Fun Time Waster: Finding the Best Hitter/Pitcher That Shares Your Birthday

Mucking around with BB-Ref last week I noticed that they have a Birthday Search Tool (TWSS) that allows you to search for players by birthdate. I thought it would be fun if we all searched for baseball players that share our birthdays.

Link: http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/birthdays.cgi

Here's mine, March 22.

Hitter: Glenallen Hill. I thought this was kinda funny since I always liked Hill. He was a terror on defense, but when he actually connected on a pitch, he could hit the ball tremendously far. He has the most career HR (187) on my birthdate and the highest OPS (.804) of anyone that played more than a couple of seasons. Yay, Stone Hands!

Pitcher: It's a toss-up between Dick Ellsworth (2,155.2 career IP, 100 ERA+) and Ramon Martinez (1,895.2 career IP, 106 ERA+). Ellsworth's 1963 (290.2 IP, 167 ERA+) season with the Cubs made him the best pitcher in the NL. Martinez had some good years, but nothing ever as good as that season in '63.

Plus, Martinez never had one of these cool faux-wood cards.

Dick_ellsworth_autograph_medium

via www.baseball-almanac.com

Advantage: Ellsworth

Hmm...

Not sure how I’d go. With Maris and Rose, Maris had the higher peak (especially his 1960 / 1961 seasons), but Rose obviously played for a lot longer, and actually produced at a high rate for a lot of years. I think Maris was probably the better player, by a little bit, but you have to give Rose some credit for longevity and, if you care about such things, for intangibles and competitiveness.

I would definitely go with Maddux over Johnson, though. Both obviously great pitchers. Maddux had the better peak, I think.

Ceterum censeo fire Brian Sabean.

That is so much more analytic than I was… basically, I wouldn’t want to pitch to either Rose or Maris, but I for damn sure would rather hit against Maddux.

December 16th

Hitter: Um, not so much. The best I’ve got is Billy Ripken (aka Fuckface) who lasted for 12 years, collected 674 hits and was generally mediocre. Sammy Strang, an old-timer, led the league in OBP (.423) with our NY Giants in 1906.
Pitcher: Mike Flanagan, who won the Cy Young with the Orioles in 1979, and won 167 games over his 18-year career.
Names: I think I’m a winner here: Trick McSorely and Scrappy Moore.

And, of course, the immortal Ivan Ochoa – who got 120 AB’s in 2008, and then faded away into obscurity. Dude played good defense…

I am an American aquarium drinker.

Adopted Giant: Daryl "Dealio" Maday - 8-2 with a 1.77 ERA in Richmond. To hell with the cynicism: he's the next Lincecum!

Hitter: Both Honus Wagner and Eddie Murray are there, and I’m going to go with Wagner, I think.

Pitcher. uh… I guess Wilbur Cooper? He pitched for Pittsburgh in the 1910s and early ’20s. Had a 1.87 ERA in 1916! Which apparently was good for fourth. The only other pitcher with greater than 1000 IP is the legendary Bronson Arroyo.

Names: Con Lucid, Nig Lipscomb, Pinky Pittenger, and Steamboat Struss, who, as far as I can tell, only pitched in one game, in 1934, and never played again.

And my favorite, and possibly the greatest name of all time, Stubby Clapp.

This is really cool.

Lots of good actors share my birthday – Feb 8: James Dean, Jack Lemmon, Nick Nolte and the recently deceased Gary Coleman come quickly to mind, but not too many baseball players. The best pitcher – Fritz Peterson – was known more for wife swapping, and the best hitter was a guy from the 19th century with a great name: Bug Holliday – who was born exactly 100 years before I was. Hoot Evers had a decent enough career too.

August 21, 1952

Same day and same year as Joe Strummer, which I didn’t know until he died, a disturbing moment (for I considered him a god on earth) made much more disturbing by the fact that he was exactly my age and one morning simply didn’t wake up. I don’t live the rock star life, but I don’t like it when people my age drop dead.

On to baseball, which I know much better than punk rock. (The good Clash stopped being “punk” when. . . oh, ask your father.)

