Post-game thread: Giant bats wake up again

The late-inning rally, started by Aaron Rowand, was...

Pretty much. I wasn't expecting to write this after the first inning: good win, GIants.

Also of note: Buster Posey has the best opposite-field swing for a right-handed hitter that I’ve seen since Mike Piazza. Even better, Posey doesn’t have a noodle arm, an elk’s head for a mitt, and a terrible moustache. Everything’s looking up right now.

His O-Swing rate has been consistently higher than average – though not terrible – ever since he made the majors. He won’t strike out on a ball in the dirt, but he does seem to swing at too many close balls in early counts. Maybe it’ll change when they start pitching around him (which is now).

The vision thing is the only physical thing that makes sense.

Outside of that, I really do think he’s inside his own head. Normally, I don’t buy into psychological speculation, but it’s gotten to the point with Pablo’s body language and his clubhouse behavior (“Don’t be like me.”) that I really think it’s affecting him quite a bit.

by howtheyscored on Jul 11, 2010 2:27 PM PDT up reply actions

But then why isn’t he striking out more? Why isn’t he walking less? The drop in power I can’t explain, but most of this is just BABIP fluctuation. He certainly had some luck last year, and it’s possible he’s had some bad luck this year. Exactly how much is the question.

I was promised lasagna.

You literally can’t get more consistent than that.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jul 11, 2010 2:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, I noticed that.

I think the real question is whether he is one of those freaks who can actually maintain a very unusually (but not unheard-of) high level of BABIP and is just having a bad run, or whether it was just an illusion, long-running but eventually illusory.

Speaking strictly from casual eyeballing, my impression is that he is not driving the ball with the authority he had used in past to poke line drives and hard grounders all over the diamond: his balls in play mostly seem—at least relative to last year—sort of feeble, the result of contact but not good contact. Whether that’s vision or not is hard to say.

I think all we can do is wait and hope.

And to go back on topic, if I was a girl, I’d willingly have Buster Posey’s illegitimate children and not hold it against him. Unless it was rape. Then the courts would have to decide.

It’s pretty much the premier fighting game tournament in the world, save for a tourney or two in Japan.

Dunn K’s at a rate of over 30%. Alvarez is good enough that I think he could have Reynolds ish or Dunn type of numbers one day. His power is legitimate. He’s also already starting to make adjustments. .951 OPS over his last 6 games and he’s walked 3 times.

Hitters like him are tough to project

If he doesn’t walk in the minors, you know he’s in trouble. But if he does, you don’t know that he’s not – big guys with lots of power and poor contact rates can draw a lot of walks in the minors without being patient. We’ll see.

Of course not. But comparing him to Adam freaking Dunn – one of the most patient hitters in the majors – doesn’t make sense to me.

As a 22 y-o, Alvarez had a 13.1% walk rate between A+ and AA. When Dunn was that age, he had an 18.9% (!) walk rate in the majors. They’re just not comparable.

Mark Reynolds is a much better comparison. Never actually that patient, just patient enough, with his power. And, of course, he’s not half the hitter Dunn is.

Rob Deer’s career average was .220 yet he walked 12.7% of the time and also K’d 36.3% of the time.

With a .223 ISO for his career.

If people have legitimate 30 HR power they’re going to be pitched to carefully, and they’ll end up on base, even if they hack at slop. Are they going to be like Bonds and walk 150 times? Hell no. But they’ll probably get at least 50 to 70.

Whoops, I messed up

My point is this.

Jonathan has been getting lucky this year. Like, really lucky.

xFIP 40 points higher than his FIP, which suggests he’s getting lucky on home runs.

BABIP 40 points lower than career averages, which suggests he’s getting lucky on balls in play.

If you look at the parts of his game which aren’t really luck based (that is, xFIP), he’s never been better than 2008, and he’s actually been much worse in 2010 than in either of the previous two seasons.

His K/BB after today actually went UP to 1.96. It’s worse than the 2.09 he put up in 2008 but it’s not a lot worse.

