Buying low

I don't often post here, mostly I just view posts and sometimes comment. I have seen the many posts about possible trade targets, who the Giants should get, who just needs to be in a giants uni, who would be a great fit, numerous ideas. One option I haven't seen that I think would be great would be for Chone Figgins.  I think the Giants could get him for Edgar Rentaria and a low level prospect. The Mariners are having a very bad year and have to rebuild yet again after a disappointing season.  Seattle would want to trade him because obviously they are having a bad year and not contending, he too is having an off year, and he is taking up 9 mil for the next 3 years with an option for a fifth. Now there isn't any reason to be paying Chone and keeping him if they are not competing. I think the Giants could come in for a steal. Chone Figgins would be a breath of fresh air. Though he is only hitting .228 with 0 hrs and only 22 RBIs, he does have 22 stolen bases, and a .324 OBP. 324 isn't great for a hitter, but is impressive for a guy hitting only .228. He is a very patient player, draws a bunch of walks and doesn't strike out often. He is 8th overall in  stolen bases. He is a good defender and can play every position except first, catcher, and pitcher. Chone has been consistent throughout his career and chances are he will go back to being one of the top hitters in baseball.

Why he would be good for the Giants: The Giants have very few guys on the team who are good base stealers. Chone has averaged 48 stolen bases the last 6 years . The Giants don't have a lot of patient hitters. Chone Figgins is one of the most most patient hitters in baseball. The Giants need a guy like Chone to score some runs. Chone will get on base, and get in scoring position giving the Giants a much better chance to score. Chone Figgins is a huge upgrade over Renteria defensively, offensively, speed wise you name it. He is unlike any hitter the Giants have had in a while and could win. One of the reasons I like him as a possible acquisition is that he doesn't cost us Sanchez or Bumgarner.

Counterpoint: dude makes a lot of money. Do we want to take the risk of taking some of that on if we don’t know if he’ll bounce back or not? You can’t really buy low on a guy with that much money left on his contract.

I'd be okay with it if....

It was straight up for Rowand.

Everyone wanted Figgins this off season, but to me it looks like a bullet dodged. The Giants didn’t want him this offseason when his value was high, so why would they want him now?

Buster Posey: Let's enjoy him before he goes to the Yankees.

I’d consider Jack Wilson … though the walk rate might be somewhat problematic.

Why we don't wade through the Blanks' roster simultaneously picking up help and laughing at the wreckage is beyond me.

B.J. Upton and Alex Gordon

Are the only buy-low candidates I would want right now. Maybe Zambrano, if the deal is for Rowand.

Aaron King is still my homeboy... iffy mechanics and all

I seriously doubt you get Figgins for Renteria and a prospect, unless it’s a top level prospect. And in that case I ask: why?

Quietly hoping Brandon Belt develops into John Olerud, circa 1993.

You’d have to think the Mariners would give away Figgins for free at this point. They wanted him more than everyone else six months ago, and he’s been horrible since then.

Of course, “Renteria and a prospect” is somewhat worse than “free.”

No thanks

he is on the wrong side of 30 and appears to be declining very quickly.
