Giants monitor Bumgarner's workload
"The Giants might be forced to make a tough decision on Madison Bumgarner if they contend down to the wire - namely, how many games will they let him start?"
I'm glad they're considering his workload.

If They Are I Am Not Glad - But I Doubt Very Much That They Realy Are Inspite Of This Quote.
My money is on him staying in the rotation as long as the Giants stay in the playoff hunt and I am betting that is all season long.
I didn’t really see anything in the article that suggested they were considering his workload. “RIght now we’re just thinking about sending him out there every 5th day” is screaming proactive management to me.
And certainly nothing that happened today suggested they’ll consider the health of his 20 year old arm. Sending him out for that 7th inning was in my view just plain stupid. He had labored through the 6th throwing a lot of pitches and ended that inning at nearly 100 pitches (99 I think). It was very hot. He had a 5 run lead and was the second batter up in the top of the 7th. Why exactly wasn’t PH for him and letting the bullpen take over the late innings the obvious move? That just struck me as reckless, and among other things set up that ridiculous parade of pitchers in the 7th and 8th innings.
As a side note, for a guy whose supposed to be a good bullpen manager, Bochy seemed to be channeling Felipe today. He had Casilla warming up in the 6th inning in case Bumgarner couldn’t get the third out, but then he ended up bringing in Ray in the 7th (one out later). WTF?

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
I suppose but starting that inning clean might have made everything easier, and warming up pitchers you never use is generally not the greatest idea. But more to the point, sitting down Buster after 6 should have been a no-brainer (especially one day after the Nats had broached the topic by announcing their hard target for Strasburg).

This is the part I was commenting about:
Even at six innings per start, his total would balloon by 50 innings over last year, and that, Bochy said, is the kind of single-year leap that can endanger a young pitcher’s arm.
yeah, but that’s followed pretty quickly by:
Thus, the Giants might have to stick a regulator on Bumgarner in the second half, even though they believe his arm is strong. He threw 115 pitches over eight innings in his first big-league win, at Milwaukee on Tuesday, and Bochy said, "There’s no doubt in my mind he could have gone out and thrown 130,
which I’d say gives more of an indication to what they’re behavior will be when it comes down to it. “Hey, what ar eyou complaining about? It’s not like we made him throw 130 pitches every game after all (even though if we had I’m sure it would have been fine)”.

Well, actually they are much ado about something. Namely pitch counts and the ∆ innings.

I know that the Padres shut down Matt Latos last year after only a handfull of starts in SD (he was called up in July) for the sake of caution. Of course, the Pads were nowhere near the pennant race by that time. I’m of the opinion that Bochy and BS feel enough heat (in terms of keeping their jobs) that they will burn almost any brdige in order to keep the Giants in contention for as long as possible.

the #5 starter will always miss a couple of starts due to offf days
and September call-up starters. Of course, the #5 dude usually sucks, and they look for excuses not to pitch him.