With the benefit of a lower HR/FB%

Comparing apples to apples, xFIP to xFIP, he was 22 points better in 08. That accounts for the AT&T chicanery, since he pitched there in 08 as well.

xFIP is iffy..

You’d expect pitchers in ATT to always post lower FIP’s than xFIP’s since it’s harder to hit home runs there.

mostly it’s because of the HR/FB rate of AT&T. xFIP is based on the theory that a pitcher has no control over his HR/FB rate and gives you what his ERA would look like with a normal HR/FB rate.

Of course for those pitchers who get to play in HR suppressing stadiums, they will consistently post better ERA’s than xFIPs.

Mark DeRosa just got the damn surgery.

by oldjacket on Jul 10, 2010 11:25 PM PDT up reply actions

but if you just look at ERA vs FIP, both Zito and Cain constantly outperform those as well.

This is the reason why our pitchers ERA often consistently out performs their FIP. Because defense does make a difference. It’s not so much “oh he is so lucky, he always has a better ERA than his FIP.” It is because his defense works for him. Barry Zito’s ERA out performs his FIP. Not shockingly, the Giants ranks #2 in UZR/150 in MLB, and his home ball park reduces the # of home runs.

With a pitcher who has such poor control, the decline could be pretty sharp – if Sanchez loses his stuff, it could get ugly. But he’s still only 27, and there’s very little mileage on his arm, so he should at least be fine for the rest of his arbitration years.

by wcw on Jul 10, 2010 8:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, first off, the 16th round is not considered “late” – that would place Fleet squarely in the mid-round. Secondly, It’s not his fault the braintrust stuck him in the AZL. He certainly pitched well enough for Coastal Carolina to deserve at least a spot on the S-K roster. Especially when you consider they’ve got old roster-fillers like 23 year old Taylor Rogers and 24 year old Shane Kaufman starting games there.

by Cookyman on Jul 10, 2010 8:47 PM PDT up reply actions

What does that have to do with my point? No evaluator refers to the 16th round as “late” – you’ve got 50 rounds in the draft.

"There ain’t much to being a ballplayer, if you’re a ballplayer." - Honus Wagner

by Fla-Giant on Jul 10, 2010 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, then it’s not really point that has anything to do with anything, is it? “Late”, for this purpose, is anything after the rounds in which you actually expect to find major leaguers.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jul 10, 2010 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions

google 'baseball late-round draft picks'

The first (1st) hit starts ‘em at the 10th. Then there are bunch of football and fantasy baseball hits. Then there’s a ‘mid-to-late’ hit. The second (2nd) applicable hit starts at the 14th.

I could keep going, but why? ‘Late-round’ clearly starts somewhere north of 16.

by wcw on Jul 10, 2010 8:59 PM PDT up reply actions

If the 16th round in a 50-round draft were designated as late, then by correlation, anything after the mddle of the 3rd round in the NFL draft would have to be labeled as “late.”

by Fla-Giant on Jul 10, 2010 9:41 PM PDT up reply actions

There are only 750 major leaguers at any one time. The draft adds as many as 1,500 professional players per year. The average major-league career is not one-half season. QED: most of the draft is ‘late’.

by wcw on Jul 10, 2010 11:21 PM PDT up reply actions

I feel like anything past the 10th-12th round is kind of late.

Isn’t that pretty much when most teams are just trying to find filler and take fliers?

by baetown415 on Jul 10, 2010 9:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Let’s take a gander at just the current SF roster. We have:
J. Sanchez …. 27th rd.
S. Romo …. 28th rd.
T. Ishikawa …. 21st rd.

So, 12% of the current roster of 1 team is made up of guys that were drafted in the 16th rd. or later (and Dirty and Romo are not just roster filler). Now let’s extrapolate that over 30 major league teams, that would come out to 90 players in one year alone. Now, I’ll take of 50% of that just to be on the safe side – and I still come up with 45 guys. And that’s not even including the guys that were non-drafted free agents or un-known international FAs who signed for pennies.