I’m surprised that Aug. 21 isn’t better populated by mlb given the popularity of Christmas Nooky. (Do the math.) Has that changed? According to the chart, only two current players have that birthday. Only 46 have that birthday in the “modern era”, which I define as being born after 1900, thus playing after The Babe changed things forever. Only 46, and none of them HOFers. Exactly 23 pitchers; exactly 23 position players. This is interesting to me. It should be interesting to you also. Hey!! Wake up!! Now I’m going to tell you about baseball players and nooky, just to keep you reading.

Even if you are the nerdiest of the nerds, you probably won’t know my guys. I didn’t know many of them, and you are much nerdier than I, my imaginary friend. My guys weren’t stars, except in nookyland, perhaps, and we’ll never know that unless The Secret Life of Hilly Flitcraft (a real 8/21 player) comes out next year, first tome in a series of vampire baseball novels, and reveals all that the mainstream press ignores. Yes, vampires play for Seattle. The franchise died for a few years, sure, but then it came back. Not all of them lust for blood, but they all lust.

Late August isn’t a common birth date because mating around Christmas is forbidden. Early September is a common birth date because abstinence has driven the teenage goth fangirl to accept her wolf after the twelve days have passed, not before. September is the HOF month. It’s for the good of the species. Do I have to tell you everything?

Craig Counsell is probably the best of my position boys. He ain’t the Joe Strummer of his position, but he once came on in a late summer and some thought him the most gutteral player for a championship team. He was tall and pale.

Best pitcher of my boys is Murry Dickson (son of Morrie Dickson, son of Oren Dickson), unless you think it’s John Wetteland of the mindless hurlers, they of Dodger scat, who waded through 12 years and 300+ saves while sleeping in whatever land he wished and swapping freely.

June 4th is pretty weak for hitters. It’s a toss-up between Daren Erstad and George Archibald Watkins, who played from 1930-1936 for, among others, your New York Giants! Also cool and random to note, he didn’t play his first year of mlb baseball until he was 30 years old, had an OPS of over .1000 his first year, and led the league in HBPs twice.

Best Pitcher: Bob Klinger, who missed a few prime years during WWII and led the league in losses with 17 in 1939. He also had one more walk than strikeout for his career (358 to 357).
Close runner-up: Art Mahaffey, 2 time all-star, who also lead the league his second year in losses, and another season led the league in ER given up and homeruns allowed. Career innings pitched: 999…so close!

Hitter: Adjusting for position, it’s probably Phil Garner

Pitcher: Some guy named Bob Hendley has the best stats, but 2nd is Jumbo Brown. Factoring in the name, I’m going to go with Jumbo Brown as the best.

Jonathan Sanchez: Often maddening to watch, but capable of perfection on a moment's notice---just like his adoptive father.

I have Wilbert Robinson, who is a Hall of Famer, but I’m not sure why. Career 83 OPS+. He was a catcher, but still. His nickname was Uncle Robbie, so he had that going for him.

Best Pitcher : HOF’er Ted Lyons,1923-1946. In 21 years (I’m guessing 2 years in the war), he hit pretty well for a pitcher: .233/.270/.285 in 1563 AB’s; Also BJ Ryan, Closer 1999-2009.

Best Hitter: Benny Agbayani .274/.362/.445 in 1091 AB’s. Apparently my birthday was not known for it’s offensive prowess.

he was born on June 8, 1911. He’d have been 99 on Tuesday. The name is irresistible, but he had a career. Pitched 300+ innings twice, for pretty bad Dodger teams. Because of the war he made it until ’45.

April 8

The best ones I found were Felix Hernandez and Catfish Hunter.

But in other news:

Hank Aaron hit his 715th HR to surpass the Babe, on April 8, 1974.
Cleveland Indian Frank Robinson debuts as the first African American manager on April 8, 1975.
Will Clark hit his first home run on April 8, 1986, off Nolan Ryan.
Fodgers vice-president Al Campanis is fired on April 8, 1987 after he made racial remarks on national TV two days earlier.
The dodgers got no-hit on April 8, 1994, and Chan Ho Park was the first Korean to appear in the majors.

There’s a bunch more, but, that’s all I’ll mention.
