Thursday 7/29 Trade Rumors, Thoughts & Opinions - Share Them Here
Let's see if this works:
Rather than a new Fanpost every time someone hears/reads a rumor, has an idea or opinion, let's post them on this one thread. If there's a report of the Ginats actually doing something, that's worthy of a new Fanpost, but it's getting a little out of control when multiple people are joining the site just to make a Fanpost of stuff that's already been shared or discussed.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

I'll start
In regards to trading for a bat, I’m still in the “stand pat” line unless a deal comes along that so good you’d wouldn’t have imagined it was possible.
I could go along with a trade for a LH reliever if that’s what the team think they need to stay competitive.

I'm in this line too
I don’t think the Giants can really afford to trade much away for a marquee hitter.
It’s like going into a Gucci store with about $75 in your pocket. You might be able to find something you can afford, if you’re really lucky, but do you really want it just because it’s in your price range?
I would like to see the bullpen shored up a bit, but again, not at any kind of steep cost.
Overall, I think the team is fine, and if they want to swap out a minor part or 2, OK, but it shouldn’t be deemed crucial.
I came, I saw, I told bad jokes and left.

I disagree. I want us to make a huge move that makes me excited to turn on the game this weekend. Why is it always other teams fans who are all excited, and I get a Ryan Garko? Do something big, crappy unimaginative GM of mine.

The Dodgers are in town, the Giants have been the best team in baseball the last 3+ weeks… you’re not already excited to turn on the game this weekend?

So does "Standing Pat" mean you are an upstanding athletic Burrell Supporter?
I belong in this line, dick jokes aside, if this team is giving up much of anything for a hitter not under 28-29 It would be a mistake. Or that hitter would have to be player that would very surprised to hear was on the market in the first place.
Threat level that the 2010 Pads finish with more wins than the 2010 Giants is currently at: 61%

Is this a Mod approved OMGTRADEDEADLINE post ?
JK…I with you in the stand pat line, unless an unbelievable deal comes along. At the risk of enraging GiantPain, I am frightened by the thought of Adam Dunn, even with .a 915 OPS. Jose Bautista is slightly less scary as long as the price is right, and Sabean doesn’t sign him to a 5/60 deal next year. Cantu would just be stupid.
A LH reliever would fit in nicely, and provide a little extra security in the Pen.

Jose Bautista, I don’t think there is any way he’ll keep up his production. He’s have a flukey good year but I don’t see him being that consistently good.

latest: Cantu out, Dunn in
At least Dunn can hit, unlike Cantu. I would not like seeing his clankmitt, even at first. If the Nats are asking for half the farm system and Bumgarner, I would pass.
Another precinct reports in.
As to general principles, that "’stand pat’ . . . unless a deal comes along that so good you’d wouldn’t have imagined it was possible" sounds like excellent advice. Most of the pieces needed for success are already in place (though not being used optimally), and adding just to add is worse than useless.
If something is wanted in the way of a bat, it would be a right (or center) fielder who is relatively young and fleet of foot. And, obviously, a bullpen arm of the sinister persuasion wouldn’t come amiss. That’s about it.

Latest from MLBTradeRumors.com
(Can’t link from my primitive Dare) Cantu to Rangers is confirmed. Yankees out on Dunn, Giants working hard to get him. I like Sean Marshall more and more. Good numbers against lefties, attainable, and team control through 2012.

I’m a little surprised the Giants weren’t involved when Lance Berkman and Austin Kearns were had for about nothing.

The reason I ask is I posted one about how I hate the trade deadline and it has disappered.
I have no problem if that is indeed what happened. I’m just curious as to if that occurs.

At this point my main concern
is that the Pads and/or Dodgers don’t improve themselves. Tejeda may help the Pads a bit. If he finds some of his old stroke he will help them a lot. I find that unlikely, however.
Pods helps the Dodgers a little – but to me it signals that they believe Manny won’t play that much more. Otherwise, why give up anything for a 4th OF.
Dodgers are talking Lilly. He could help a rotation that is seriously hurting on the back end. I hope that doesn’t happen.
re: the Bums. The more they “improve” now the worse they will be down the road. Not all the young help they have in MLB will stay healthy. Not all the young help will it all pan out they way they hope. With their current ownership structure this will need to run a lot more like the 90’s -’00 Twins that what they have been doing under Colletti. If the Giants lay the hurt on them this week end it would go a long way to making this season very tough for the Bums as well.

Goofy idea
I threw this out somewhere else, but this seems like the appropriate forum. How about the Giants trade Rowand to the Cubs for Zambrano and then trade Sanchez for Fielder?
(This will obviously never happen.)
Fielder & Hart
Are apparently off the market now. But I wouldn’t mind a Zambrano/Scott deal as long as the Cubs pay for the difference in contracts, it gives us the freedom to trade a pitcher but I don’t see Sabes pulling the trigger.

Anyone notice that Brandon Belt played left field tonight in Double-A? I’m not sure whether it’d be a showcase for a trade or a chance to see if he can handle that position in the majors soon or what, but it seems interesting. Or maybe it doesn’t mean anything at all.
OK, carry on.
I’d say it probably doesn’t mean anything, but considering Belt has stolen 19 bases this year it seems likely that he’s athletic enough to handle corner outfield. I’d say it’s a good move, considering how the organization seems to be putting a (rather bizarre) premium on “versatility.”
perhaps its for this reason
Pablo continues to slump. (.270 SLG PCT last 65 games!) Belt in LF, Huff RF, Ishi IB and Uribe 3b.
Not very damn likely but who knows.

cuz wow there really are too many trade related fanshots! Whatever happened to the time honored McCoven tradition of hijacking all the redundant, stupid, boring fanposts? If it isn’t suddenly forboden I say it’s time to revive the tradition.
I mean seriously… does everybody’s wild trade deadline rantings need their own separate fanpost?
Already discussed?
From SFgiants.com:
As Saturday’s 1 p.m. PT non-waiver Trade Deadline crept closer, indications grew that the Giants were almost exclusively concentrating on acquiring bullpen help and had abandoned their pursuit of a hitter.
why don’t you want Dunn?
Back on the market.
by positiveuphemism on Jul 29, 2010 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions
I don’t want his defense, I don’t want a rent a player, I’m tired of the FO acquiring fading vets instead of giving younger guys a shot, I don’t trust the front office to evaluate talent, nor do I trust botchy to correctly use the talent, I’m not confident his numbers will carry over to the Phone Booth, I wonder why his walks rate is down [less IBB?] and his strikeout numbers are up, I wonder how much of that 12mill the Giants will have to pay…
Now if they want to trade Rownads for Dunn straight up…okay. Otherwise -pass