So, the answer to your question is that the number of players drafted in the mid- to late-rounds is not insignificant. Especially when you consider how few players drafted in the first 3 rounds rarely even make it to the majors, much less make a significant contribution.

The thrust of the question was that nobody picked in the 16th round, or later, needs to be followed because they don’t ever make it to the majors. I think I put the lie to that conceit.

No need to get worked up because I called the 16th round ‘late’.

It wasn’t my question, but if I had asked it, its thrust would have been that late-round draft picks are unlikely to make the majors, and so finding some talent there is interesting and notable.

Week 13 Trade Possibilities
(June 30, 2010)

SELL
Buster Posey – Posey is one of the top prospects in the game but in 2010 his name value far exceeds his production. So far he has shown a tendency to chase pitches out of the zone (31.4 O-Swing%) along with having significant trouble versus fastballs (-3.59 wFB/C). Posey has not hit for much power and has a nice AVG thanks to a .310 BABIP. That is at the upper limit of normal levels but catchers as a group tend to have lower BABIPs than other players. Look for Posey’s AVG to fall without having a lot of power to make up for the drop.

I hope you are enjoying the prophesies of your local Nats fan.

I posted this in yesterday’s postgame thread as a balm to your wounds after being Strasburged

Craig Stammen will wreck himself.

He’s been awful, awful awful and has applied the Wil Nieves "stick pins into my Jesus Flores voodoo doll" to the "stick pins into my John Lannan voodoo" doll. The only reason that he’s up here is that John Lannan fell off of a cliff. He believes only in the contact side of pitch to contact, has minimal plus pitches, and will likely get shelled leaving an old fashioned Livo rubber match as the battle for positive mojo for both sides heading into the all-star break.

Buster Posey looks like a total and complete stud his first run through the league. I don’t know how he rates compared to Heyward (who has went down lately) or Carlos Santana or Boesch (sp?) on the Tigers. But today, he was an absolute and total beast. He singlehandedly willed his team to win. For Giants fans who have witnessed so many games where a sucky start was a death sentence, it must have been exhilarating to see this kid come from nowhere and show the capacity to carry his team on his back to some wins that will keep the team in contention long enough to justify additional moves to gain ground in the competitive NL West.

I was on record elsewhere saying that the Molina trade was great for the Giants (largely based on what I learned visting here last time we played the Giants). Posey’s performance as a catcher tonight show why he’s ready to play everyday. Lost in the sauce of the offensive performance was the great plays to help gun down the Nats in the crucial 6th inning.

I hope he keeps this up and shows he can do this against the Braves, Phillies, Mets, Marlins, Cardinals, Padres, Rockies, and Dodgers as well. I’d imagine he’d be allowed to rest against the DBacks because they suck so bad.

We don’t know what Clippard is. Until 10 days ago, he was the best reliever in the Nats pen. He was probably overused before. He trails only Moylan and Feliciano in appearances and they are a ROOGY and a LOOGY respectively who don’t go as long per outing and don’t have godawfully violent deliveries.

When you’re the Nationals, you don’t get bold and bring Drew Storen up on day one to immediately distribute bullpen innings instantly. You’re conservative and you choose to let Brian Bruney demonstrate beyond a shadow of a doubt that he’s not worthy of a major league roster spot anywhere in the league. So when you only have Capps and Clippard as reliable bullpen options, you run Clippard into the ground during the first 3rd of the year before Storen comes up and proves his dependability.

We can’t say Clippard is pretty bad until we see how he responds to rest during the all-star break. Even then, it’s hard to say whether he’s bad because he’s bad or bad because he was put into many high leverage situations early in the year. When you can’t blow people out and you don’t posssess a starter capable of going 8 innings, you’re bullpen tends to fade as the season goes along. Only time will tell whether Joel Peralta and Doug Slaten are enough bullpen reinforcements to serve as viable backup plans if Clippard falls off.

