had not made a particular trade.

And, quizzically, Major League Baseball had a gripe too — even though it “may be premature” to determine if it had, in fact, any objection to the sale, its filing said.
But MLB went on to find fault with proposed sale procedures for not adequately “addressing the requirement” that a successful bidder obtain MLB approval before the franchise is transferred. The risk of seeing its power to approve, or reject, a winner is an immense worry for baseball.
Another problem, it said, is that the proposed procedures don’t explicitly spell out that MLB will be repaid for the millions it has been lending the Rangers since the ballclub filed for voluntary bankruptcy on May 24. Baseball wants its money when the sale is consummated, the filing said.

Levine notes that the Angels proposed a trade to the Cubs for Lee over the past ten days. Lee vetoed the potential, according to MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat (Twitter link). Levine originally reported that the Rangers made a proposal for Lee, but now says Texas never offered a deal.

Jason A. Churchill — MLB Draft Blog/Rumor Central: There is no easy button when it comes to making trades, as Buster Olney wrote Thursday on his blog. It takes time, costs money, players, and there has to be a match in so many ways.

SF is still in on relievers, including both of Seattle’s right-handers — Brandon League an David Aardsma — and have shown interest in at least one of Toronto’s trio of trade-available bullpen options in lefty Scott Downs and righties Jason Frasor and Kevin Gregg.

Down goes Strasburg
White Sox pitching coach Don Cooper, speaking to MLB Network Radio on Sirius XM on Thursday, voiced a concern that some pitching gurus previously noted about Strasburg’s manner of throwing a baseball. As he loads the baseball, his elbows raise higher than his shoulders — forming what pitching coaches call an inverted W — and the back of his shoulders pinch toward one another in the “scap loading” portion of the delivery. Such a delivery, some pitching coaches believe, puts him at greater risk of shoulder fatigue.

Cooper called it “an upside-down arm action.” One major league pitching coach years ago told me about the exact same concern about Mark Prior — before Prior broke down.
“He does something with his arm action that is difficult, in my mind, to pitch a lot of innings on,” Cooper said about Strasburg.

Tom House films pitchers at 1,000 frames a second, then downloads into his computer. That way, he can slow down a pitcher’s motion and find exactly where any non-productive movements might be. Of 600 pitchers in House’s computer, he said, Prior has the best mechanics after Ryan, Clemens, Randy Johnson and Curt Schilling.

His mental makeup, nutritional balance, everything else? Off the charts.

But how reliable is House? Is he a pitching guru or a wacko? “Both,” said one of his ex-players, who asked not to be identified.

House was OK with that description. And he believes Prior will be his final validation.

“He has all the pieces,” House said. “Nolan Ryan (who worked with House) had some of the pieces. Other guys have had some. Mark is the first to have them all. Objectively, he’s a can’t-miss.”

he had one good year then he sucked and got traded for nothing to the Indians.

Interesting note about Don Cooper
If I were the Nationals, I would be concerned (though, really, there’s not much they can do; a delivery can be tweaked, but not the basic way the body moves to throw a baseball). Why? Because nobody in major league baseball knows more about pitching durability than Cooper. The White Sox coach may not get the publicity of the Cardinals’ Dave Duncan and has no Cy Young Award winners to brag about, but he’s the best in the business at keeping his guys healthy and pitching deep into games.
Take a look at this list: it’s the number of 200-inning seasons by pitchers for each club since 2003, Cooper’s first full season with the White Sox.
1. Chicago White Sox, 21
2. Chicago Cubs, 14
3. Boston Red Sox, 13
4. Arizona Diamondbacks, 12
St. Louis Cardinals, 12
New York Yankees, 12
Los Angeles Angels, 12
Minnesota Twins, 12
That is impressive. The White Sox are 50 percent better than the second-best team in baseball when it comes to durable pitchers.

I can kind of see that

If they can get him for next to nothing, he could provide more upside than Rohlinger. Plus, if Pablo gets any worse and Lowell gets hot he could have a Will Clark with St. Louis type run in him.

The scout said he looked healthy after seeing him hit 3 HR"s?! No way!

In all seriousness though, I think scouting’s biggest downfall is probably trying to keep the results and the process seperate in evaluating a guy.
