I was kind of happy with the way this graph turned out and I wanted to share. Sandoval's 2009 v. 2010 seasons by 6 stats: BB%, K%, O-Swing%, O-Contact%, ISO, BABIP. The league averages for each season are represented by the black outlines.

Your Failed To Inclued The Stats That Really Tell The Story Of What Has Gone Wrong With The Panda.

This chart makes it look like it is just bad luck with frankly is pure hogwash.

The prercentage of strikes being thrown to Pablo has dropped almost 3% to 37.9% Nobody can be successful that does not walk at least 10% of the time when getting so few strikes to hit.

As a result Pablo is making much less hard contract as evidenced by his LD% dropping almost 3% to 15.9%, his HR/FB% dropping 8.5% to just 5.5%, and his IFFB% increasing 3% to 10.9%

This is not bad luck. It is predictable when one does not change one’s habits with regards to swinging at balls even though one is getting more balls. This will not chance until Pablo makes the necessary adjustment to force the pitchers to throw more strikes. The Panda’s low BABIP and ISO are guaranteed to stay low until he makes this adjustment.

This Is Why The Panda Needs To Be Sent Down To Fresno

He needs a wake up call as clearly all other efforts to get this to sink into his head have failed.

Hogwash!

Actually, his Zone% — pitches seen inside the zone — is down by 2.6% this year. But, the league average for FG’s plate discipline stats seem to shift ever so slightly around each season.

2009 League Zone% (49.3%) 2009 Pablo Zone% (40.5%). Difference (8.8%)
2010 League Zone% (47.1%) 2010 Pablo Zone% (37.9%). Difference (9.2%)

It looks largely the same right now.

Interesting But Does Not Really Negate My Point

I used stats because that is the language you understand the most. But when you couple these stats with observation (and i have watched just about every Pablo PA this year) the balls he is swinging at are less hittable then the balls he swung at last year and even the strikes he is swinging at are closer to the black then last year. You really have to be just wishing to believe that his bad results are just bad luck. They are not, they are evidence that he has not adjusted to getting fewer pitches that he can hit both in and out of the strikezone. He has not changed at all the percentage of these pitches that he swings at even though less of them are pitches that he can hit hard.

I’m not sure how to respond but you typed

The prercentage of strikes being thrown to Pablo has dropped almost 3% to 37.9% Nobody can be successful that does not walk at least 10% of the time when getting so few strikes to hit.

Which made it sound like the 3% change in his Zone% was the cause of his problems on offense. But, the league averages change (slightly) for most of FG’s plate discipline stuff from year-to-year making that 3% change negligible because the league average shifted, too.

Not all luck but...

Ignoring that there may be a luck component to Pablo’s struggle is almost as ignorant as stating that it is all luck.

Luck plays into perception and perception plays into strategy. So, one could just as easily conclude that Pablo is swinging at worse pitches because he didn’t get the same results early on in this season that he saw last year. In other words, his lack of luck could have caused him to try to force good at bats instead of letting good pitches come to him.

I have complete faith that Panda will return to form but I agree that he needs to exhibit better plate discipline in order to get better pitches to hit.

It doesn’t necessarily mean he got unlucky this year. It could also mean he got lucky last year. Or, much more likely, that he got at least a bit lucky last year, and at least a bit unlucky this year, and we’ll have to wait and see by just how much. In fact, I’m pretty sure that most reasonable, non-hyperbolic baseball fans would be able to tell you that that’s the most likely case.

So you ignore the stats that disagree with your eyes

They are “interesting”. And then you cherry pick the few “stats” that you think support your theory, because stats that support your observation should be the ones that are used, the rest discarded as high flyers.

Your comments are, well, “interesting.”

This chart makes it look like it is just bad luck

Does it? The thing that leaps off this chart most noticeably is the dramatic decline in power. And I don’t know that how naturally that element leads to a conclusion that the change “is just bad luck.”

As an aside, I might note that you could easily have phrased your point as supplemental information, rather than going out of your way to attack and deride the OP.

I mendioned this at Chris's blog

If Panda’s dealing with problems on the homefront, as Baggs and Schulman have hinted at, that could be a power-sapper. My heart would be less in my work if my wife and I were having problems.

I agree

last year he seemed really happy-like he was enjoying life and doing well at baseball was just kind of second nature for him.

If he is going through a divorce, I could definitely see him getting into his own head too much.

He seems happy on the field

Other possibilities are that he is hiding an injury. The loss
of weight has impacted his energy level. Could be that there
is a minor change in his swing. NEVERTHELESS, I do not
like the idea that Bochy wants him to go back to hacking.
Even if he went through a minor slump during a transition
period from hacking, to intelligent hitting, eventually he will
be the better off for increasing his plate discipline and pitch
selectivity. Look what it did for Bonds.