Yes, Giants fans, Matt Capps, badass all-star that he is comes into The Final Countdown. He was trying to get rid of it but then he struggled during early June and went back to it. The Final Countdown is here to stay.

But Strasburg’s “Seven Nation Army” is badass and Clippard’s “Peaches” is badass. [Started as a joke in the minors, probably an off color one since he won’t say what it is. Clippard’s a goofy dude and one of my favorite Nats. Certainly the first one I’d get a jersey of if I had the funds. Off the beaten path, and he’s been solid before the last ten days.]

Giants just had bad luck. With the Royals start, they didn’t hit the ball as hard but all the dinkers fell and he took a loss. With the Mets, he didn’t have the command. With the Braves the defense let him down. With the Giants, you guys hit the ball harder against him for one inning than he’d been hit all year. That just made him mad enough to never listen to Wil Nieves again for help calling pitches and start throwing inside to anybody who ticked him off and channel his inner Nolan Ryan.

It’s all about that slurve. If he’s locating it, he’ll make a lot of people look like Renteriaed looked last night.

[This Nats fan hangs head in shame]

This is horrific. I am embarassed and ashamed of my fan base. I wish there was a forum by which he could have some kind of fan seminar before you were allowed to purchase a quality ticket and informed of what’s appropriate behavior. The wave stuff totally sucks, and I put up a FanShot at Federal Baseball headlined by that photo you’ve got up there the evening of that start (which I was at).

I was in the grandstands last night. After Strasburg left, they were trying to do the wave. The 300 sections underneath the press box can often withstand the uninformed masses. It’s even worse when the goofy PAID BY THE TEAM idiots in the Natpack try to start it. I wasn’t at the game tonight so I don’t know who started it, but trying to do the wave while your psychologically fragile reliever is on the hill trying to hold a narrow lead ain’t a great idea.

Nats fans remember that your 0-2 in games when you do the wave while Clippard is on the mound. (Clippard was on the mound for the wave tonight and the wave at the Obama game).

On a desperate search for Sunshine at Nats Park.

Who even does it anymore on purpose? Isn’t it like an 50’s thing? I don’t think I’ve ever actually been in a stadium that seriously did one.

One of the nice things about DDJ is that he would enable us to have a legitimate leadoff hitter, even on the days Torres is off.

I really have to credit Evan (I think it was him) for showing me how good DDJ is by comparing his stats to Carl Crawford’s. Also, I heard it was a Posey-rific game. So I’m watching it on OnDemand. Right now the Nationals have scored their first run with no outs and runners on second and third. I’m assuming things get better.

If you knock off the NL’s two worst teams, the NL is no worse than the AL. This whole “the better league” is a media creation.

Yeah I don't get why that makes a difference..

You can’t just assume that if you gave the AL 2 more teams to equal the NL, that they’d be the worst and all of a sudden the AL = NL (at first, if they were expansion teams they would be, but overtime they wouldn’t)

It has nothing to do with the media. MGL is not “the media”. Seriously, what’s this bizarre NL pride that people have that prevents them from admitting something that’s been proven over and over again? It’s not like you need some SABR study to prove this (though they exist, too) – this is the 6th year in a row that the AL is winning Interleague by a pretty large margin. What possible reason is there to think that the AL isn’t better?

I think (at least for me) it’s more people saying “[insert mediocre pitcher here] would be better then all your players combined if he was in your league.” It’s partly whiney, like they’re saying it’s so unfair they play in a harder league, and it’s partly saying all of our players are insignificant when compared to “the better league.”

I don’t think interleague is a good indicator… it really just means that the difference between AL and NL pitchers at the plate is smaller than the difference between the DH and the 10th man. I guess you could say that the DH gives the AL an advantage and that’s why they’re better, but I’m unwilling to do that because I consider the DH an abomination.
I prefer to say the AL might be better right now, but that it’s a cyclical thing and it will change in time.

