Around SBN: Four TCU Football Players Among 17 Arrested In Drug Ring

Droppin Like Flies

And I couldn't be happier.  Anyone as pumped as I am that David DeJesus, Ryan Braun, Miguel Tejada, Scott Podsednik, Jorge Cantu, Prince Fielder, Jhonny Peralta, Jayson Werth, and Corey Hart are all off the market?  I feel like I am Chuck Norris having dodged all of these bullets...that and I have another fist underneath my beard.

This post is a prayer that we keep "missing out" on all of these epic "upgrades."

He has a NTC, he’s said that he won’t accept any trade, and he’s already vetoed one to the Angels.

Not so cut-and-dry

He only turned down the Angels, and said he liked the Chicago area for his family, but he didn’t specifically say that he would reject any trade. A couple analysts opined that he didn’t want to go to the Angels because he didn’t believe that they were really in the playoff chase.

Apparently a ton of teams are lining up to bid on Jose Bautista. The Phils being one of them. With him in their lineup and a healthy ball club, they’ll crush their opponents.

by Andy Warpath on Jul 29, 2010 9:24 PM PDT up reply actions

Dan Uggla is equitable to Garko.

Don’t forget, “his name is DAN UGGLA!” when he hits another home run off the Giants.

by fabiani1233 on Jul 29, 2010 9:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Uggla is, defense considered, probably a tiny bit (like five runs over a full season) better than Sanchez. He doesn’t upgrade the team enough that it’s likely to matter.

You could pretty much say the same about any of the guys listed in the poll. Some of them are small upgrades (Uggla, Dunn) likely to come at a high price, and some (Guillen, Crisp) just don’t make the team better at all.

In terms of position players, I think the chances of improving the team at the deadline are minimal.

by taliesin on Jul 30, 2010 12:13 AM PDT up reply actions

Uggla is equitable to Dunn, IMO. Assuming he’d play 1B for us, I think it’s fair to call him about a +20 hitter and Dunn about a +30 hitter, but he’s a better fit for our park and probably makes up close to all of that difference on defense.

I love that the nine games out Brewers with a horrible pitching staff, took their players off of the market because they still think they’re in the race, They should immediately fire their GM. Trading a vet hitter or two for young pitching is absolutely what they should be doing.

The prices aren't low...

The Brewers are asking a lot for Fielder and Hart, but part of that is because prospects are so over-valued this year due to the flood of top-tier prospects called up this year, not to mention that this year’s draft is deep so free agents who will garner type-A or type-B status carry a little extra value too. All said I don’t think Melvin’s done a terrible job given the payroll he has to work with. GM’s are going to make mistakes, but small-market teams have a much lower margin of error. I think given the Giants’ payroll Melvin would do a better job than Sabean has.

prospects are so over-valued this year due to the flood of top-tier prospects called up this year

I’m not following, can you clarify?

by Missing Barry on Jul 30, 2010 9:05 AM PDT up reply actions

There has been a large number of top tier prospects called up this year from Jason Heyward and Stephen Strasburg to Domonic Brown and Buster Posey. If you look at the top 20 prospects from last year most of them are in the big league’s and a lot of teams find them in a similar situation as the Giants who had Posey and Bumgardner as their top prospects a year ago, but now find themselves without top prospects that are close. At least that’s one theory why prospects are being over-valued in trade negotiations according to a number of people around the game.

Giants best trade option: Bowker for Rowand

by Giant Torture on Jul 30, 2010 9:22 AM PDT up reply actions

Why does that lead to prospects being overvalued? It sounds to me like what you’re basically saying is that the Top X prospect list has lost a lot of members and gone down in quality on the whole because of that. So if you only use a prospects ranking on the list to value them, I see what you’re saying, but I would hope teams use a process better than that….?

by Missing Barry on Jul 30, 2010 10:01 AM PDT up reply actions

I think it’s actually that so much high level talent has come out of the minors the last couple of seasons, that management around the league (baseball management being just as reactive and imitative in baseball as in any other business endeavor) has begun to value ALL minor league talent on that very high end bar. So they say, hey if I trade my best prospects I’ll be giving away the next Strasburg/Heyward/Posey, whether or not their best prospects are, in fact, anywhere near being the next Strasburg/Heyward/Posey (NOT).

In a couple years as teams get underwhelmed with the abilities of the next wave of prospects (which at the moment doesn’t look to be very deep or very impactful), they’ll probably swerve back to undervalueing their prospects and proceed to start trading away the next Strasburg/Heyward/Poseys in their system.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

They realy do need to do some old fashion swapping of players futures with the Jays. That team needs to controlible postion players and Brew Crew needs a few team controlled decent arms. That kind of a trade can be done this off season though. Right now I feel that the Brewers and tha Nat’s are hopeing to land a idiot GM trade with their older players. I don’t think that’s really the question, though. The question is “is Josh Willingham that much better that in 1/3 of the season he can make a substantial difference, one that’s worth paying the price the other team is asking for”…..

I would answer YOUR question with: “I’d rather see Josh Willingham.” I’d answer MY question with “I’d rather see Nate/Rowand” (depending on the price, of course, I think it would be too high).

Man, I can’t think of a question that would lead me to answer “I’d rather see Nate/Rowand.” “I’d rather see Bowker” quite probably. “I’d rather pluck mine own eyes out” possibly. but “I’d rather see nate/rowand” definitely not.

The rosters expand 9/1 and you know Bowker will be here at that time. Assuming someone isn’t brought in here before the deadline, you would have to think that the best thing for Bowker’s career would be for Bochy and Sabean to watch Rowand and Nate flounder around for another month.
