Brian Sabean, God's trying to tell you something
Last Thursday, you were just about to make a deal for David DeJesus of the Royals. That night, he crashed into a wall trying to catch a Derek Jeter liner. He's now out for the season.
You turned your attention to Corey Hart. Friday, he too hit a wall, and hasn't played since.
You brought up Eugenio Velez. So what happened? We all know what happened.Everyone says we need a bat. Preferably a left-handed power hitter, a guy who can play right, left or first. You've been trying to get one. They keep dropping like flies.
Someone's trying to tell you something.
And here's what that Someone is trying to tell you.
Stop it. You don't need to make a trade. Our minor league system is pretty bare; you don't need to further deplete it. As it happens, you have, currently under contract and on the 40 man, the answer to your problems. He's a left handed hitter with pop, can play right (not well), left and first. And he's completely tearing up AAA, not for the first time.
His name is John Bowker.
When Panda's finished with his business back home, you can send Rohlinger back down. We won't, at that point, need an infielder. Then bring up Bowker.
This is not, remember, from me, or from the McCoven generally.
This is a message from a much higher power than any of us.
Bring up John Bowker and tell Bruce Bochy that he needs to play, 4 starts a week minimum.
You won't be sorry.

My cat yowls every morning to be let in.
I let him in, he takes a shit, drinks some water, maybe eats something, i don’t know, I’ve stopped watching, then he’s yowling again, wants back outside.
We have mice. Lots of mice. Colonies.
What the hell good is he? And what does he do all day?
You guys want a cat?

I like John and all but he simply has not done the job in the majors.
Get well soon Velez. (just not too soon)
What is Bochy ball? It is how the game of Baseball should be played. The right way. Aggressive. No wasting outs. Dirty Grit. Experience trumps talent when talent does not work hard. Stats are irrelevant. Past performance means nothing. Veteran presence. What the hell have you done for me lately. Playing the hot hand. It is what is. All of this encompasses the true essence of Bochy ball.
Respect Bruce Bochy.

If Bowker actually got to play instead of pinch hitting..
…we might actually finally settle this question once and for all.
That defense is all the more reason to leave him in AAA.
If he sucked in the majors before because he was sitting on the bench and pinch-hitting, maybe he’s not the best candidate to call up to sit on the bench and pinch-hit?
My son is Madison Bumgarner, the Invisible Shark of pitching prospects. My other son is a Porsche.
Plus he could play everyday. We don’t need Burrell in the lineup, Travis is ok but I don’t see him being a piece longterm and Huff can go back to 1st, Andres in CF and Schierholtz in RF. There’s room for everyone. And I’d rather see Rohlinger in the lineup rather than Mole and Renteria at this point. I like Freddy’s Defense but he’s just been struggling so much at the plate he needs some time off.

t's Posey time!!
Tim Flannery: Make better decisions dammit.
Yes, I believe tossing out LFers with OPSs around .800 has long been a popular move ’round these parts.
Me? I’d rather maybe not dismantle a lineup that’s been winning a fair number of ball games based on the precept that a guy who’s been pretty bad in the majors is secretly really good.
My son is Madison Bumgarner, the Invisible Shark of pitching prospects. My other son is a Porsche.
I’m still rooting for the guy, but I’ve pulled the plug on my Bowkermania. He was meh pre-2009, he’s been sub-meh in the majors, and his current Fresno line is fine but not MLB-starter-worthy. 450 brilliant plate appearances in the PCL last year just isn’t enough to hang one’s hat on.
Just saying, last night
First and second, no out, pitchers’ spot up, who would you rather see PH? Rohlinger or Bowker. Okay, Roh was up to bunt. Really? Down two runs, you want to give up one of the three outs you have left?
Me, I want Bowker up. Then I can tear my hair out when he taps weakly into a 4-6-3. But maybe he rips one into the gap. In fact, in my alternate universe where good things happen, that happens.

The Thing About Bowker
One way or the other the Giants should know by now whether or not Bowker is the answer to anything, but because of their Bork-headedness, the answer is unknown. I’d love to see him in the SF lineup for an extended period of time. Schierholtz has shown what he can and can’t do. Bowker should get the same (or better, really) chance. Seems unlikely that Bowker gets an opportunity when the Giants are winning, though.
Half-agree.
I don’t think the results are all in yet on Schierholtz. (Did anyone notice that in Sunday’s game, after his hit, he was standing on first and rubbing his right shoulder, apparently in some discomfort there?) I for one would like to see some more Schierholtz steady play time, but Ishikawa’s 15 minutes of fame are blocking him (along with, probably, some bias on Bochy’s part).
Professional baseball analyst since 1980.
Bochy's bias
became incontrovertible after TI’s go-ahead hit last night. He’ll never not start against a righty again.
Billy Hayes: His job is better than yours.
Adopting Denny Bautista until someone tells me he's already spoken for.
Life isn't always fair
I know everyone feels like Bowker hasn’t had a chance, but I think that’s just the way it goes in the big leagues sometimes; you have to make the most of your opportunities, wherever they come.
I doubt Bowker gets put in any sort of starting role again, but he’ll get his chance, much like the ABs eventually came for Ishi.
Proudly adopted Aubrey Huff. You can't beat that!
Bowker is, potentially, too good of a hitter to just allow to rot in AAA. Yes, it’s all potential so far. But it’s more potential than Manny Burriss, or Ryan Rohlinger, or Ben Copeland, or Tyler Graham (just random examples). Brandon Belt might currently exceed John in potential, but no one else in the organization does, imho. It’s absolutely criminal, in a hitter-starved organization like SF’s, that we haven’t already given Bowker a full shot at establishing himself.
It’s not just the current situation, nor the results. It’s the fundamentally flawed process that I detest. We’re desperate for good hitters, and particularly sluggers. We should have a much better process to discover and nourish those kinds of players.

Like may not be fair
But I prefer life not to be stupid… and keeping bowker in triple A is quite stupid

While I am not convinced Bowker is the answer, I’m all for giving him a good shot.
But mainly, I rec’d this fanpost because it’s brilliantly written. Sabean, you can dismiss the Lunatick Fringe, but you’d better not be dissing God.

That’s what I thought this post was going to be about.
I also think they still need a backup infielder much more than a backup outfielder.