Utter frustration and futility.

by Johnny Disaster on Jul 11, 2010 10:52 AM PDT up reply actions

It’s not the difference between the DH and the 10th man – the vast majority of DH’s can, and do, play the field. It’s not like David Ortiz wouldn’t have had a job if the DH hadn’t been invented.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jul 11, 2010 11:21 AM PDT up reply actions

But the vast majority of 10th men can’t hit particularly well. I think Johnny is saying that the AL has the advantage of having all the same position players, plus an extra cleanup hitter instead of a career backup. That’s a legitimate difference.

Cleanup was clearly an exaggeration, but the quality of hitter you’ll find in a DH is better than that you’ll get in a 10th man.

Which is why the vast majority of DH’s would still be playing even there weren’t such a thing as a DH.

The only guy who’s actually earning a job here is the 9th man on the AL team roster – generally that’s the guy would lose his job if there weren’t a DH. There isn’t a very big difference between him and the 10th man on the NL team.

I was promised lasagna.

by Cookyman on Jul 11, 2010 12:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t know about vast, and if they did play they would generally be replacing the first baseman or left fielder rather than the 9th man.
I still think the difference between the NL tenth man and whoever it is that wouldn’t be playing is greater than the difference between pitchers. And that the pendulum will eventually swing back. And that the DH is an abomination.

Utter frustration and futility.

Also, NL hitters have hit worse over the past few against AL pitching than against NL pitching. The DH can’t explain that.

An interesting point . . .

. . . someone who compiled one of those “best/worst GM” lists made: on his list (and I’d venture that most other lists would be at least roughly similar) 4 of the top 5 GMs were AL while 4 of the 5 worst were NL. That could account, in a strong way, for much (or all) of the current differential.

The average AL team has a slightly higher payroll too, by something like $10M, if I remember correctly.

Probably . . .

. . . the Yankees and Red Sox alone are enough to skew the league total.

Slightly OT, I’ve always felt that the real leverage the Yanks have with their money is not so much that they can afford the best—many teams can afford good players, and others can use baseball skills—so much as it is the huge margin for error it provides. “X is getting 17 mill a year and he ain’t hittin’? Throw him out and get another one. Eat ‘em up—they’ll make more.”

I got an average of $94M for the AL, and $85M for the NL. If we remove the top team in each league, we get $86M for the AL, and $81M for the NL. Not huge, but probably significant.

Brian sabean looks like a genius for trading molina and gettng value in return. Unfortunately sabean really didn’t do anything but have texas come to him and actively pursue molina. I guess sabean did a good job deeking the rangers and making them think molina was extremely valuable to the club. I think chris ray has been a fantastic addition and the other prospect was legit to. Texas is sure stoked they traded for molina, it’s been pretty brutal since he came over. He’s also hit into 5 double plays and driven in 0 runs, I love you buster.

I now wonder about the wisdom of using IR

We were at the game last night and just happened to be standing in a position looking exactly down the fence line when Buster hit that HR in the 9th. I was surprised they reviewed it because from our angle it so clearly landed about 2 feet past the fence line, halfway onto that little platform they have between the fence and stands.

I was even more surprised seeing the highlights this morning on MLBtv that it actually was a little questionable from the camera’s angle. If it’s hard to determine correctly whether a ball like that which was out with relatively plenty to spare is really gone, I wouldn’t think they have any chance at all on balls that are really close (a couple of inches say).

My Bucardo is better than yours.

Piazza
Also of note: Buster Posey has the best opposite-field swing for a right-handed hitter that I’ve seen since Mike Piazza. Even better, Posey doesn’t have a noodle arm, an elk’s head for a mitt, and a terrible moustache.

Interesting analogy. One of the things I liked about Piazza was his steadfast refusal to stop being a catcher after he was forced to do it to have a shot at the majors. It was kind of like, “Oh, now that you see I can hit, I don’t have to do this anymore? Screw you, I’m staying.”

Buster’s career has a similarity, except HE’S AN AWESOME CATCHER!

"That sort of thing only happens to white people."
