2010 Negative Trade Value - Aaron Rowand
Nothing new, but it always hurts to read.
"#10 – Aaron Rowand, CF, San Francisco
Remaining commitments (2011 and beyond): 2 years, $24 million
A colossal bust since joining the Giants in 2008, Rowand’s numbers have gotten even worse this year. He has been relegated to a part-time role, and yet the Giants still owe him $12 million per year for his age 33 and 34 seasons. The Giants would have to eat at least $15 million to move him and probably a bit more than that, though he may yet have something left to offer – the only real difference between his performance this year and the last two is his BABIP. He wouldn’t be the worst change of scenery candidate ever."

He wouldn’t be the worst change of scenery candidate ever
….but I can’t think of anyone worse so I’ll just write this. LOL

He's tradable
If BS can just be patient and work the phones.
I still think the Rowand for Zambrano swap is doable if BS just works on it – or better yet delegates all the phone time to an underling. It would be a win-win for SF and the Cubs.

The more I watch Rowand play
The more I am ok with this idea. Really, Rowand has no place in our OF

IT Guy: That’s how often they get on base. I do not know why you keep asking me, I am here to fix your server.
Just remember one thing.
Rowand is our second centerfielder. Losing him probably means a permanent roster spot and semi-regular playing time for Velez.
Rowands contract has no spot on this team, but there are worse 5th outfielders.

Nate should be getting some playing time in CF. If a Rowand for Zambrano deal were to happen and a pitching for solid hitting corner outfielder Nate could easily fill the role of 4th OF. While I think the team probably would go with Velez in the 5th OF spot, Bowker would obviously be a better alternative.

On the bright side...
…there are nine guys with even less trade value than him!

On the dark side...
… one of them is probably Barry Zito.

It’s so weird. The Yankees got a huge break when he opted out of his contract, and then decided to screw themselves anyway.
I was promised lasagna.
Even stranger considering there was probably no other team that would have come close to matching his original contract.

#4 – Barry Zito, P, San Francisco
Remaining Commitment: 3 years, $65 million
While Zito is certainly pitching better than he did in his first few years in San Francisco, most of his supposed improvement is a mirage. His ERA is 1.27 runs lower than his xFIP, and while he’s a guy who will post lower than average BABIPs, even he can’t sustain these kinds of results with how he’s pitching. He’s been able to get back to being a middle of the rotation innings eater, but he’s paid like an ace. The Giants would probably have to pick up between $30 and $35 million of his remaining deal in order to give him away.
But Zito has pretty much done this in every year he’s been successful. He always puts up better results than what peripherals and sabremetrics say you should expect, so it seems like he does something well that isn’t fully measured by them.
The Giants defense has been significantly better than last two seasons than is was in 2007-2008.
Coincidence?

Well spotted.

actually he's done it EVERY year, even in his bad ones
his ERA is consistently ~1 run below his xFIP.

Being left-handed should give you a slight BABIP advantage. Playing in the bay area stadiums should help you give up less Hr/DB.

I am so happy that Carlos Lee turned BS down. Man, that was/is 1 horrible contract.

The best free agent that year was probably Lilly.
And he was probably followed by Bonds. I’m probably missing someone, but boy am I glad the Giants didn’t get Lee, Soriano, Matthews, or Pierre. Although I guess signing the first two would have at least precluded signing Zito. This is the problem with teams that operate with a goal budget like the Giants – the GMs feel compelled to spend the money instead of saving it to over-pay a really good play (i.e. Carl Crawford).
